I was wondering if anyone had experienced the same thing...I have assumed it
was hormones or something...but maybe not? About 10 yrs ago before I
started experiencing all kind of hormonal wackiness I had stick straight
very healthy hair. It started to get kind of wiry and wavy. After I
started on the synthroid it actually seemed to get a bit healthier not quite
so wiry anymore...but still every hair dresser keeps telling me how dry my
hair is...but now my hair in the last 6-9 months has gotten quite
curly...and getting more so every day it seems. Now my hair is quite long
too...past my shoulder blades. What the heck is going on? It doesn't seem
normal to me. Any thoughts?

I used to have very straight hair too. When I first developed symptoms of
Hashi 6 years ago (just diagnosed finally!), my hair fell out. The hair that
came in is very different - more dry, more wavy, different color, and
doesn't grow in the same direction. It's like I have minor cowlicks in weird
places. My nails are effected too.

I'm not on meds yet so I don't know what will happen. From what I know about
hair follicles though - the curliness is probably permanent. I'm pretty sure
the shape of the follicle (round or oval) determines the curliness. I don't
think it's reversible. I'm no expert though.

My hair has gone from being silky and straight to curly and course.
The biggest changed happened just as I was turning 15. I'm now 35 and
my hair continues to change. Sometimes it is very curly. Sometimes
it is wavy. But I've never gotten back to straight. :-)

Hormones play a big part in your hair.

If your hair is dry, try a moisterizing shampoo. My current favorite
is Hydrating Curls by Pantene.

Good luck,

I agree - the Pantene products are the best I've found for severely dry hair. I
use the conditioner because it is the only one that could get my hair from the
'haystack' dry tangled feel after shampooing to a silky soft feel. I still have
dry ends, but I use frizz-eez (sp?) for that. I've used these products for
years because they were the only thing I could find that worked - even long
before I was diagnosed and discovered why my hair was so bad!
