OT: Memorial Day weekend

We are off camping. No internet, electricity or running water. Hope you
all have a great holiday.(If it is a holiday where ever you live)

Enjoy. If you were camping here, you'd have running water. It's the
traditional Decoration Day weekend -- cold and wet.

No, that would be Armistice Day, the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of
the eleventh month of 1918. My father was a Fleet Marine on the Oklahoma
when Wilson went over to sign so I was well versed in the significance. The
name was changed in 1954, but not in my family.

Decoration Day was a Civil War memorial, although it's not the anniversary
of anything in particular. We always decorated the graves, including a great
grandfather who was a Civil War veteran. The family is full of poor boys who
fought rich men's wars. The name change didn't become official until 1967.

It's also the title of a good album by the Drive-By Truckers.

What I haven't seen in a long time is a Buddy Poppy. I don't know if they do
that anymore.

They used to be "sold" by older vets. Many/most of the old guys are gone
now. We are between the WW2 and Vietnam vets these days..with most of
the WW2 vets gone..or in homes. The Vietnam vets havent pushed them..and
the boys from the Sandbox are still too young.

I afraid its a tradition that is slowly dying out. Last guy I saw with
them was 6 yrs ago..and he was almost 90 then.

I buy them every time I see them for sale, which hasn't been much lately.

Thanks for the correction. It hit my pea brain sometime this
afternoon, but the record should always be set straight. As I
remember the custom in Penna, it became a day to decorate the graves
of the fallen in all wars.

It got hot here in Colorado, and the air is full of smoke from an 80,000
acre fire in New Mexico and a growing fire near Montrose. It did make
for a nice, orange sunset over the Continental Divide and the smoke in
the air smells good. Tomorrow is supposed to be cooler, with a high
temperature in the low 60s. Took the kids to the Boulder Creek Festival
and then took the dogs to Coot Lake out by Boulder Reservoir for a swim.
Happy Memorial Day to everyone except Doo Doo who is back to his insults.

You're welcome. Aside from the 100,000 acre fire in New Mexico, here's a
recent update on Colorado:

High winds whipped the Sunrise Mine Fire in rugged terrain near the Utah
border yesterday, spreading flames across 10,000 acres and forcing the
evacuation of campers.

The blaze in Montrose County, just north of Paradox grew from about
2,800 acres Saturday afternoon. "We had 70 mile-per-hour gusts
yesterday. Today gusts are expected to be 25 to 30 miles-per-hour and
the temperature to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler, said Rita Baysinger,
spokeswoman for the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center.

The fire, which began Friday evening, is burning in a tinder-dry
environment, she said.

Campers were evacuated from camp sites near Buckeye Reservoir on Saturday.

Some structures in the area are threatened by the flames and an
interagency national fire team is now helping to fight the blaze,
Baysinger said. She said could not estimate the number of firefighters
now involved.

The fire's cause has not yet been determined.

A second fire had burned 670 acres before winds kicked up Saturday 13
miles northwest of Pagosa Springs. The fire, called the Little Sand
fire, is burning in extremely steep and rugged terrain where 30 percent
of the trees are dead and dry.

Structures are threatened by that fire, but so far there have been no
evacuations, Baysinger said.

The Little Sand blaze began with a lightening strike.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury fighting the blaze.

We still have vets selling them in the small town near us. There are a
few WW2 men, but more and more Viet Nam vets. My FIL is a WW2 vet and
just went into a nursing home. My dad is also a WW2 vet in good health.
I am married to a Viet Nam vet. The best man who ever walked the face of
the earth. (In my opinion, anyway)

I only have *one* spare, they sold out Sat. We give them a nice
donation and only take one per year so they have more to give out to
others. This year my wife got us both one and I got one not knowing
she already had. She's going to check with them this week and find
out when they'll restock. I'll post that info when I get it.

If you want my spare, post an address and it's in the mail, gratis.
You could always donate something to a local VFW if you have a mind
to.
