Indeed. Back when we bought a Vostro laptop and Vista was the MS
flagship-of-the day, one of the choices Dell gave us was XP Pro
installed and Vista-on-CD. That's how it stayed, right through to
pensioning off the machine.

Current machine is a Lenovo E420 with Win7/64 Pro.

Microsoft may fool some of the people some of the time, but smart
manufacturers know which way the customers think, and take note. Only
the sheep fall obediently into Redmond's line.

What a novel idea!

Reportedly Windows 9 is just around the corner, it will be interesting
see what OS will look like.

I too have a dedicated XP machine and I am running XP in virtual mode
on the Windows 7 machine. That is helping me to make a slow change
away from XP whose days appear to be numbered.

Larry, it's not really that different from XP. My biggest gripe is
some things are in different locations when I want to make a change.
Admittedly I don't do as much tweaking as I used to so I think that's
making my learning curve last longer. If you really want fun go
from XP to win 8 or for that matter 7 to 8. It will likely increase
your vocabulary...if you know what I mean.

I know what you mean about increasing vocabulary. I just bought a
windows 7 machine just to avoid 8 and for the increase speed.

I wonder what it means for the OS when Microsoft stops supporting XP?

Millions of businesses now use XP. I'll bet MS will be somehow be forced to
continue support after April 2014

I understand what you are saying. My thought was that in Windows 9 MS
might reconsider and bring back the old desktop look, at least as an
option, in a later Windows version, however the more I read, the more
I am convinced that MS will stubbornly cling to the metro look.

I did think it was a novel idea that Lenovo had about giving the
consumer a choice about which windows version to use. If only other
vendors would adopt that idea, it might help their sales. Choices for
the consumer is always good and something that MS seems not to grasp
or maybe even care about.

ISTR that Dell initially did something similar when Vista came out. As I
recall, you could get a Vista COA but have Dell install XP instead via
downgrade rights.

That's right, I had that done for a desktop. It was newer and faster
hardware that came with both the Windows XP and Vista disk. I had
them install XP and am still using that machine. It was nice to be
able to upgrade the hardware and also keep Windows XP.

Indeed. See my earlier post. We selected the option of dual media
(XP/Vista) and had the choice of which O/S to have preinstalled.
(Obviously) we chose to have XP installed ....

Anyone want a Dell Vista CD (DVD?) unopened?

Why not let beta testers and other fanboys talked into whitewashing Steve Ballmer's fence test Windows 9, Windows Blue or Windows Fart or whatever they call it. Then we'll see. Until a Microsoft product a actually shipping, it is almost idle speculation to guess how it will work. Microsoft has often changed product content before shipping. My strictly wild-assed guess (SWAG for you old-timers) is that the next Windows will be subscription based. If you don't pay the annual toll to Microsoft, it stops working, or, more likely, begins to operate in a reduced mode... Ben Myers
