Got to the North Shore just around sunrise. It was big. First view of
Waimea Bay was pretty exciting.

Crowds were already gathering along the Bay's parking and prime seats
(east hillside Point angle and west cliffside shorebreak angle). I
went to the latter.

A gaggle of pro and am photogs had already set up their tripods inside
the road barrier. I nudged between a couple of shooters and started
banging away. Time was a-wasting.

The sun was just starting to peak through the valley, creating this
cool lighting with silhoutte background. Barrels were few and far
between, but if you timed it just right, you could snag a semi-decent
shot.

Out at the point, the waves looked (dare I say) playful from Waimea
Bay standards. Lots of party-waves with multiple riders.

The paddle out still looked pretty sketch, with surfers launching from
the corner nearest us and getting quickly swept west before making it
back to the point on the east. I shuddered knowing that I don't have
the gumption to even consider doing that.

Many took a good running start to get through the shorebreak, avoiding
the floating detritus.

It became quickly obvious that the swell wasn't so pure. Just messy
enough to keep it off kilter. Time was quickly running out, so I
packed up and hurried back to the car. On my way back to town, I took
a few more shots through the open door window.

So nice to be back in the arena, even if I wasn't in the water. The
quarters and on of the Sunset event will run tomorrow. All indications
say the Eddie will run Mon-Wed. Most people are thinking Tuesday.
Aloha!

I'm looking forward to some bodyboarding/paipo/kneelo riding shots
during this swell... from you, NeoSponeMan.
Heh. 6 on one wave. Lot of aloha in the water, obviously.

Nice pix, as usual. Feeling better, I hope. When do you get back in
the water?
