Biblical Personalities: Zipporah
Whoever saw her would acknowledge her beauty. She is called
Zipporah, meaning "look" and "see" how beautiful!
She is called "the Cushite" (Numbers 12:1) because just as the
Cushite woman is distinguished from other women by the color of
her skin, so too was Zipporah distinguished from other women by
her beauty (Sifre Beha'alotcha 99). When the elders were
appointed, all of Israel lit candles and rejoiced for them.
Miriam saw the candles burning and asked Zipporah, "What are
these candles for?" Zipporah told her. "Fortunate are the wives
who see their husbands rise to high position"
Woe is to them," said Zipporah, "for henceforth their husbands

Zipporah had educated Gershom and Eliezer without Moses (Zohar 2:
69b). She waited patiently, with her father, to be picked up and
included in the Exodus from Egypt. It was an extraordinary
destiny - one that involved sacrifice in every facet of her
existence. Although she expressed regret over losing her husband
to the cause of the Jewish nation, she maintained her dignity.
She never became haughty or arrogant because of her esteemed
position.

Zipped Measurements
Zippy got caught up in the performance measurement fervor over
the summer. Never one to sit idly by while the rest of the world
is exploring a new management practice, he plunged into outcome-
based measurement with his usual combination of zeal and blind
faith.
As usual, he started with the grain of a good idea: measure the
value of "connectivity." He determined that there were three
basic variables: number of people served (N), bandwidth (B), and
cost (C).
His basic formula was N times B divided by C. In theory this
seems appropriate. If you can increase the number of people you
serve or the amount of bandwidth without increasing the cost,
you'll get a larger relative value. You also get a higher value
rating if you can provide the same level of service at a lower
cost.
Unfortunately, there were some huge disparities between the high
and low ranges for the variables. Some portable systems serve
only a small handful of people, theater deployable
communications packages serve thousands, and the Navy/Marine
Corps Intranet (yes, he tried to include that) will serve
hundreds of thousands.
He had similar problems with bandwidth and cost. In the systems
he included in his study, bandwidth ranged from 75 bits per
seconds to 100 million bits per second. Costs varied widely from
system to system, too.
Then he had an epiphany. In a rare moment of insight that
transcended his usual "cluelessness," Zippy drove systematic
misunderstanding to new heights by digging deep into his limited
command of mathematics and adding logarithmic functions to his
formula.
Without going into any gory mathematical detail, logarithms are
a way of compressing numbers into very small spaces while
maintaining some semblance of their original relative value.
Using logs, Zippy basically found a way to compress values
ranging from 1 to 1.6 billion into a range no larger than 1 to
10 and still maintain their original value relationships.
Now he was in his element-numbers that didn't exceed his
collection of fingers. A few more tweaks and his masterpiece was
done. Modifiers gave bonuses to systems that could transmit
classified information and were portable. Penalties were
assessed if system users wanted content (like photographic
images) that the system couldn't provide due to bandwidth
constraints.
In fairness, if was actually a pretty good formula. For any
combination of technology we could reasonably expect in the next
10 years, his formula would return a relative value rating
somewhere between 0 to 100. It looked good on paper.
In retrospect, however, the only equivalent mathematical feat I
can recall is when Jethro Bodine (from the 1960's TV show The
Beverly Hillbillies) apparently proved that 2+2=5 for very large
values of 2. Zippy's formula suffered from two fatal flaws.

