New Reason for Quiting-Buerger's Disease

Hi All....I am glad I found this news group....
I am a 32 year old male, and have smoked Newport's for 15 years. I was
diagnosed as having Bureger's Disease (Thromboangiitis Obliterans). This
disease is a smoker's nightmare. It affects male smokers ages 25-40 and
that's about it. It is rare but I have it and did not belive my doctor
until I had one of my toes amputated last wedenesday. The disease shrinks
the arteries in the limbs and results in amputations. My doctor says says
that the typical Buerger's patient holds his cigarette between his last
two toes!!! The reason I first went to the doctor was that I was having
"pins & needle" sensations in my toes and fingers. Once diagnosed with
this disease, you must quit at once, and no patch, gum, or other nicotine
aid can be used. It is the nicotine that causes the problems.
I have been smoke free for two weeks now and have only lost one toe. I
know the awful consequences of this condition and I will never smoke
again, but I do miss it...Are there any other Buerger's Patients out
there?.....

Today is July 15 and if you quit 2 weeks ago, we would
like to welcome you into the July Firsters, if you would
like to join. There are between 15 and 20 of us, who have
no clue as to what we are doing
Peter is our leader, but we cannot connect to his server

I'm so sorry to hear that you have this rare disease, but happy to
hear that stopping all nicotine will hopefully arrest it!!! Please
stay with us -- it's so much easier to stay smober with this great
bunch of people to help!
I don't wish this disease on anyone, but if there's someone out there
lurking, I hope you hear from him.

Roger,
I am very sorry about this. Thanks for alerting me that this
and who knows how many other rare cig-induced diseases are roaming
out there. I blame my cig use for current gum disease (not so rare, I
know.)

I remember seeing a television programme about this dreadful disease.
They interviewed a man in a Swedish hospital. One of his legs had
already been amputated and he was about to lose the other, but he chain
smoked all through the interview. He realised that he would continue to
have bits lopped off unless he stopped smoking, but had no intention of
doing so. And they say it's not addictive!
