Someone suggested that I try to come up with a comprehensive list of
careers (other than sports) where height can be a definite advantage.

So far I can only think of:

fashion model
actor/actress
bar bouncer
stockperson
construction worker

Can anyone else offer serious ideas (no circus attraction stuff
please)?

Thank you.

school bus driver. most of our drivers are tall.....smaller people have a
hard time with the air brake test because they don't have strong legs or
legs long enough to compensate for strength.
mechanic. ...ever try to fix a pitman arm on a bus? we do have short
people..they are not the ones that do it.
those people that change air filters and lights in offices...the ladders
never quite reach.

: fashion model--the average model is 5'7". but then again, since they
look for all types, esspecially for product promotions....short and round
get a lot of work too. at least thats the case here in proctor &
gamble-ville.
: actor/actress

I'd think over th "actor" entry again; too many of the stars are short
(yes, the camera does lie -- did you know Audie Murphy walked on orange
crates so that he'd appear taller?).

How about:
Painter/decorator?
Hairdresser -- mine is five-aught and he really has to stretch.
Police officer -- height equals authority (well, it can).

We have thousands of fashion models and aspiring here in NYC, the
women are all 5'-9" to 5'-10" and the guys are all 6' to 6'-2".

One tall club member who's a model and 5'-11" has business cards made
up that say 5'-9.5" because she says no one will hire her otherwise.
They make the clothes first, then hire the models to fit -

>: actor/actress
>: bar bouncer
>: stockperson
>: construction worker

I would also add Executive. Surveys have shown that overwhelmingly the
most successful managers and execs are tall.
Also police, for obvious reasons.

I dissent. I love working on cars, but even when they're on a rack, it's
not high enough for me to clear. I'm 6'7". Never worked on a school bus
tho.

How about the opposite? I see from the history channel that the big plane
factories during WWII hired Little People because they were the only ones
that could fit inside the wings of the planes to connect up linkages,
wiring, etc.

Takes both kinds to get the job done sometimes...

But wouldn't that make repair impossible if the plane were damaged and
there were no "little people" around to get into the damaged area?

Sounds like bad engineering to me. I would just put in an access
panel.

Agreed. I do most of the servicing on my own car, and I have many skinned
knuckles from hands that are too big and you ever tried to stuff around under
the dash of a car when you're 6'8? I had to remove the front seat last time
just so I could get semi-comfy ...
