1) An item to add to your SHTF supplies:

a sizeable bottle of Everclear (95% alcohol).

Not to drink, but to have for the preparation of tinctures.

2) Plenty of Apple Cider vinegar and Hydrogen Peroxide.

Too many uses to enumerate, but very useful in myriad ways and
not all that easy to make your own.

Hydrogen peroxide is H2O2, a cousin of water. "Hydrogen Peroxide USP"
is a low concentration solution of H2O2 in water. It does NOT boil at
skin temperature, it is spontaneously chemically reactive:

2 H2O2 <==> 2 H2O + O2.

It is these O2 (diatomic oxygen molecules) that you see outgassing
("boiling"). Its antiseptic property is the oxidative nature of O2
combined with the fact that some pathogenic bacteria are harmed by high
levels of O2.

This reaction takes place over time at room temperature, so the solution
will lose potency no matter how you store it. If you store it tightly
sealed, it will last longer. Note that the bottle was brown - as with
beer, brown glass or plastic prevents UV from penetrating and speeding
its reactivity.

H2O2 is a poor survival material because it decays, but for short
periods it has its uses, just remember to rotate the stock. It should
have an expiration date on the label.

I was looking to see how much alcohol to add to purify water, and
learned that you can collect alcohol from a "wash" using your water
distiller from Sears. Complete instructions at:

Light can cause it to deteoriate at a very accelerated pace.

It really needs to be in one of the brown bottles. As far as I know,
it could be plastic, but it needs to be very dark to protect the
contennts from light.

I think it would be a good idea to list some of the uses of
vinegar, peroxide, and so on. Many readers of this list
might get some new ideas.

Sad to hear that your peroxide went flat. I've heard that
it's excellent for cleaning wounds. I remember that pure 3%
peroxide out of the bottle may be too strong for some
wounds. I can't remember much more of the details.

Cool and dark is the storage need. Light tends to decompose
hydrogen peroxide.
