Dropped off wife and daughter to an event in Kaneohe, so I took the
time to head to the eastside (ES) to check out the swell. A system
just several hundred miles away threw some messy, short period swell
from the east. I'm still benched due to my back injury, so I busted
out my puny 70-200 mm "land" lens and the monopod.

Surf was pounding pretty solid, but the short swell period coupled
with side-onshore winds made for less than ideal conditions. Still, in
lieu of a temporary lack of NW winter swells, nobody was complaining.

Those shots look pretty good for average glass from a monopod.

Limitations are opportunities to overcome challenges and grow.

That guy looks like he rips.

They don't really "close" the beach to the water these days, do they?

Anybody can surf good waves in good conditions.

I thought I was pretty decent on the NS and viewed continental surfers
with some disdain until my opportunity to surf some (70° freezing!)
head-high mushburgers at Lower Trestles.

I paddled in with a new respect for my betters, and the conditions
relative to their "stoke", and a more realistic perspective of going
"pro", as in "that's quite a drastic miscalculation of the skills you
thought you had".

Shooters shoot, as weather and light and labor to tote them within
range may permit.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens. Wouldn't say average glass;
just somewhat short for land surf photography.

Agreed! I've had some great sessions using one swim fin or with a 2.0
Mpixel camera.

There are some incredible underground riders on the NE side.

Surfing good in bad waves is the mark of a great surfer.

Better is relative; as is stoke. A great competitive surfer has the
skills, and at the same time is consistent and versatile.

I try to shoot every surf session of mine, despite weather, light (or
lack thereof), at "toteability." Less a photographer than a capturer
of the moment.

Aloha!

Nice geological formation!

What gpsman said, looks like some skill.

How long you out of the water?
Heal quickly.

Thanks. Supposedly 4-8 weeks. I'm so sick of being drydocked.
