First time back in the water and I was so stoked! Shot the last four
Pipeline Masters and wanted to keep the string going.

Waves were smaller than forecast, but conditions were pretty epic and
it was a barrel-fest from the start. Backdoor was way way better, but
I wasn't ready for shooting that crazy wave. Couldn't anyway since
most of the time I was out, there were the max of two water photogs
out there (I actually started swimming around, before stopping,
realizing there were three shooters out).

Incredible performances by many surfers, most notably Kelly Slater and
John John Florence. Waves looked perfect, but it wasn't--lots of small
warps and backwash, with a prominent inside sandbar.

Because of my back, I was especially nervous to swim out. Didn't want
to miss the crease so I started out swimming out near OTW. However,
the sandar made the lateral rip different and I ended up at inside
Backdoor. Angled towards Gums and then got caught in a strong rip
flowing across the bar, and finally broke through the waves in front
of Ehukai. Fricken long paddle back to the lineup, but it shook off my
nervousness. Ended up staying out for over four hours (with a short
break in between).

Enough babbling. Pictures are worth a thousand words. Here's the rest
of the story...

Think may have been Slater's 9.43 ride. Even from my vantage point
looking straight into the tube, he disappeared completely so I stopped
shooting. Then he got blasted out. Incredible.

It was firing out there but I am honestly frightened about shooting at
Backdoor even when it is smallish. Beautiful waves and beautiful rides
out there that day.

Think this is John-John. You shoulda seen the swarm of people when he
got to shore. Rivaled Slater.

The Hawaiian Water Patrol were out en force, keeping civilians away
and watching over contestants. Here's Mark Cunningham, taking a break
from work.

Though soft (focus), I love this shot. Need to make sure my center-
spot focus isn't pointed at the foreground water.

Wow, as usual. Nice shots, especially of BD. But is that a baseball
cap Mark's wearing? If so, that seems just a mite bit too casual for
mere mortals in those conditions.

Good for you. I guess you're recovered enough from that last drubbing?
You're fortunate to be allowed in the water for the event. I know they
have a strict limit on water photogs.
Great pics, as always.

However,

Shame on you. JohnVan Hamersveld did the poster. He is second only to
Rick Griffin when it comes to iconic art related to surfing and music.
I'll bet most folks know his work, but don't know who he is.
From Endless Summer, to Hendrix, to Sgt Pepper, to the Stones, and on...
