From its beginnings as an offshoot of Judaism, Christianity has
been a profoundly text-centered movement. And from the first
centuries of Christianity, there has been a strong connection
between the sacred text and the technology of the book, or as
its early form is known, the codex.
When you pick up a Bible, you are holding something that could
not physically have existed prior to the invention of the codex
and of paper (or parchment). That is, you are holding all of the
Jewish and Christian canonical texts bound into one physical
object. A single scroll could hold, at maximum, one of the
longer New Testament books, such as Matthew. The technology of
the codex allows a relatively vast amount of text to be gathered
together, and the Bible probably contributed centrally to the
acceptance of the codex as a central technology of Western
culture.

The Mining Code (Codex)
The first version of the Codex was probably drawn up in the
middle of the 13th century, but it has not been preserved.
However, it was used in the 1370aying down the principles of
mining in Central Europe. The deed proper, consisting of three
parts, is kept in the Jihlava Archives. Ten years later, version
A was updated by so-called Privilegium B which reflects the
developments and changes in contemporary standards, expanding,
correcting, and complementing the individual articles. Both
versions were written in Latin. At the beginning of the 14th
century, the deeds were translated into German as other
municipalities abroad, outside the Bohemian Kingdom, showed
interest in the Jihlava Mining Code. Thus, the Codex was taken
to Freiberg, Saxony, an important European centre of silver
mining activities, where it became the foundation of the
Freiberg Mining Code. This circumstance is rightfully mentioned
as proof of the undeniably high academic level of the law school
in Jihlava. The deed, titled Privilegium C, is also kept at the
Jihlava Archives.
The German Mining Code of Jihlava was to become the basis for
the famous Mining Code of King Wenceslas I, titled Ius Regale
Montanorum, drawn up in the year 1300 by Gozio ab Orvieto, an
Italian resident scientist with the Royal Court. This Codex was
used as a model for the mining laws in all of Europe. In the
16th century, it even found its way to South America, via Spain.
The fulfilment of the Mining Code was in the competence of the
Jihlava Mining Court. Initially, its jurisdiction pertained
exclusively to Jihlava miners and the locations where they
worked. Eventually, as they went to other regions, so did the
competency of the Jihlava Mining Court. Thus, with its
jurisdiction constantly expanding, the Court in Jihlava was
eventually instituted as the Supreme Mining Court for the entire
Bohemian Kingdom.

These laws certainly demonstrate a change from the Roman
Republic where, to be sure, homosexual rape of male citizens was
condemned but consensual homosexual sex was tolerated, even if
sometimes mocked. Why did this change occur? The answer is
fairly straightforward and lies ultimately in the results of the
actions of the famous Roman emperor Constantine. In 312, this
father of the emperors Constantius II and Constans had reached
out to Christianity as the basis for his authority. Throughout
the next 25 years of his reign, Constantine supported
Christianity and gave financial help to the Church and legal
sanction to some of the bishops' powers. As his sons came of age
in an increasingly Christian society, they and many of their
advisors would have grown up with Biblical strictures. Thus, the
pronouncements of the Book of Leviticus (18. 22, 20. 13) against
male homosexuality as an abomination punishable by death in God'
s eyes would logically have influenced writers of imperial law.
Such strictures were reinforced in the New Testament (Romans 1.
24-27). So, it would appear that the growing influence of the
Bible in an increasingly Christian Roman empire led emperors to
condemn homosexual unions.
When we look at the current attempts in the United States to ban
homosexual marriage, we must clarify what the premises for such
measures are. If the drive to stop homosexual marriage
ultimately derives from the Hebrew Bible, and its acceptance as
religious truth by Christians, would not laws banning homosexual
marriage be thus derived from religion? If so, such new
legislation may well be an attempt to break down the "Wall of
Separation" between Church and State that Thomas Jefferson
described as an integral aspect of American government.

