I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, and a discernable goiter.

I almost always have a choking feeling in my neck -- and am unsure of
what, if anything can be done about it, short of having my thyroid
removed altogether.

It's not unbearable, but not pleasant, either!

Help!

Hi,
I have Hashi's and the choky feeling also.It makes my voice scratchy
at times and the Dr. told me that it's because it's pushing against the
vocal cords. The scratchy voice is easy enough to live with but I know
what your saying about the choky feeling it's very uncomfortable.I
don't want to have to under go surgery to releive this so I'm hoping
that adding the T-3to the Synthroid might help but so far it hasn't.

I've been fighting the same feeling. Apparently I don't have a goiter
can't prove it by me ) but I darned sure have the choking,
lump-in-my-throat feeling. What do the doctors do? Nothing. Apparently, the
docs don't even try unless it is life threatening or an extremely unsightly
goiter ( and then it is elective surgery for cosmetic reasons ). Is there
anything WE can do? The only thing I've found is to take one of my Valium to
help relax the muscles a bit. It helps some times but other times the Valium
only makes it where it "just doesn't matter". Apparently, getting emotional
over it ( or anything else ) will only exacerbate the problem ( gee, I'm
seeing a recurring theme here ). It seems I spend a lot of time telling
people to try and relax and not worry about it so much even though it sounds
hokey. Hokey!? Possibly, but that is one of the things that does help to
diminish the effects it has on us ( besides, there is little to anything we
can really do about it anyway so why worry? ). If it gets to the point where
it is noticeably effecting your breathing you will need to get a hold of you
doctor immediately. At that point they CAN do something.
Just in case I forget to mention it, the choking sensation is a common
symptom of Hashi's and is listed under symptoms on the Thyroid Manager
Website ( www.thyroidmanager.org ). You can get a lot of information on
Hashi's and other thyroid related issues on that site as well as looking at
www.about.com/health/thyroid and reading Mary Shomon's articles. Lots of
information to be had for the asking.

Hello :)
I've got Graves and feel the same thing. I eventually reached the
point where the only thing I could tolerate was "V-neck" shirts.
Can't wear necklaces either unless they have a longer very fine chain.
Supposedly the meds are supposed to help the size. I don't know about
Hashi's but I assume it must be along the same lines. Keeping fingers
crossed for you :)

Same here with Graves,my goiter is so small it looks like an Adams apple a
wee bit.
I use Fisherman Mint's to get of the feeling and sleep on two pillows if
that helps anyone.

I had the choking thing befor I had my thyroid out....about 5 months
worth...I thought I was going to choke to death....when ever I would bring
it up to the Doc....he or she would say I need to quite smoking....I would
cough so much when I would lay down that I broke the small vaines in my
cheeks.... right after they took 95% of my thyroid out, I never caughed
again like that.....
today after a year and ahalf........if anyone touches my neck or anything
tight, I feel like I am choking....Sherry
