A friend of mine has an Inspiron who's keyboard doesn't work. He's tried plugging an external usb keyboard in but that doesn't work either. I would try pressing f8 / run diagnostic but since keyboard isn't working I can't get to them. Anyone have any ideas what we should try?
Thanks, Chris

simply remove the internal keyboard from the laptop. then use an external keyboard. if it works with the external, the njust buy a new keyboard from dell parts.

The OP might also try using a PS2 keyboard if he has one - and if the notebook has a PS2 port.

i think any malfunction would cause both keyboards to not work (ps2 as well as usb) what happens is the built in keyboard causes the keyboard controller on the motherboard to malfunction.

I can buy that idea as well. I just wondered if he might have a case of the USB keyboard not intializing during POST where a PS2 might.
