Neutrons may be lost by being absorbed either by U-238 or by
impurities present in the uranium or in the graphite. U-238
absorbs neutrons but does not fission, hence these neutrons may
be considered as lost.
This would automatically set the motor operating to shoot a
neutron-absorbing, cadmium-plated steel rod into the pile. As an
added precaution an emergency safety rod call Zip was withdrawn
from the pile and tied by a rope to the balcony.
Fermi started the test at 9:54 am by ordering the control rods
withdrawn. Six minutes later Zinn withdrew Zip by hand and tied
it to the rail of the balcony. At 10:37 Fermi, still tensely
watching the control board, ordered Weil to pull out the vernier
control rod thirteen feet
Working with this uranium pile partly shrouded in balloon cloth

Death and destruction threatened at almost every move. Working
with this uranium pile partly shrouded in balloon cloth to keep

and destruction threatened at almost every move.
If the men at the pile escaped sudden death, they might have
still succumbed to slow, painful destruction caused by the
penetrating rays and poisonous radioactive particles emitted
during nuclear fission. As a safeguard against the perils of
such penetrating radiation and poisons, the pile was shielded
very carefully by 5-foot-thick walls of absorbent material.

Description of Circumstances
On May 24, 1993, at the Millstone Nuclear Power Station, Unit 2,
Northeast Utilities (the licensee) identified a leak in a body-
to-bonnet gasket on valve 2-CH-442. This valve is a Velan 2-
inch gate valve which is used to manually isolate the letdown
portion of the chemical and volume control system from the
reactor coolant system for maintenance and local leak rate
testing of containment isolation valves. The valve is upstream
of the automatic letdown isolation valves, and itself cannot be
isolated from the reactor coolant system. Between June 4, and
August 5, 1993, leak sealant was injected approximately 30 times
in an attempt to stop the leakage from the body-to- bonnet joint.

Surrealism in politics
The 1968 revolt in France was arguably based on or included a
number of surrealist ideas, and among the slogans the students
spray-painted on the walls of the Sorbonne were familiar
surrealist ones.
Major himself was the author of the so-called "Manifest of
Socialist Surrealism". In this Manifest, he stated that the
socialist (communist) system had become so surrealistic that it
could be seen as an expression of art itself.
While Surrealism is typically associated with the arts, it has
been said to transcend them; Surrealism has had an impact in
many other fields. In this sense, Surrealism does not
specifically refer only to self-identified "Surrealists", or
those sanctioned by Breton, rather, it refers to a range of
creative acts of revolt and efforts to liberate imagination.
In addition to Surrealist ideas that are grounded in the ideas
of Hegel, Marx and Freud, surrealism is seen by its advocates as
being inherently dynamic and as dialectic in its thought

He thinks that feeling is coming back: "There is a sense of

The Gaebel Manor seemed so calm now. Outside, the rain fell hard
and heavy. Bolts of lightning flashed across the night sky, loud
claps of thunder soon followed. Thunder so loud it would rattle
the windows to the manor, if they had still been there. The
glass was shattered, scattered about the marble floor and the
concrete outside. Trails of blood led from each windows to where
a lone man stood in the middle of the open hall by the front
doors. Blood, dripping from the man's knuckles. It was Judas
Gaebel. His eyes showing no signs of mental stability. A blank
stare.
A lightning bolt flashed across the sky, lighting up the dark
manor. Thunder gave out a roar, and Judas remembered...
"Hello sir..."
Bang!
The butler which had been working for the Gaebels for years now,
dropped to the ground with a bullet wound in the middle of his
forehead. Blood splattered onto the wall behind the man as he
quickly dropped to the floor helplessly. Judas lowered the
Desert Eagle, eyes widened at the sight.
"Againt me!? All of you!"
The words echoed throughout the empty manor. The maid quickly
came into view to see what was going on. Her eyes also widened
at the sight of the dead butler and Judas standing off to the
side with a weapon in his hand.