Emperor Brutus sat over his desk. He could hear Mrs. Dillard,
his full-time housekeeper, moving around his house. Carol, his
late wife, hired her, but Mrs. Dillard came only part-time.
He pulled out The Protocols of the Elder of Zion, he turned it
to Protocol number 8. It stated: " 1. We must arm ourselves with
all the weapons which our opponents might employ against us. We
must search out in the very finest shades of expression and the
knotty points of the lexicon of law justification, for those
cases where we shall have to pronounce judgments that might
appear abnormally audacious and unjust, for it is important that
these resolutions should be set forth in expressions that shall
seem to be the most exalted moral principles cast into legal form
Emperor Brutus reached for The Codex Republica, and turned to
the appropriate part of it. Emperor Brutus raised his eyebrows.
This part of the Codex was enormous. The Maastricht Treaty,
signed by the twelve founding member states of the EU, was not
in it; however, the Codex covered Foreign Policy from soup-to-
nuts, focusing on the neoconservative philosophy, and its
presence in American foreign policy. He sighed and shook his
head, then began to wonder what the indexes would be, when Mrs.
Dillard knocked on the door.
Come in, Mrs. D," Emperor Brutus called.
"Mr. Brutus, I'm sorry to bother you, but there's a man, who won'
t say who he is, and he wants a word with you."
"I'm coming, Mrs. D," Emperor said, putting the Codex back into
its envelope, and placing both that envelope and the Protocols
into the little box in which he kept them, and he placed it back
in the bottom drawer, and locked it. He followed Mrs. D. out to
the entrance hall, and the person of King Falstaff.
"I wasn't expecting such a homecoming," Susan siad, burrowing
deeper inside Rambler's warmth. Rambler held her tighter. Susan
be returning to the office where she walked, today, and, after
two weeks of her constant presence, he felt himself to be lost
until she would return.
"Who was that luckless person?" Susan asked,
He saw how large the Codex was, so he began with the index. The
first one was from Foreign Affairs, entitled, "Trotskyism to
Anarchronism: The Neoconservative Revolution," from July/August
1995. It was a review of a book called, The Rise of
Neoconservatism: Intellectuals and Foreign Affairs 1945-1994, by
John Ehrman.
Waiting to greet the Mr. and Mrs., a small knot of people--
Medusa and O'Toole, Sedillo and Ramses and Saul. Emperor Brutus
pulled up in his car but remained seated, taking an emptied
parking space. To this group, Mother Greta and Fishtail headed,
and this group, recognizing the two women moved in closer to
each other. Medusa stood staring at Mother Greta, and O'Toole
stood next to her, holding lightly to her right arm. Mother
Greta and Fishtail noticed Medusa, and stopped in their tracks.
Lonesome Guy had brought night vision goggles but eschewed,
using them, and this would hurt his accuracy, when Rambler and
Susan would step out of the light of the station platform into
the shadows of the parking lot.
Fannie was oblivious to Sedioo, Medusa, O'Toole, Ramses and Saul,
standing around, and she did not hear the crack of the rifle as
Lonesome Guy discharged his weapon.
Before Lonesome Guy's shot, this was the scene that Rambler and
Susan took in as they alighted from the train, walking towards
the awkward welcome committee. The train platform was empty, and
cars were moving to the exits, when the shot rang out, and hit
Fishtail Fannie in the back of the head. Bits of her went
showered Mother Greta who screamed and screamed. Another shot
rang out, and Medusa, O'Toole, Sedillo, Ramses and Saul hit the
ground. Mother Greta screamed and screamed some more. A police
siren could be heard, and a tall, badly limping figure could be
seen coming out of the shadows, running in its awkward gait
toward the tracks, and the empty space that had once been the
Southern Pacific railyard.
From 'Heating up the Cold War'
Ramses scribbled: "Hegemony is tyranny; the founding principles
of American democracy are based on the precepts of the
Enlightenment, both French and English, as codified by Jefferson
in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Anything other than
this, "Messianic-tainted optimism," notwithstanding, is tyranny.
If one leaves out human nature, as Jefferson and the Founding
Fathers did not, one ultimately creates a tyranny: Nazism,
Fascism, in general, and Stalinist communism." He folded up the
codex file, and put it back in his briefcase.
He reached for the protocols to finish reading no. 6, and turned
instead to no. 5, noticing he had not finished it. it said:
"MONOPOLY CAPITOL
Capital, if it is to co-operate untrammeled, must be free to
establish a monopoly of industry and trade: this is already
being put in execution by an unseen hand in all quarters of the
world. This freedom will give political force to those engaged
in industry, and that will help to oppress the people. Nowadays,
it is more important to disarm the peoples than to lead them
into war: more important to use for our advantage the passions
which have burst into flames than to quench their fire: more
important to eradicate them. THE PRINCIPLE OBJECT OF OUR
DIRECTORATE CONSISTS IN THIS: TO DEBILITATE THE PUBLIC MIND BY
CRITICISM; TO LEAD IT AWAY FROM SERIOUS REFLECTIONS CALCULATED
TO AROUSE RESISTANCE; TO DISTRACT THE FORCES OF THE MIND TOWARDS
A SHAM FIGHT OF EMPTY ELOQUENCE.
It was a singular work. It also hinted at an archive, containing,
among others, earlier and later, the works, of Hume, Locke, and
le Comte de Tracy, but Ramses had not happened upon it "Written
in an English that even I can recognize," he muttered to himself,
turning the pages of the codex until coming to the exact
sentence: "By contrast, the philsopher must conserve a critical
spirit to address the few in a coded language as matter to be
interpreted and intelligible only to a meritocracy founded on
virtue...Strauss was widely known for his arguments that the
works of ancient philsophers contain deliberately concealed
passages whose truths can be comprehended only by a few, and
would be misunderstood by the masses...'the hidden meaning
thesis'...

