How long did it take?

I had one. No big deal. I lay down with my head tipped
waaaaayyy back to expose my throat; doctor stuck needle in
to collect sample, did about 3 of them, it varies how many
times they do it. It didn't hurt beyond the needle pricks
but did feel "peculiar". Little or no pain afterward, except
if I pressed the area that was sampled! and just a couple of
Tylenol was all I really needed.  I had other non-related
problems so was sometimes taking stronger stuff anyway, but
my *neck* wasn't hurting (unless, as I said, I poked at it
to see if it hurt!).

Side effects? Not that I was aware of. The FNA can be
non-diagnostic, which is a bummer. As with any invasive
procedure, there are dangers, but here largely depending on
the skill of the doctor. Mine did just fine.

Repurcussions? I turned out to have cancer, so the
repurcussions of NOT being tested would have been worse!

Time? maybe 20-30 minutes? I don't really remember, but it
wasn't long.

Immediate aftermateh? I had walked the 2 miles to the
building for physical therapy (unrelated to thyroid), had
lunch, then went for the FNA in the same building, and after
the FNA I went shopping, so I couldn't have felt too bad!

Take a look at:

http://www.endocrineweb.com/nodule.html
(www.thyca.org has a nice summarizing section on thyroid
tests with info from endocrine web)

http://www.nmmc.com/nmhc/library/htm/thyroid.htm

http://thyroid.about.com/health/thyroid/library/weekly/aa091

Why are you having this done -- what kind of
symptoms/indications/previous tests have you had?