The first piles were somewhat discouraging. Impurities in the
graphite and the uranium oxide "captured" the neutrons, thus
"poisoning" the reaction. Szilard went to work on industry to
get them to produce purer graphite and purer uranium oxide. He
visited the plants, discussed the processes in detail, and got
them to start making graphite without boron, which is disastrous
for chain reactions.
Getting purer goods
The chain reaction (or plutonium project) was then under the
direction of Arthur Holly Compton, a Nobel Prize-winning
physicist at the University of Chicago. In early 1942, Compton
consolidated the work at Chicago. By July, the piles we built in
Chicago indicated that, with a great deal of material, it would
be possible to build a chain-reacting structure relatively soon,
so it was worthwhile to continue to get better quality graphite
and uranium oxide. Earlier, Szilard got metallurgists and
industrial laboratories to start trying to produce uranium metal,
something that had never been produced before. Industry and
industrial laboratories spent an enormous amount of effort
helping us.
With half a dozen young physicists, a millwright named Gus Knuth,
and 30 kids hired from "Back of the Yards"--the stockyards
district--Zinn got all the graphite machined and the oxide
pressed for the reactor. The pressing and machining "factory"
ran 24 hours a day, with many of us working double shifts.
Meanwhile, Zinn and Herb Anderson shared the responsibility of
supervising the measurement of neutron activity.
We started building the final chain reactor on November 16.
On the morning of December 2, we began by checking that the
neutron intensity was the same as Herb Anderson had measured the
night before. A special safety rod, "ZIP," was attached by a
rope to a heavy weight. The safety rod, which was horizontal,
would be pulled into the pile if the weight was released. The
trigger was a solenoid that could be activated by an ion-chamber
amplifier relay system; if the neutron intensity got above a
certain level, the ZIP would automatically go in. The rope for
yet another gravity-driven safety rod was attached to the
railing of the balcony overlooking the pile. Norman Hilberry
stood by with an axe, ready to slash the rope.
After the instruments were reset, Fermi told Weil to move the
rod another six inches. The pile was still subcritical, and the
neutron intensity was increasing slowly, when suddenly there was
a loud crash! The safety rod, the ZIP, had been automatically
released. The ion chamber intensity--set at an arbitrary level--
had been exceeded, setting off the relay. The crash scared us,
but it was a good test of the safety system.
It was then 12:15 a.m., and Fermi said, "I'm hungry. Let's go to
lunch." The other rods were put into the pile and locked. Some
of us went over to the university's Commons and, as usual when
we were outside the classified area, we did not talk about what
we had been doing. We returned at about 2 o'clock.
The recorder chart showed the neutron intensities for settings
of 11 feet, 10 feet, and 9 feet, 6 inches. The recording scale
was changed several times to better determine the rate of rise.
At nine-and-a-half feet, the rod was within inches of the
critical position. Fermi measured the changes in the rate of
rise, then asked that the safety rod, the ZIP, be put in to
bring down the intensity. Then he told Weil, "This time, take
the control rod out 12 inches." After the control rod was set,
the ZIP rod was removed from the pile, and Fermi said to Arthur
Holly Compton, who was standing at his side, "This is going to
do it. Now it will become self-sustaining. The trace will climb
and continue to climb; it will not level off."
Success
Fermi let the activity of the pile increase and watched the pen
on the recorder chart. It continued to rise as it should, and
the intensity did not level off. At 3:53, Fermi told Zinn to put
the ZIP in. The radiation and the neutron intensity and the
counting rates all decreased almost instantaneously. That was it.
Fermi had successfully brought a pile to a chain reacting state,
controlled it, and shut it down. There were no gongs, no
fireworks.
This was Fermi's style. He checked things--if things didn't work
as expected, you did additional experiments to find the source
of discrepancy. I want to stress that it was a quantitative
experiment, not a dramatic show. There were no surprises for
most of us there, including Fermi. It is very lovely when
experiments work smoothly.

First, the formula produced exactly what he expected. It did
that because he built it that way. It's not the only time I've
seen someone design a measurement that produced exactly what
they wanted instead of reality, but it was the first time I'd
seen it happen accidentally. Zippy's formula awarded values to
systems based on his personal perception of where they should
rank, not on the result of having them. It looked quantitative
and objective, but was really just another exercise in
subjective numerology.
Second, it failed the most crucial test of all: relevance. Okay,
so we're paying a certain dollar amount to provide some people
with connectivity. So what? It doesn't necessarily mean they're
actually doing anything useful with it. Zippy violated the
"Three R's" of measuring outcomes.
First, be relevant. Measure what's important based on your
organization's mission and responsibilities, not its programs or
activities. Address customer needs, not organizational processes.
While bandwidth, system availability and response time may be
important indicators of system performance, they are only
mission outcomes for telecommunications companies, not the
Department of Defense or military services.

Detection of neutrinos seemed impossible. Nevertheless, after
World War II, Fred Reines and Clyde Cowan at Los Alamos took up
the challenge. At first they thought to use the neutrinos from a
nuclear bomb explosion, but then they decided to detect the
large v- flux from the fission products of a nuclear reactor.
The positively charged pi+ (then called the pi meson and now the
pion) stopped, and a single charged particle, the m1 (then
called the mu meson and now the muon), emerged from the stopping
point with a unique energy.

The Hebrew word for "pattern" in verse 9 is tabniyth. It is
elsewhere translated in the King James Version as likeness, form,
similitude and figure. The term "pattern" fits and works for

believe, the root of tabniyth is the word banah, "to build."
Without doubt the meaning of the word indicates something that
has a likeness or a similarity to the final product or to an
original that can be represented in some way. The author of
Hebrews clearly states that on Mt. Sinai Moses saw a
representation of the heavenly Tabernacle, 2

Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the
tabernacle: for, 'See,' says he, 'that you make all things
according to the pattern showed to you in the mount.'"

3?14. The accessories and other items for the Temple are
discussed in 1 Kings 7:13?51 and 2 Chronicles 2:13?14, 3:15?5:1.

Temple. God chose Solomon to construct it. God provided the
measurements and the weight specifications. God provided peace

I've told you before that one of the blogs I visit often is
Pinkdome.com. They are funny as hell, and even if I don't always

Since I liked Sarah so much, I wanted to move to the next book
the trilogy. Zipporah was the wife of Moses. She was nubian, and
just like today, she was ostracized because she was different.