The occupations movement was obviously a rejection of alienated

The Adventure Of The German Student
by Washington Irving? (1783-1859) (2050+ words)
On a stormy night, in the tempestuous times of the French
Revolution, a young German was returning to his lodgings, at a
late hour, across the old part of Paris. The lightning gleamed,
and the loud claps of thunder rattled through the lofty narrow
streets
He took up a notion, I do not know from what cause, that there
was an evil influence hanging over him; an evil genius or spirit
seeking to ensnare him and ensure his perdition. Such an idea
working on his melancholy temperament produced the most gloomy
effects. He became haggard and desponding. His friends
discovered the mental malady preying upon him, and determined
that the best cure was a change of scene; he was sent, therefore,
to finish his studies amidst the splendors and gayeties of Paris.
There, in a gloomy street not far from the monastic walls of the
Sorbonne, he pursued his favorite speculations. Sometimes he
spend hours together in the great libraries of Paris, those
catacombs of departed authors, rummaging among their hoards of
dusty and obsolete works in quest of food for his unhealthy
appetite. He was, in a manner, a literary ghoul, feeding in the
charnel-house of decayed literature.
Such was Gottfried Wolfgang, and such his situation at the time
I mentioned. He was returning home late on stormy night, through
some of the old and gloomy streets of the Marais, the ancient
part of Paris. The loud claps of thunder rattled among the high
houses of the narrow streets. He came to the Place de Graeve,
the square, where public executions are performed. The lightning
quivered about the pinnacles of the ancient Hotel de Ville
and shed flickering gleams over the open space in front.
As Wolfgang was crossing the square, he shrank back with horror
at finding himself close by the guillotine. It was the height of
the reign of terror, when this dreadful instrument of death
stood ever ready, and its scaffold was continually running with
the blood of the virtuous and the brave. It had that very day
been actively employed in the work of carnage, and there it
stood in grim array, amidst a silent and sleeping city, waiting
for fresh victims.
Wolfgang's heart sickened within him, and he was turning
shuddering from the horrible engine, when he beheld a shadowy
form, cowering as it were at the foot of the steps which led up
to the scaffold. A succession of vivid flashes of lightning
revealed it more distinctly. It was a female figure, dressed in
black.
In the infatuation of the moment, Wolfgang avowed his passion
for her. He told her the story of his mysterious dream, and how
she had possessed his heart before he had even seen her. She was
strangely affected by his recital, and acknowledge to have felt
an impulse towards him equally unaccountable. It was the time
for wild theory and wild actions. Old prejudices and
superstitions were done away; everything was under the sway of
the "Goddess of Reason." Among other rubbish of the old times,
the forms and ceremonies of marriage began to be considered
superfluous bonds for honorable minds. Social compact were the
vogue.
Horrified and frantic, he alarmed the house. A scene of
confusion ensued. The police was summoned. As the officer of
police entered the room, he started back on beholding the corpse.
On taking her hand, it was cold - there was no pulsation-
her face was pallid and ghastly. In a word, she was a corpse.
"do you know anything about her?" said Wolfgang eagerly.
"Do I?" exclaimed the officer: "she was guillotined yesterday
Here the old gentleman with the haunted head finished his
narrative.
"And is this really a fact?" said the inquisitive gentleman.
"A fact not to be doubted," replied the other. "I had it it from
the best authority. The student told it me himself. I saw him in
a mad-house in Paris."

6.0 Product Analysis
The final product from each run was analyzed to determine solids
content and elemental concentration of
the supernate and solids. The solids analysis is shown in Table
3. Total and dissolved solids were measured and then insoluble
and soluble solids were calculated. The run with the highest
uranium had the highest total solids since no attempt was made
to adjust the level of solids in the slurry for the additional
uranium added. It also had the highest soluble solids likely due
to the extra acid added. Table 4 shows the analysis of the
supernate from each run.

Based on the developing knowledge about the effectiveness of
lightning protection systems, and on studies of system failures,
national standards for lightning protection systems were
initiated.
In 1823 the French Academy of Sciences, under the chairmanship
of Gay-Lussac, issued instructions for lightning conductors
The NFPA issued its first document on lightning protection in
1904, Specifications for Protection
of Buildings Against Lightning [Lemmon et al., 1904]. They
modeled their specifications closely after those developed in
the 1882 Report of the Lightning Rod Conference.
These specifications, later identified as NFPA 78, became the first lightning
protection standard in America.
Both the 1882 Lightning Rod Conference report and the 1904 NFPA
report specified the use of sharp-pointed air terminals.