The Taj Mahal in matchsticks operates on something like the
chimps-with-typewriters principle: any number of people, given
enough time, application and boxes of Swan Vesta could do as
much. The Codex Seraphinianus is rather more special than that.
It may be a folly but, like all the best follies, it achieves
its own aesthetic apotheosis through accumulation of detail,
sheer inventiveness and the ultimate conviction of its own worth;
like all the best follies it is also unique. It might even be
argued that the Codex Seraphinianus is one of the purest works
of fantasy, one that affects no compromise with supporting
narrative or histrionic drama but aims straight for the gold.
Topor was an equally polymathic figure ? cartoonist, writer,
film maker - who still seems better known in his native France
than elsewhere.
Topor and Serafini share a certain naive draughtsmanship which
nonetheless is in the service of an enthusiastic and
deliberately Surrealist (in the original sense of the term)
level of invention. Topor's bizarrely costumed characters
created for the apocalyptic Ligeti opera Le Grande Macabre could
have stepped directly from the pages of the Codex

Codex Seraphinianus , Hallucinatory Encyclopedia
Read in sequence, though, the alphabetical encyclopedia produces
only surreal juxtapositions comparable to Raymond Roussel's
famous encounter between an umbrella and a sewing-machine upon
an operating table -an image taken straight from the files of
hallucination.
So Foucault, commenting upon the Roussel image already alluded
to, reads the "table" upon which the encounter between objects
takes place in two ways. The operating table is most obviously
another image to be added to those of the umbrella and the
sewing-machine.
To name things and to classify them are ways of bringing them
into focus, both visually and as objects of knowledge; but the
Codex brings into focus naming and classifications themselves,
and implicitly reveals their systems of order to be
hallucinatory. If an hallucination is a visual manifestation of
unreal entities, the Codex Seraphinianus is such a manifestation,
designed precisely to reveal the unreality of the encyclopedic
project.
Thus the very last page of the Codex --after what is either a
table of contents in the French manner, or an index-- appears to
be a kind of afterword:
Except that the words on the page are as incomprehensible as
ever, their explanation lost to us along with the author who
feels the need for one last explanation, an explanation whose
subject this time is the entirety of the work just completed. If
we cannot decipher the words, though, we can find a kind of
message in their material chirography. For the first time, on
this last page, the Codex 's text -whose letters have been so
tidy, orderly, and consistent as almost to seem a type font-
betrays that it has been written by a human hand: there are
revisions of the text, with words crossed out at certain places
and inserts added at others. And as we move down the depicted
page, it reveals itself as a depiction by apparently scrolling
under itself (upon the actual page, which of course does no such
thing).
The disturbing implication of this last page, and of every page
of the Codex Seraphinianus , is that the real as we see it
cannot contain everything. Other possibilities are continually
generated by the imagination , and generated above all in images.
Perhaps it is not as important as we thought to determine
whether the images generated are those of the artist, the
dreamer, the fantasist or the hallucinator; for these species
belong to one genus. The images we allow ourselves to see,
whether in the mind's eye or in the world, are a small subset of
the teeming matrix of possibilities. 11 Everything seen outside
of the categories by which we allow ourselves to see the real is
categorized in turn as a merely seeming reality -that is, as
hallucination. But a book like the Codex Seraphinianus reminds
us that categories themselves, with their claims to reflect the
real, may be the most delusory hallucination of all.
