sigh. Got pitched at OTW while shooting. Landed on my butt and slammed
my spine. Broken back (compression fractures on two vertebrae). I'll
be on the sidelines for a while. No pity me. All I'm thinking about is
getting back in the water.

Backwash was treacherous. Playing in my mind how everything went south
and the only thing I can think of is that a backwash picked me up. I
fell for a very long time. Remember crying out, just yelling, more in
frustration and pain. Thankfully, my boys were there to help me in.
Trippy thing was Jay Adams was on shore offering to walk me back.
Waveriders take care of our own.

Last set of new watershots you'll be seeing for a while from me.

Just keep positive, keep as active as possible, eat well and do your
yoga. I've had two fractured vertebrae, a badly dislocated knee with
major ligament and tendon damage and one of those shoulder things I
can't remember the name of but make paddling sheer agony. I may not be
able to boardsurf anymore at nearly 68 , but at least I can still grab
some great bodyslides.

Hey Neo;

Sorry to hear about your injury, great pics as usual.

Be patient, do what the docs say, come back when it's time. Looking
back on my time out from injuries it doesn't seem like it was long at
all, but at the time it seemed to be forever and a day.

Get better soon, but don't push it.

DCraig.

Bummer, Neal. Take care of yourself and hope you make a complete
recovery soon.

Sorry to hear that. There's been a flood of injuries lately. What the
heck? Were you able to drive home or was there an ambulance assist?

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Neal. You are very fortunate to have
gotten out of the water relatively safely. No more spots like Sandy's
for you in the future - keep to the safe spots like Pipe ;)

Drove to town; drove home. Stiff this morn--better ice it.

What else would you be thinking this early in the season...?

Worst injury I sustained in the water occurred at Marijuana's in 6"
surf. If you've ever surfed there at lower tides you might be
familiar with how the reef there can suck dry even at moderate size
(and how shifty the peak is).

Looking over my shoulder while paddling for an ankle snapper, didn't
think I had any better choice than going for it and attempting a
turn. Got pitched onto the reef, landed on my hands like Superman in
flight.

Broke off a chunk o' reef about .75" square in the meaty part of the
heel of my L hand. One neighbor held the wound open while another
held a hose on it to rinse off the blood so I could see it and I
pulled it out with hemostats. I held it shut for more than 24 hours
before the bleeding stopped.

More worser than that was the ragged foot slice/s sustained from a
submerged rock while running down the beach toward Leftovers
(intending to paddle out to The Alligator). I'd been off island and
out of the water for a month; home for no longer than it took to
change and grab my board. The psychic pain was *far* worse than the
physical, which was substantial enough to keep me off that foot for a
week.

Wishing you a speedy and complete recovery, including for my own
selfish reasons...

(I used to body surf OTW when it was considered un-board-surf-able.
Those were the days...)

You think it hurts now, wait until you're in your 50s. btw, another blue ribbon
batch of envy makers.

Is "Sandy's" the same as Sandy Beach?

At Haleiwa my brother - fresh from the sand bottoms of New Jersey
- made the mistake of stepping off of his board at the end of a
ride.

We were on the beach wondering at the yawning 1.5-2" slice in his
foot when this little local kid - about nine years old - walks
up; takes a look; gets this big grin on his face; and says "Is it
a beeeeeg cut haole?"
