After a December of mostly overcast skies, rain, and strong winds, the
new year dawned with beautiful weather and a rising swell. Family kept
me away from the peak of the rising surf on Sunday afternoon/eve, but
I got a short window to shoot the next morn.

Cruised out with my dad who was visiting from Kauai, and we talked
story all the way. Good to spend some alone time with him. He always
liked the outdoors, mostly fishing, but did appreciate waveriding.

On the North Shore the Hui was prepping for their opening ceremony for
their upcoming Backdoor Shootout. Looks like they will score some good
surf in the coming week or so.

Good to get in the water and shoot with some friends in the water. Was
nervous going out because last time I brought my dad to the beach
(nearly one year ago) I got denied (http://www.hisurfadvisory.com/
photos/2011/110103_denied.htm) from entering the lineup.

Surf was smallish but clean and sunny and calm. Gorgeous day. Was out
for only a little over an hour, but it was good enough to recharge my
batteries. Back to work now.

When did wetsuits become so popular in HI...? I seem to see a lot of
them in your shots. (tanks, btw)

There was 1 guy who wore a short-john once in a while, but he was
considered somewhat of a kook.

Other than him, I didn't know anyone who owned a wetsuit...

I'm thinking when sponsor houses started getting more prominent, the
surfers were more obligated to make sure they were donning the
products. That's my guess. In actuality the sea surface temps are the
warmest I can remember.
