Is it OK to rant about stuff I just **use** but don't actually
**administer**? I also have a question at the very end.
I had a jailbroken iPod Touch 3G. I loved it. I got it in April 2010,
and I don't remember what iOS version it was running at the time, but I had
carefully upgraded it as far as iOS 5.1.1 . Being jailbroken, it had a
small webserver that ran small Perl CGIs and maintained a cached version
of a website that I run. Being jailbroken, it had easy one-touch access
to the Brightness adjuster. Being jailbroken, it had SSH/SFTP access,
which I used primarily to install and manage ebooks and videos in my
preferred third-party book-reader-and-video-player. Being jailbroken,
it ran NTP, which isn't really a major requirement, as somebody who is
mildly anal-retentive, I liked having it.
It died. These things happen.
So I mail-ordered an iPod Touch 4G. I had heard some questionable things
about the new iPod Touch 5G -- the screen size wasn't compatible with some
of my older apps -- and about iOS 6 -- can't be jailbroken. [1] My new iT4G
came with iOS 5.0.1 preinstalled.
Now for the rant. I'm assuming that everything below here is both
non-UI and well-known.
Apple (I would type it in red-letter small-caps if this were a web page)
hath decreed that the One True iOS Version is 6.0.1 . That is my only
option for easily and officially upgrading [2] the OS.
It is possible to download a copy of the stock iOS 5.1.1 . However, to
install iOS, you also need what is called an "SHSH blob" -- a piece of
magic that ties the iOS to the hardware. There are only two ways to get
an SHSH blob -- one is from Apple, but they will only give you an SHSH blob
for the One True iOS Version. The other is to have previously upgraded to,
what was at the time, the One True iOS Version and have saved your SHSH
blob. Since this is a new device, neither option is available to me.
Further, if I were to upgrade [2] to 6.0.1 , it would be a one-way
affair. I cannot, as far as I can tell, even get the SHSH blob for
the pre-installed version of iOS 5.0.1 .
The biggest problem is, because I do not have an Apple-Approved Copy
of my preferred version os the iOS, I cannot reinstall my final backup
of the now-dead iTouch to my new iTouch. Not a big deal for apps, but
it would appear that my data is gone -- books, videos, notepad notes.
Fortunately, my calendar is primarly managed by Google and the iTouch is
only a copy, otherwise, that would be lost too. Allegedly, if I install
OTiV , I could then reinstall my final backup.
The second biggest problem is that at least one of my favorite apps [3]
has been built with a minimum iOS level > 5.0.1 . So as I reinstall my
apps by hand and hope to find a way to recreate my data, at least one app
is lost until/unless I upgrade [2] to 6.0.1 .
I really miss my PalmPilot m515.
I just dug my Nokia N800 out of my desk drawer and started charging it.
So I guess that leads to my question. For an iPod Touch, which does
not have constant Internet access and thus the issues like Google Maps
and Youtube do not affect me, is iOS 6.0.1 worth upgrading to? It sounds
like the answer is "What choice do I really have?"

[1] At least, can't be jailbroken in an "untethered" manner. If I ever
reboot my iTouch, I need it to be attached to its primary PC.
[2] Some people claim that "upgrade" means "New version number > Old version
number", while I maintain that "upgrade" means "new functionality > old
functionality".
