Description: Getting over the trauma of system administration. (Moderated)

LosCon
As always, this time of year, I'll be at LosCon over the weekend. I'll also be working on my annual Nano. I was doing OK on that until today, but car problems and other issues got in the way, so I'll be hard at work around my con running responsibilities.[1] If any of you are in the LArea and pop in, let me know and I'll give you a BOFH sticker for your... more »

On the theory of systems administration
The basic rules of systems administration - agnostic of platform, era, personal preference, management diktat, whatever - are three, eternal, and easy to articulate: Rule #1 (Principle of Least Intervention): "If it ain't broke, don't fsck with it." [An oldie but a goodie, well known by nearly everyone who's ever played... more »

Biting my tongue
Yes, I understand that you have had issues with IT support in the past. And indeed you have been in an awkward situation, where you went from functionally no IT support at all, to having IT trying to help you, but where the infrastructure was shifting underneath them, so when something went wrong[0] you were treated to actual people sitting in front of you... more »

Friends can be lusers too
A couple of weeks ago I described ordering a new computer for a friend. It arrived last week and a certain "user friendly" [1] distro was installed (saving GBP90 in M$ tax :-), basic guidance given, and my friend said "It's much easier" (than W-98!). Yesterday the broadband kit arrived, so I went round to check it was connecting OK.... more »

... and a fine time was had by all. Fsck, fsck, fsck!
Somehow one of the filesystems in my FreeBSD box got hosed just enough to cause a panic: reboot after panic: ffs_blkfree: freeing free block This started today, I know not why, after continuous months of uptime. Happiness, whatever it may be, is *NOT* running fsck and seeing an INTERNAL ERROR message due to something hosed in softupdates.... more »

Frustration Is ...
Frustration is the firewall gurus Getting Things Screwed Up to the extent that: 1) I can't ssh or telnet through the firewall to get to my mail filters; 2) The new PIX HTTP proxy is now in play and Not Up To The Job: my iPhone, using 3G or EDGE, is faster by a measured factor of 10. We have a 1Gbit pipe to the world, and it ain't the pipe,... more »