Information Notice No. 85-86:
LIGHTNING STRIKES AT NUCLEAR POWER GENERATING STATIONS
Addressees:
All nuclear power reactor facilities holding an operating
license (OL) or a construction permit (CP).
Purpose:
This notice is provided to alert recipients of a potentially
significant problem of reactor trips and instrument damage
caused by lightning strikes.
Events involving lightning strikes of switchyards and the
consequential impact on power distribution systems are not
covered by this notice. However, INPO SER 76-84 covers this
latter subject as well as summarizing earlier INPO documents
dealing with lightning strikes at nuclear power plants.
Zion Power Station Units 1 and 2
Investigation indicated that a lightning strike in close
proximity to the plant caused either a momentary surge or
interruption in the ac power supply circuits to the rod control
power supply cabinets. This transient tripped the overload
protection devices for the dc power supply cabinet, resulting in
a power interruption to the control rod stationary gripper coils
which caused the rods to drop into the core. The resulting high,
negative flux rate initiated the reactor trip signal. Tests
verified that noise induced on the ac input to one power supply
would actuate the overvoltage protection trips on the main and
auxiliary power supplies. In addition to the noise spikes, one
Unit 2, 24-V positive power supply was damaged by the lightning
strike and had to be replaced

On the other hand, conservatism, ever more timorous and narrow,
disgusts the children, and drives them for a mouthful of
fresh air into radicalism.
Those who have most of this coarse energy, - the 'bruisers,'
who have run the gauntlet of caucus and tavern through
the county or the state, have their own vices, but they have
the good nature of strength and courage. Fierce and
unscrupulous, they are usually frank and direct, and
above falsehood.
Our politics fall into bad hands, and churchmen and men
of refinement, it seems agreed, are not fit persons to send
to Congress. Politics is a deleterious profession, like
some poisonous handicrafts. Men in power have no opinions,
but may be had cheap for any opinion, for any purpose, -
and if it be only a question between the most civil and
the most forcible, I lean to the last.
In trade, also, this energy usually carries a trace of ferocity.
Philanthropic and religious bodies do not commonly make
their executive officers out of saints. The communities hitherto
founded by Socialists, - the Jesuits, the Port-Royalists,
the American communities at New Harmony, at Brook Farm,
at Zoar, are only possible, by installing Judas as steward.
The luxury of fire is, to have a little on our hearth:
and of electricity, not volleys of the charged cloud,
but the manageable stream on the battery-wires.
So of spirit, or energy; the rests or remains of it
in the civil and moral man, are worth all the
cannibals in the Pacific.

Joining Moore and Wasson on the 1956 trip were the world-
renowned French mycologist Roger Heim and a colleague from the
Sorbonne. The party made the final leg of the trip, one at a
time, in a tiny Cessna, but when it was Moore's turn, the load
proved too much for the plane. The pilot suddenly took a
dramatic right angle turn through a narrow canyon and made an
unscheduled stop on the side of a hill. Immediately on landing,
an Indian girl ran out and slid blocks under the wheels, so the
plane would not roll back into a ravine. The pilot decided to
lighten the load by leaving Moore among the local Indians, who
spoke neither English nor Spanish. Later in the day, the plane
returned and picked up the shaken Moore.

ACID DREAMS... by Martin A. Lee & Bruce Shlain
During the peak of the 1968 Sorbonne uprising in Paris a group
of artists and cultural workers got together to discuss how they
could best show their support for those who were engaged in
running battles with the police. Among those present at the
meeting was Julian Beck of the Living Theater, an experimental
performing troupe that traveled extensively in Europe.
Controversy always surrounded the Living Theater, for they were
among the boldest and most innovative experimenters of the 1960s.
Their performances included rituals of love, affirmation,
nonviolence, and communality drawn from various mystical and
contemporary sources: Artaud, the kabbalah, the continuous use
of drugs. The thirty members of the Living Theater frequently
tripped together and often performed while high on LSD. "We were
willing to experiment with anything that would set the mind free,"
Beck explained. "We were practicing anarchists, and we were
talking about freedom in whatever zones it could be acquired. If
drug trips were a way of unbinding the mind, we were eager to
experiment."

