Description: Getting over the trauma of system administration. (Moderated)

authentication
Just a quickie, not even tech related, at least not really. We need to cancel one of our providers. They require such notice to be in writing with a signature. Such notice needs to be converted to a PDF and e-mailed to them. Such notice needs to be on company letterhead. Yes, because that totally isn't something I can create in 5 minutes.... more »

here's a gun. let's jump it.
Friday 12:30pm -- Let's make a major update to replace one of our systems. Monday 9:30am -- Well, nobody's complained. I guess the change was a huge success. Let's start turning off the old system. --hymie! [link] hy...@lactose.homelinux.net ------------------------------ ------------------------------ -------------------... more »

IDing old hardware
My father died last year and I'm sorting through his effects. He was an engineer and there's a bunch of old parts I can't identify, including an interesting piece with serial number 0001 that appears to be a prototype board for...something. The P/N is 09-10012 but Google is being unhelpful with that.... more »

Sad news about Iain Banks
Long story short: Cancer. Not expected to live long. <[link]> Fuck. Jim -- "A few ground rules - no bombing, no running, no petting, no diving and no inflatables. In fact, probably best to leave all swimming related activities until later - this is, after all, an operating theatre."... more »

Giant link for mankind
Instead of sticking to my usual kind of stint I've been stupid enough to agree on helping the client to rebuild in addition their website which is run by something they call LAMP. Please somebody tell me why the MP were not so much invented by their respective originators but sort of widely adopted afterwards, the P in... more »

Relative price of S/370 AP and MP systems
Does anybody have an IBM sales manual or other document that shows the price difference between AP and MP for S/370 and 303x systems? I need a citation for the wiki article on asymmetric multiprocessors. Thanks. -- Shmuel (Seymour J.) Knowledge acquisition
A few years ago, someone here posted some anguished rants about Whavcre FEK devices. One of them is being proposed at my place of unrecovery. If the original ranter is still around and willing to share, can you send me private email about the problems you had and whether the J entity ever managed to fix them, so I know what sorts of... more »

Gods these discussions are bad for my blood pressure.
... ... If they don't invite you, you won't know when to lock the door and remotely release the honey badger cage under the conference table. Are these the same people that don't understand the concept of command line arguments? -- Andrew IT is a filter. It accepts masochists on stdin and emits misanthropes on... more »

Random gripe
At least one of Flznagrp Argonpxhc'f command line tools, when asked for program-readable output, produces columnar output where some columns are fixed-width and others are space-separated. Yes, I found a way to work with it anyway. It's still retarded. I lack a BLAMing implement. I need to fix that.... more »

CEO logic
I generated a data usage report for our CEO. He came back with this response: Some customers are not listed on your report. Can we get usage information for the companies that we have no data for? --hymie!
