++  Congratulations on avoiding the hype, but keep in mind that there is an
++  (albeit small) baby in all that bathwater: the books themselves, IMHO,
++  are darn good books. Well-crafted story in the classic Good Vs. Evil
++  fairy-tale model, three-dimensional characters, plenty of plot twists...

I strongly disagree with that. I've read all four books, but I doubt
I'll bother with the fifth. Three dimensional characters? Come on,
they are predictable as hell. And Harry himself is one of the blandest
characters you can imagine. He's a frigging luser that needs to have
everything spelled out for him, he hardly takes initiative. But when he
does do something himself and fucks up, he doesn't get punished like any
of the other kids would, no, he's Harry Potter, under special protection
of the head master (the oh-so-great-always-right head master, who does
have a knack of hiring people with evil intentions). Harry gets milk
and cookies instead!

And this first book, with the secret chamber. Powerful wizards have
locked it with riddles and locks, but three kiddies waltz through them
in half an hour? Doesn't make any sense to me.
