RSX-11 systems in operation?

Does anyone out there have an RSX-11 system in operation? I have some
9-track reels with RSX backups on them that I'd like to restore. I can
dupe the reels to other media (e.g. 4mm) if that will help. But I want
to recover the files themselves. If someone could transfer the files
from BACKUP to COPY format tape, that would suffice.
Actually, a file list first would be best, since we may not need all
the files.

regards, Chris

So you can read the tapes but not decode them. What platform are you
able to read the tapes on? Perhaps a tool exists that can recover
your files. For example, there is a VMS program, BRUREAD, that can
read tapes created by the RSX Backup and Restore Utility (BRU).
BRUREAD is written in PASCAL, so perhaps it would not be too difficult
to move it to another platform. See
<http://mvb.saic.com/freeware/lt90b1/rsx90b/263001/>. Or perhaps a
newer version exists somewhere.

Hey, IMHO if you are going to read the tapes, you might
as well get *everything* off them and put the info on a
CD-ROM. Then when you need something else, you won't be
looking for another system to read the tapes again.

Reading this stuff on a PC. My software can read a bunch of different
"legacy" formats. But not BRU. Here's a dump of the beginning of the
tape. Is this actually BRU? That 512-byte block between VOL1 and HDR1
is certainly unusual... Thanks for any help.

You might try putting the dump through the unix 'strings' command.

Sometimes it can extract text in a readable format, or at least
a form that doesn't take too much work to read.

Better, though, if you can find a real system to read it on.

Yeah, I have loads of them.
Still running and still in use providing an operational service.

No reel-to-reel though, just DAT.

One is on a Strobe-Data Osprey card that site and runs under NT so
transfer to the Windows environment is not too hard.

Tough bit is that I am in the UK.

Another thing you can do, if you can read the tape, is to save it as a
tape image file, and use SIMH running RSX-11 to read the files. At one
point, I had SIMH running RSX-11M+ that I dumped off of a real 11/44.
It ran just like on the real hardware, only many times faster...

BRU still exists. Irix ships with BRU, so if you have access to one,
you can try there.
