I hit half moon bay expecting it to be totally blown given the
strong winds in the valley but it was calm, and warm.
I hit the water at a spot near town that I used to frequent,
and had a gratifying session for an hour or so, at a high
tide crumbly shore break. . Afterward, I jumped on my
trash bike to cruise north on the trail to see what was happening at a point
break I'd been to a few times.
Drove down to Santa Cruz after and took my daughter to dinner late,
then crashed in the bus and got up for a DP. I was sorely tempted to
go to a north county spot, B told me she'd been having some
incredible surf there being tour guide to her new hawaiian buddies,
but when I checked out eastside it looked good enough for me.
It was nice biking around to find the exact spot I wanted, and
had it to myself for a good hour and a 1/2. 3 ft sets
coming in alternating between close out for 5-6 and a fast long left
for the other one. B's work schedule changed, had to be
at HQ at 8 am, so no buddy this morning.
Had my fill, breakfast at Palomars at the beach, now a couple few
hours of work before I watch the Magic thrash the Lakers tonight.

Socal report:
It was a beautiful day in the park. I heard Russian, German, Freench,
Spanish and English among the tourists. The seals were playing, the
mother gull was sitting on her newborn chick, the sun was out, and the
ocean is warming up.
In the water 3 days straight at my local south swell spot. Very clean,
low key, fun, fast, 4' waves. Good direction with just a touch of
west, enough to make the lefts peel all the way if you were lucky.
I've had to share the peak with usually one other person, sometimes
two these days. Today was with a guy who came down from Laguna Beach.
He's only been out here a couple of times, but I think he's already
converted. Nice kid. We traded set waves for an hour.

Ha!
Strong winds and a bus, oh the good times.
I remember a couple times after a front would come through driving
back to Florida. It reminded me of beating to windward on a mono-hull…
to much weather helm.
Not to mention the semi’s that would blow past me, almost a case of
the death wobbles!
Despite the lack of aerodynamics it sounds like you had a great trip,
uncrowded waves and some good sightseeing on a lazy day.
These are good things.

Every time I stop for gas someone will come up and
say something like that. "Jeez, I wish I still had
my old bus, I had a '63" or something like that.
These days I always reply with some smartass remark like:
"If it was any good you'd still have it".
or
"well, you grew up"
or
"I hate this thing but my wife hates it more, so I keep it to
piss her off"
I will say, it's a comfortable place to sleep, can really stretch
out.
Cops don't give me tickets anymore. It's very odd. I still
have a jillion things wrong with it that are ticketable, cracked
front wind screen, missing front plates, no back bumper,
short in the flasher. I get pulled over all the time in it,
but once they see how old I am and that I've not been
drinking they say:
"yea, well fix that thing..."
then they leave. My daughter borrowed it last summer so
she could get to her lifeguard job, same thing happened to her.
Ten years ago it was an automatic ticket once a month or so.