As Beck put it, "LSD carried with it a certain messianic vision,
a certain understanding of the meaning of freedom

But that wasn't enough to allay the agent's suspicions. Campbell's
contention that he had learned all about nuclear physics in
college "would appear to justify his explanation that it was
purely coincidental," Agent Riley wrote, though I suspect he
would have been disturbed to learn that Campbell had flunked out
of MIT in his sophomore year, 1931. But in any case, he added,
"in the opinion of informed persons the story contains more than
just an academic course in atomic physics revealing as it does
certain things developed since 1940.
The theoretical use of boron unless it was coincidental is
indicative of quite recent information."
Campbell provided the Military Intelligence man with Cartmill's
address- in Manhattan Beach, California. The link to the
top-secret Manhattan Project based in Los Alamos was too obvious
to overlook. Riley sent word to the California branch office of
Intelligence that Cartmill should be placed under immediate

bomb research. Who had tipped him off? Both Cartmill and
Campbell would need further watching

TASTE OF PARIS
I shall always have the fondest memories of gay Parie, and it

It will simply be the thought of a beautiful French boy, deep

I met him in Chatelet in front of Banana Cafe, where I found it
impossible to resist his smile. I called the shots, he played
by the rules, and I'm glad he agreed to comply. Our eyes played

outcome yet still not sure.
I could sense your strength, and feel your determination.

HOMAGE TO MARAT
(Adrian Mitchell / Richard Peaslee)
Peter Weiss
Four years after the revolution and the old king's execution
Four years after I remember how those courtiers took their final vow
String up every aristocrat
Out with the priests Let them live on their fat
Four years after we started fighting
Marat keeps on with his writing
Four years after the Bastille fell
He still recalls the old battle yell
Down with all of the ruling class
Throw all the generals out on their arse
Good old Marat by your side we'll stand or fall
You're the only one that we can trust at all
Four years he fought and he fought unafraid
Sniffing down traitors by traitors betrayed
Marat in the courtroom Marat underground
Sometimes the otter and sometimes the hound
Fight ing all the gentry and fighting every priest
Businessman the bourgeois the military beast
Marat always ready to stifle every scheme
of the sons of the arse licking dying regime
We've got new generals our leaders are new
They sit and they argue and all that they do
Is sell their own colleagues and ride upon their backs
And jail them and break them and give them all the axe
Screaming in language that no one understands
Of the rights that we grabbed with our own bleeding hands
When we wiped out the bosses and stormed through the wall
Of the prison they told us would outlast us all
Marat we're poor
And the poor stay poor
Marat don't make
Us wait anymore
We want our rights and we don't care how
We want our revolution now
Why do they have the gold
Why do they have the power
Why why why
Do they have the friends at the top
Why do they have the jobs at the top
We've got nothing
Always had nothing
Nothing but holes and millions of them
Living in holes dying in holes
Holes in our bellies and holes in our clothes
Marat we're poor
And the poor stay poor
Marat don't make us wait anymore
Poor old Marat they hunt you down
The bloodhounds are sniffing all over the town
Poor old Marat you work til your eyes turn as red as rust
poor old Marat
We trust in you ....

we had the 'Tiananmen' in Uzbekistan - somehow that massacres on
a bigger scale is not as bad when it is not the Chinese doing it!
Ah well, there was the Shah of Iran, Norriega, Pinochet, and
even old Saddam... A bastard is a bastard when he is no longer '
our' bastard! We simply have to be 'ourselves', our own masters -
make use of the wealth from our own Asian cultures. If it is not
the 'free market' which we practise badly when we are obliged to
have it, it is Marxist philosophy - another import, which we do
badly at too! The main Asian cultures have survived more 'cycles'
than the hopalongs from the West have moved away from wearing
leaves! I like to say we should be teaching their grandmas how
to suck eggs if not find the eggs first!

Existentialism to the Rescue!
Elements from the feared Jean-Paul Sartre Brigade, or 'Black
Berets', will be parachuted into the combat zones to spread
doubt, despondency and existential anomie among the enemy.
Hardened by numerous intellectual battles fought during their
long occupation of Paris's Left Bank, their first action will be
to establish a number of pavement cafes at strategic points near
the front lines. There they will drink coffee and talk
animatedly about the absurd nature of life and man's lonely
isolation in the universe. They will be accompanied by a number
of heartbreakingly beautiful girlfriends who will further spread
dismay by sticking their tongues in the philosophers' ears every
five minutes and looking remote and unattainable to everyone
else.
Their leader, Colonel Marc-Ange Belmondo, spoke yesterday of his
confidence in the success of their mission. Sorbonne graduate
Belmondo, a very intense and unshaven young man in a black
pullover, gesticulated wildly and said, "The Taliban are caught
in a logical fallacy of the most ridiculous. There is no deity
despite the Koran and I can prove it. Take your tongue out of my

