XM satellite radio channel 4 (Forties music) has a daily newscast from
that decade, and this morning it was full of the signing ceremony where the
Japs formally accepted defeat on a USN ship in Tokyo harbor.
Personally, if I'd been in President Truman's shoes, I'd have told the
scientist to keep making the Bomb, and told the Air Force to keep
dropping them, till the two islands had been reduced to black wastelands.

Where'd the name "Kodak" come from?

I am not sure, David, but I think Kodak was one of the first invented
names in business. I bet you can find out more if you go to their
website.

I think if you go the the NYTimes website you can find that out,
Lynn, but I am not totally sure. I get a daily digest of their
headlines in my email and I click on the Today in History link before
going on to the paper itself.

It was my pleasure, Lynn. I was pretty sure that the 'Today in
History' had a look-up option for other dates and everyone of the 366
are in there. Still I would think that what actually gets printed on
a particular date might change from year to year as something
newsworthy happens or someone becomes famous whose birthday was not
recognized previously. Just a hunch.
