I just booted TOPS-10 on KS10 S/N 4224. This system has 512kW RAM, two TU45 tape drives (one working, one not working), an RP06, and an RM03 that the system can see but cannot format a pack. It booted right up so I ran Adventure for a while.

Yes, you *should* scan and post your Adventure maps!!! If you do *not* want
to host the maps yourself, Rick Adams at <rickadams.org/adventure> would be
glad to host the maps for you.

Five pages of legal-size, two of 14x11 greenbar, and one note-sized
page.
It'll take me a while, but I'll get it done before New Years.

I hope you have "stitching" software to put together the large maps that
will *not* all fit on the scanner bed at once.

Good job, sir! I applaud your committment to historical accuracy!

Were you ever to display this system to the public, you should
station someone outfitted as a Field Service engineer (slacks,
dress shirt, and tie), open tool case nearby, standing next to a
partially-disassembled TU45 and muttering darkly to themselves
under their breath.

No crew-cut, either (although I met several FE's who were true
holdovers from the 1950s and stuck to the crew-cut/tie image
well into the late 70s).

With a small screwdriver on either the SUS or the TUS trimpot and yards of magnetic tape all over the floor.

I don't recall ever working with FS in Marlboro, so I can't speak to
that. Elsewhere, both inside and outside DEC, the Field Service
engineers I interacted with wore ties. I suspect it depended on the
client and the district.

Most also took their wedding rings off.

They took the ties off when they worked. Too dangerous.

wedding rings (actually, all rings) and ties have no business anywhere there is moving parts.

Metal rings and watch straps are also bad near high current
(and usually low voltage) power supplies.

The IBM 2741 terminal, based on the Selectric typewriter
mechanism, has a rod (that the carriage slides on) that
rotates once per character. There are stories of ties
getting caught, wrapped around, and then pulled into the
mechanism. At 14.8 cps your neck goes down pretty fast.

(I heard stories about it, but never saw it happen.
It was usual to put a plastic cover over the printing
mechanism to protect against this.)

In article <50fb7aa6...@nntp3.rawbw.com>,
Ties were removed when working on disk, tape and line printers.

Safety, you know.

Damn tu45 could break your neck.