It probably helps that you removed the "ACID TEST" sign from the bus.
The misses and I would like to get our hands on an old bus too. I'm
kind of partial to the pick-up version.
Strong offshore trades are blowing here. We've been getting a nice
south swell the last few days but man talk about blind takeoffs.Good
fun though. The local buoys are not working properly, but I'd guess
the waves are around 3.5' @ 15 secs offering up some nice OH faces
with challenging drops.
I caught a bright pink inner-tube blowing through the lineup
yesterday, so I deflated it and stuck it under my rashguard til I got
to the nearest dumpster. Lots of folk were looking at me like I was
the hunchback of Ala Moana. I told a couple guys that I can't swim so
I carry an inflatable with me in case the leash snaps.
Every once in a while I will see one on the road and I get these pangs
of regret, then I smell the oil and it all comes back to me.
No thanks, not the cursed bus that I had.
I think the final straw for the bus came when the accelerator cable
came off in route to class in college, I was lying under the bus
trying to get this stupid thing back on enough to make it to campus
and here comes a stray dog. A big mother fucker; I am not certain of
the genotype but I believe it was a cross between a Great Dane and a
Chow or possibly a Beefalo.
I am not entirely certain.
As I was lying under the bus I received a swift muzzle in the crotch.
There are certain involuntary musculature spazams that take over in
any situation of that sort. As you know, the immediate physiological
response is for the species to enter in genital protection mode, of
which I did. Lightning quick pill-bug, rolly-polly, sort of
instantaneous fetal position, this involuntary response brought my
cranium to intimate contact with some sort of immoveable object
beneath my bus at speeds rivaled only by supersonic aircraft.
Stumbling from beneath the bus I saw the beast, which was in the
process of bounding around just out of my dizzy, cross-eyed, reach.
The dog gave me a glance over its muzzle and grabbed my jacket, which
I had placed oh so carefully in the grass; as it was quite a nice
jacket. I let out a string of curses that would have made a marine
proud, threatening this spawn of the Canis familiaris with a death of
biblical proportions. I proceeded to dizzily chase this infernal
hobgoblin screaming obscenities, and waving the needlenose pliers
spastically while blood was running down my face.
The insidious imp finally became tired with me after nimbly dodging
the pliers at least three times, and dropped my jacket. I don’t know
what the beast had just eaten but it appeared to be Thousand Island
Dressing but smelled like stomach virus laden ass-juice.
So there I was walking home cross-eyed, with a massive purple bloody
knot on my head, blood on my face with a jacket full of some sort of
Thousand Island viral ass-juice and my bus in the ditch.
It rivaled the time the bus decide that four cylinders was complete
overkill and outsourced two of them while going through the tunnel
under the river. I am positive there are still my finger marks on that
steering wheel.
Good god we could start a whole thread on broken down VW stories.
But hey if you see a nice Thing let me know…
> Every once in a while I will see one on the road and I get these pangs

I named mine "Suffari".
I told my kids on one breakdown that the bus gives you an opportunity
to hang out in a place like Whittier, you'd never know about a place
like that unless your dad worked for Goodyear tires and
you were born there, or you burn up an engine on the 605.
We also are very familiar with King City.
Mechanics in Costa Mesa, Goleta, Whittier, King City, San Rafael,
Redwood City, San Bruno, and Kelseyville know me by sight and name.
"Hi Sully, those reduction gears still leak on ya?"
I do take perverse pleasure in pulling over to help out stranded
motorists in brand new cars, at least until lately when everybody
has a cell phone. "Can I give you a ride to a phone?"
My son was in the bus with me when we spotted another bus pulled
over, he was 16. A couple young kids, early 20s dressed like my hippie
friends
used to. Cute girl, nice young guy. Bus turned over, didn't start.
Took out my tool box, had him do the greasy work, pulled out
a plug, grounded and tested for spark, showed him how not
to get gas everywhere when you check for fuel flow.
Checked coil spark. I'm always bad at this, they ALWAYS look
weak to me, but since swapping the coil was the easiest thing to
try, I pulled out my spare and swapped wires around.
Brrrrinnnggggg.........
You remember that sound, don't you? He had that thing tuned nice!
I had C mount the coil, tighten everything up, and replaced a fraying
fuel line. The kid offered me $20 it was all the money he and his
girlfriend had. I was tempted because I could have used the 20 at
the time. But, I asked if his girlfriend could just give C and innocent
little kiss in thanks, he did all the work.
She planted a good one on the kid, with a big old smile and a
hug. C grinned from ear to ear and turned the color of rhubarb.
As we packed up and cleaned up and mounted up to leave I told
him:
"don't ever say you never got kissed by a hippie chick!"
>But hey if you see a nice Thing let me know

Andy, If I had been drinking beer I would have had to buy a new
laptop. This newsgroup isn't dead yet.
I haven't played mechanic in the street for 30 years since I replaced
a U joint at an intersectoin where the homeowner build a retaining
wall to keep the cars from hitting his house....again.

Jeez. You guys almost make me nostalgic enough to go buy a Vdub.
Almost. I guess I'm just not that masochistic.
