One good place to start is by reading the various surrealist manifestoes
since 1928 or so. Two good collections are _What Is Surrealism?: Selected
Writings_ by Andre Breton (with a rather lengthy preface by Franklin
Rosemont of the Chicago Surrealist Group), published by Pathfinder Press
and _Manifestoes of Surrealism_, published by University of Michigan
Press. A couple of titles that I've seen, haven't read yet, but seem
relevant are _The Philosophy of Surrealism_ by Ferdinand Alquie (UofMI
Press) and _Andre Breton and the Basic Concepts of Surrealism_ by Michel
Carrouges (Uof AL Press). Or you can contact the Chicago Surrealist Group
c/o Black Swan Press. I can't find their address right away, but it was
posted sometime last month in an announcement for an upcoming World
Surrealist Exhibition. I'm sure others on this newsgroup will be able and
willing to fill in any gaps of info.
