The ECSC came into town this past week, ending on
a rainy, hung-over Sunday. Saturday however, was
nice. The waves were everywhere, causing the long-
shore current to be immense. I'd estimate it was about
10-15 knots. Smokin'. Unfortunately, a 13 year old
kid and his not-so-good-a-swimmer uncle got sucked
out and drowned.
Set waves were breaking way out, and were easily OH.
It wasn't uncommon to see three waves lined-up, each
with a rider on 'em. I of course, didn't surf. I was designated
Ho-dad for the day: makin sure my kids didn't get sucked
out by the rip.
Pics are from a mavica. Most were on full zoom, at an
average distance of 75-100 yds, so they suck. But, you can
get a feel for what the waves were like anyways.

Hey, thanks for those pics. I am returning to VaB next month and am
stoked at the prospect of visiting again after so many years. Your
shots helped me to distinctly remember how unique it feels to surf the
east coast vs. SoCal., just as I have remembered in my dreams, many
many times. I feel a special tie to the place, having surfed my high
school years there.
I'll actually be heading to Hatteras, but will definitately spend some
time, maybe paddle out at (lets see if I remember the spots) 1st st.?
or 17th? How about Sandbridge or the inlet jetties? Doesnt matter I
guess because I know Ill get a ticket whever I go.
Where do you surf around there? How has it been, how is the erosion
thing and water quality? Lets get some session reports going! I'd be
stoked to hear more about VaBch.

Thanks for the pic's. Maybe you could resize them down a little next time.
Making it easier to view them.
Thanks.

Nah. No tickets. The surfing area has been expanded considerably.
Used to be just 1st St. (from the Jetty, north a few hundred yards).

I usually avoid 1st St like the plague. I go to Croatan, mostly. The
municipal parking lot closes after this weekend (Labor Day), so
parking gets to be a pain in the ass until next Memorial Day. I usually
park on the Twilight Park side (north of the municipal lot), and hoof
it a block or two.
As for waves. Well, Steve M. has been reporting on the North end
action, and its been pretty much the same down south. The best summer
I can remember in a while - even with the lack of hurricanes.
A year or two ago, the city decided that a good way to replenish the beach
would be to suck all of the sand out of the ocean just offshore, and blast
it
up onto the beach. Needless to say, they killed all the surfing by doing
that.
So, a year later they spent a million bucks to spray it all back out there.
Classic. Water quality is fine. Certainly nothing like the California
coast,
to be sure. Maybe SteveM can enlighten you better, as he's VB born and
raised (I think).

I did a resize, and it looked even crappier.
So, I posted the full size instead.

What's up with this pic? Did I miss something?

This is actually quite a rad pic with the guys laid back style..
That is all for now,
Gamivia Duke, Esq.
No, I did. The mavica has a slight delay between button-push
and shutter action. Needless to say, I missed most every shot
by a half second. Would make an interesting reader's caption
photo, no? Looks like the guys whalin' away with his left hand.

Yep, this cat pumped into about a 7' backside tube a couple
waves later. Fuckin shutter speed again caused me to be
too late, so all I got was a shot of a closeout, with no view
of him inside. Live and learn.
WHOH noSURFatu-DUDE!
Like, the people wading in the foregrounds are
totally cool, you know, okay?

TD, when will you be in VaBeach and Hatteras? I don't think Sept will
have be down that way but be sure to hook up with Myron and SteveM and
