Southern Ute tribe fights for removal of toxic waste from
ancient burial ground.
It is said there is a common bond among aboriginal peoples the
world over, a spiritual connection to the earth and natural
forces shared across far-flung lands and millennia of time. The
bond forms the basis for many similar religions practiced among
different aboriginal groups.
Newe Indians, known to non-Natives as the Western Shoshone of
Nevada, have a word for it: shundahai, meaning, peace and
harmony with all creation.
Principles like shundahai don't tend to get included in
government policy. Yet, when it comes to aboriginal "religious"
beliefs about land use, the concept of shundahai transcends
things like Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) policies and
guidelines. It is not written about in any Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) compendium of laws or regulations. The
State of Utah Radiation Control Board does not make decisions
based on those beliefs- but native groups believe they have legal
rights that should force the government to protect their sacred
beliefs.

was look on a map to try and figure out where the hell Cripple
Creek was.
For those of you who have never seen this flick, it's all about

The ORION program supported through the Battelle-Pacific
Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) helped many AISES
students to develop in science and engineering skills. Students
have held intern positions at UAF, through the Institute of Marine
Science (IMS) and at the Los Alamos National Laboratory
(LANL) in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Plans are underway to
develop new internship opportunities at PNNL.
ORION is a network of meteorological and radiological monitoring
stations, central data storage, and processing systems. Data
products are wind direction and speed, ambient air temperature,
atmospheric pressure, humidity, and ionizing gamma radiation.
ORION helps with the EMAP Wadeable Streams project for the
summers of 2004 and 2005.
With 200 randomly chosen streams through out the interior of
Alaska, a team from University of Alaska Anchorage hiked, drove,
and rode helicopter into each site. To assess the condition and
health of each stream, the team collected samples of water, bugs
in the water, and periphyton (rock scum), along with observing
the physical characteristics of the stream and its surroundings.
In addition to visiting a few sites, interns helped with the
paperwork, shipping, and putting together topographical maps and
aerial photos of each site. ORION specifically took soft
sediment samples from the streams for future study of its
radiation content.
A side study was done in the burned area of Cripple Creek, about
30 miles up the Steese Highway. A dozen samples were taken in
this area to observe how fire affects the condition of streams.
Samples will be taken each year to observe the developing
effects.

Opal has a milky translucency, a vitreous or pearly luster, and
forms in a variety of habits ranging from globular to massive.
Opal leaves a white streak on a porcelain plate. Due to a lack
of crystalline structure, opals have a conchoidal (shell-like)
fracture -- the same as quartz. As with many other minerals,
opals vary in color. Common colors include white to gray; red,
yellow brown, blue, green and even colorless. Opal often
contains a trace of uranium, which cause them to be highly
fluorescent with a distinct bright green tint under short-wave
ultraviolet light.

than Martin County. Mining properties included a sandstone
quarry, 3 coal mines, iron ore, kaolin clay, brick clay and
red ochre mines. The sandstone quarry was within the Hindsootan
Sandstone that was free of lime and used in buildings and