Album, a tribute to her childhood. The book was privately
published and was dedicated to the narcissist diarist
Bashkiartseff (1858-1884). For Russian writers Bashkiartseff
became the ideal of the female artist, and her writings were
also dealt by Simone de Beauvoir in her study The Second Sex.
Evening Album was favorable reviewed by Nikolai Gumilyov (1886-
1921), a poet and literary critic, who was accused after the
Revolution of antiregime conspiracy and shot without trial.
In 1912 Tsvetaeva married Sergei Efron, they had two daughters
and one son. Magic Lantern showed her technical mastery and was
followed in 1913 by a selection of poems from her first
collections. Tsvetaeva's affair with the poet and opera
librettist Sofiia Parnok (1885-1933) inspired her cycle of poems
called 'Girlfriend'.
(1885-1933) inspired her cycle of poems called 'Girlfriend'.
Parnock's career stopped in the late 1920s when she was no
longer allowed to publish. The poems composed between 1917 and
1921 appeared in 1957 under the title The Demesne of the Swans.
Another affair Tsvetaeva had with Konstantin Rodzevich (1895-
1988), an ex-Red Army officer. 'Poem of the Mountain' and
'Poem of the End' were inspired by this relationship.

I couldn't decide what to put in and what to leave out. More
than that of course, there was the prospect of others sitting in
judgment, which is what graduate students practiced at most once
they had learned how to hold a sherry glass correctly; and at
the head of the table a very tired former Sorbonne professor
with his blue suit and maroon socks, who had just barely gotten
wind of the Symbolists but wasn't sure that their behavior was
all that correct. We speculated that to survive he must have had
a minimum of three pairs of the maroon socks, but more likely
six or seven, and two of the blue suits. When I finally did give
the talk, a couple of weeks later, he was kind about my
strangled schoolboy French and psychotic demeanor, probably
writing the whole thing off as an aberration of youth, given
that I never really did get to his notion of song which, I
gathered eventually, meant for him the various popular melodies
some of Verlaine's least interesting poems had been set to in
the late nineteenth century.
The use of words posits a sphere in which all impulse
routes may describe themselves freely but always on walls
of thought. Therefore I find that I can only write certain
things. The verbal dimension is never a blank. The room of
the poem is a charged and loaded space. Anyone who has ever
written a poem has somewhat altered the weights and trajectories.
It is as if each succeeding poet will be obliged to invent
his own physics of sense and motion. The resultant scope is
endlessly additional without sum.
On the contrary, there is too much meaning!
As if everytime you wrote or spoke something's name
it was bound to appear in the room, or
somewhere else unknown.
One of those giant cyclotron magnets that continually
reverses its polarity might be a good figure for
(the project of ) our times. Or the heart that will be
open or closed at that precise instant the lightning bolt
strikes one. And the clock that shows us time as space which
diminishes because more and more swept away
in the hand's revolve.
The Mirror of Production is buoyant and inspiring writing in the
tradition of neo-Luddite, utopian, and anarchist works. Along
with the new Situationist anthology, the book may be the
quintessential theoretical document of the best of the
spirit of Paris '68.
Baudrillard criticizes Marx's unreflected acceptance of the
prevailing "code" (political economy) in a typically
grinding, if sometimes impassioned, exposition of these issues.
Baudrillard's style of writing can be critiqued on the same
ground as his attack on Marx for not breaking with "rational
discursiveness" and the "logic of representation- of the
duplication of its object"
The real opposition, says Baudrillard, is "less the monopoly of
the means of production (which is never total) than the monopoly
of the code"
Similarly, men whose supposedly "girlish" ways throw their
gender categorization into some con-fusion ? and these ways may
fall among a number of behavioral patterns from speech to walk
to position in intercourse ? have primary, though "confused",
gender identities projected onto them, defining them. In
explaining her difficulties with gender-tyranization over her
identity, Gail Rubin draws upon both Sartre' s myths of racism
and anti-semitism ? where the Jew's subjective sense is
destroyed by other's sense of him as an object, as "other" ? and
his analysis of Genet's homosexuality, his "situation as the
object which he is to others over the subject he is to himself. ...
The fact that Genet is first an object indicates the origin of
his particular brand of sexuality."
Dickinson employed the strategy of cross-gender terminology in
several poems and letters. I've already mentioned the
pseudonymous "Tim", and Rebecca Patterson reminds us in her
study THE RIDDLE OF EMILY DICKINSON that:
Emily, too, liked to pretend that she was a boy. In her letters
she sometimes spoke of her "boyhood" and in many poems she was
"boy", "prince", "earl", or ' duke".
