hard-core smokers.
Research conducted by Hans Eysenck, a psychologist, has shown the hard-core
smoker is quintessentially an extrovert who craves excitement, is
temperamental (loses his or her temper easily), takes risks, is spontaneous
and is both somewhat unreliable and emotional. Moreover hard core smokers
have been shown in countless studies to have a greater sex drive than
non-smokers, and often have a greater attraction to members of the opposite
sex.
Eysenck quotes these statistics: 15 percent of non-smoking white women
attending college had had sex, with 55 percent of white women smokers
already sexually active. The numbers for men were virtually the same.
Gladwell writes that "the average smoking household spends 73 percent more
on coffee and two or three times as much on beer as the average non-smoking
household."
Gladwell summarizes the heavy smoker's traits as follows:
- defiance
- sexual precocity
- impulsiveness
- indifference (to the opinion of others)
- sensation seeking
They rank much higher on what psychologists call "anti-social" indexes: they
tend to have greater levels of misconduct
and be more rebellious and defiant. They tend to make snap judgments. The
take more risks. The average smoking
household spends 73 percent more on coffee and 2 to 3 times as much on beer
as the average non-smoking households.

I'd say that personality analysis is questionable, and your diagnosis
of smokers as incipient sociopaths is going way overboard. However,
Malcolm Gladwell has some highly interesting things to say about
cigarette marketing via product placement in movies. See this New

Smoking also represents a kind of private language that members within
a certain group speak. It includes them, it represents them, and it
allows access between members. This means there is a tribal component,
and tribes are never easy to wipe out. Think of Afghanistan and Iraq.
If the tribe is a difficult adversary, the individual smoker is just
as thorny. Malcolm Gladwell, in his book, "The Tipping Point," did a
survey of smokers and discovered that smoking "seemed to evoke a
particular kind of childhood memory -- vivid, precise, emotionally
charged." Gladwell realized that smoking was associated with one thing
to just about everyone: sophistication.
The Tipping-People in smoking are often parents who smoke, or even
grandparents. These are the permission-givers who leave an indelible
and powerful print on the young smoker-to-be. It may be someone
outside of the family, but in some way, that person must have a close
connection to the family or the teen, or both. Gladwell quotes this
example:
"When I was around nine or ten my parents got an English au pair,
Maggie, who came and stayed with us one summer. She was maybe twenty.
She was very sexy and wore a bikini at the Campbell's pool. She was
famous with the grownup men for doing handstands in her bikini...
Maggie smoked, and I used to beg her to let me smoke too."

I think it's no secret that sex has been used to sell cigarettes, (both
overtly and covertly) since the dawn of film.
20 year old Maggie doing handstands in a bikini - can smoke all she wants.
Accoring to the previous post - that makes her more likely to drop her pants

Antis have long accused smokers of lying, in hope people will be so distracted they won't
notice all the lies antis tell. Now we see them calling smokers sociopaths to distract
attention from antis' own sociopathology.
The pattern lets us predict what antis will come up with next. They'll call smokers
misologistic, which means hating honest and rational argumentation. Or they'll call
smokers energumen, meaning fanatical about one issue. Or they'll say smokers are stupid.
Mark my words, it will be one of the three. Just remember, it's a smokescreen.

Where it's been done, the impact was minimal.
There was some smuggling but no more than other drugs.

I personally believe tobacco addicts are sociopaths, but about 50
years ago smokers were considered model citizens, and those who
objected to breathing their toxic fumes were considered antisocial.
Sigmund Freud believed that all human behavior was a subconscious
manifestation of sexual desire, and that everything symbolized either
a penis or a vagina, except for the cigars he sucked on incessantly
until he got mouth cancer and had to have half his jaw removed.
Anyway, whether smoking is normal behavior or a mental disorder
depends on the needs of the System. When most people are annoyed by
tobacco fumes, smoking is a mental disorder, but when the government
budget relies on tobacco revenues, then it becomes mentally hygienic.
Officials in a province of China recently ordered all government
employees to smoke more cigarettes to help cover a budget deficit:
"In Gongan county in Hubei province, the order has come down
from above that employees of all local government departments,
organisations, service centres and corporations must consume
at least 23,000 cartons of cigarettes this year..."
Then there is Las Vegas, where non-smokers are in the minority, and
smoking is permitted EVERYWHERE because gambling is permitted
everywhere, and compulsive gamblers tend to be compulsive smokers who
refuse to gamble if they can't smoke. Since the Nevada economy would
collapse without smokers, they become mentally hygienic, and non-
smokers become sociopaths.
