A couple of weeks ago I described ordering a new computer for a friend. It arrived last week and a certain "user friendly" [1] distro was installed (saving GBP90 in M$ tax :-), basic guidance given, and my friend said "It's much easier" (than W-98!). Yesterday the broadband kit arrived, so I went round to check it was connecting OK.... more »

Somehow one of the filesystems in my FreeBSD box got hosed just enough to cause a panic: reboot after panic: ffs_blkfree: freeing free block This started today, I know not why, after continuous months of uptime. Happiness, whatever it may be, is *NOT* running fsck and seeing an INTERNAL ERROR message due to something hosed in softupdates.... more »

Frustration is the firewall gurus Getting Things Screwed Up to the extent that: 1) I can't ssh or telnet through the firewall to get to my mail filters; 2) The new PIX HTTP proxy is now in play and Not Up To The Job: my iPhone, using 3G or EDGE, is faster by a measured factor of 10. My PFY (literally) asked me today about what I thought was the best way to align a spreadsheet he's making, of servers and their memory/disk/load/ usage characteristics. Which should go across the top and which should go down the side? I asked him which he had more of -- did he have more servers or did he have more categories? He said he had more servers.... more »
