Dance, power lines, dance!
|

It isn't really cold here, when compared with, say, Korea or Mongolia, and it definitely is warmer than Antarctica. But it's pretty chilly by our standards, and it's going to be genuinely cold Fri. and Sat. Last night we had sustained winds of 70 km/h, with freezing rain, which will make the drive to ork interesting.cn, and has some effect on the power... more »

There's never enough time to do it right...
|
| |
...but always time to blame the sysadmin. Where I ork ($WEUSEDTOBUILDMAINFRAMES), we had two largish federal contracts run out of the building my cube is in. This year both of those contracts have moved on to greener pastures, so those of us sysadmins left here[0] have been moving on to other work.... more »

Insert rant here
|
| |
I won't go into it, for surely it can be referenced by page number in the Big Book of ASR Rants. Suffice to say Vagry, Jveryrff, cer-nhguragvpngvba, Npgvir Qverpgbel. All the pieces work by themselves, but when I put them together, they fall over. If Salvador Dali had designed a network stack, this is what it would look like.... more »

Never thought i'd end up posting here
|

Heh, Guess i was optimistic. I LOVE computers, tinkering, etc. Hardware, software, even found volunteering tech support fun. And then came... the Server Migration... I work for a small-ish company, started as a webdesign, grew to domains, hosting, signs, vehicle wraps, blah blah blah. One of our older servers, was starting to die, so we moved to a newer... more »

How to save/resurrect failing cables
|
| |
I have, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, lots of cables that have problems at the strain relief (if present) or at the connector. In several cases in the past, I've wound up having to discard and replace Expensive Things such as lapdog power supplies and iPhone/iPod cables because the problem was Right At The Connector Body, with no way to... more »

LosCon
|
| |
As always, this time of year, I'll be at LosCon over the weekend. I'll also be working on my annual Nano. I was doing OK on that until today, but car problems and other issues got in the way, so I'll be hard at work around my con running responsibilities.[1] If any of you are in the LArea and pop in, let me know and I'll give you a BOFH sticker for your... more »

On the theory of systems administration
|
| |
The basic rules of systems administration - agnostic of platform, era, personal preference, management diktat, whatever - are three, eternal, and easy to articulate: Rule #1 (Principle of Least Intervention): "If it ain't broke, don't fsck with it." [An oldie but a goodie, well known by nearly everyone who's ever played... more »

Biting my tongue
|

Yes, I understand that you have had issues with IT support in the past. And indeed you have been in an awkward situation, where you went from functionally no IT support at all, to having IT trying to help you, but where the infrastructure was shifting underneath them, so when something went wrong[0] you were treated to actual people sitting in front of you... more »
