Here's me: I'm 29. I work at an afterschool program, which is only part
time, and doesn't pay well, which is why I still live with my dad. Oh,
also, I still live here because he's cool and we get along and honestly I
think he'd be lonely if I left. :o) My hobbies include karaoke, reading,
and bowling. I am prone to introspection, otherwise known as "thinking too
much." I am trying to lose weight. My hair is all different colors right
now. I have a cat. I think the following things are brilliant: They
Might be Giants, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the Discworld books by Terry
Pratchett.

Sharon aka Shassa aka Shasnar: Age 47, has two teenage boys, has been
married three times (not all at once). She loves her current husband
so much she figures it needed to take three times to get it right and
has been married to him for five years after 'courting' for seven (she
wasn't THAT stupid after all). Sharon went to University late in life
and studied social science. She is still studying and figures after
ten years she should be getting over it by now. Works for the
Victorian State Government in the adult community education arena.
Sharon lives in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia and is obsessed with

I'm a 35 (soon to be 36) year old male. Born third of three boys and
raised in rural Northern California to relatively conservative parents
(FYI, my father smoked). I'm a CPA working with mid-range financial
software. Moved to San Francisco after college and never left because
it's a love/hate relationship (and my aging parents are close by). I
quit smoking on 01/02/2005. While it was somewhat planned, the
clearing of throat and gasping for breath was the real impetus. On
12/31/2004, I had my last day as one of three business partners in an
accounting software consulting practice - one that I helped start seven
years ago. I started a new job (with an actual boss - ugh) on
01/10/2005. The same week, I learned my beloved will need to go to NYC
(for work) 75% of the time. Tough times...but ****no smokes****.

I'm a 52 years old (53 in a matter of days...) married mother with one
son. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, graduated from high
school in 1970, spent a few worthless years at Hillsdale College in
Michigan - but I did learn how to smoke pot and guzzle beer there. I
moved to Florida in 1974 where I spent the next (almost) 20 years
living all over South Florida. The best of those years were spent in
Tampa (the city is TAMPA, not Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay is a body of
water) where I played flute & piccolo with the Tampa Bay Buccaneer
Band - Go Bucs!!!
In 1993 my husband, son and I moved to Iowa. Wanted to get our son
out of Florida, mostly because the quality of the public schools down
there just sucked. Iowa has proved to be a wonderful place to live
and raise our son. I currently have a 30 hr/wk job as a secretary and
I work from home building web sites. I'm a long time member of, and
currently president of, our local community band, the River City
Municipal Band, and I'm a member of the local wind ensemble at The
Franciscan Univ., our local 4 year college. Music is my therapy and
without it there's no doubt I would have lost my mind - what's left of
it - a long time ago.
I smoked my last cigarette on Sept. 29, 2004 at 3:00PM. That was
standing outside the hospital, just prior to my admission. I knew it
would be awhile before I could smoke again so I sucked that puppy down
until it was so hot I could hardly hold it. If I'd known then that it
would be my last cigarette ever I probably would have savored it a bit
more, but.... :-)

Most beautiful. Isn't it lovely how much more time you can spend
working now that you don't smoke? I've started some needlework again
after years of not doing because it was too slow and frustrating. Now I
find it so peaceful and relaxing, not rushing to finish each thread so I
can have a cigarette, and the work marches right along without all those
breaks.

I am a 47 year old husband and grandpa. I grew up in Orange County,
California and spent my last few years there in Huntington Beach. We moved
to Washington in 1980 to get the kids into a healthier environment. When the
lifeguards at the beach needed to arm themselves for their own protection,
it was the last straw.
My wife and I met when I was 18 and she was 30 and it has been an
interesting ride (did someone mention roller-coasters??). She had two boys
who were five and two when I met her. Since I am the oldest of five kids,
and did a lot of the raising of my sibs, I was never gonna have kids, so her
two were enough. Now I have three grandkids and it is true what they say . .

I am a mid-level manager at an industrial plant. I like my job because I
still get some opportunities for hands-on work, I have a lot of autonomy and
I get to be the boss. ;) On the other hand, it is a job and there are
reasons that they have to pay me to get me to show up. lol
I am a recovering addict/alcoholic with almost 10 years sobriety and I find
that I can use a lot of what I have learned in that journey in quitting
smoking, but it doesn't make success automatic. Dammit!
I quit smoking when I met my wife (because she didn't smoke) but I started
again when I became a bartender at 21. I kept smoking until I was 40 and
then quit again. I started up about 3 years later because I wanted to smoke
cigars with the guys at the events leading up to my son's wedding. It took
four more years to get to this quit and in a few days I'll have one year
again.
Current faves
Guitar music - particularly blues at the moment. I can't play a lick, but I
love to listen to those who can. There are way too many great players to
name a fave, but Gary Moore, Albert King, Snowy White and Joe Bonamassa are
right up there.
Mountain Bike riding - I haven't got out much this last year. My fat ass is
a testament to that, but my spring goal is to get back on the bike.
Two-string Kite flying - I love how fast the little ones are and how loud
the big ones are. lol
Everquest - (Evercrack) my current video game addiction - for the last four
years. lol
Salt-water aquariums - I have a 120 gallon set-up and my fish are just like
pets. One of my fish even sits in my hand and eats. ;)
and last but not least - my wife. She puts up with all of my shit and still
loves me. How cool is that! ;)
Drags
I'm really tired of workin' for a living. LOL
People who drive Subarus - I swear that there is a big bucket by the door
and the salesman yanks out their brains by the root and tosses them in the
bucket before he hands over the keys.

Oh Anne! Ooh, ooh, ooh. Sharon gets all excited and starts frothing at

I started the dragon when my oldest son was 2 years old. I started
having trouble seeing well enough to work on it, put it away for about
15 years and finally finished it in time to give it to him for his
18th birthday! I now have the most convoluted setup of glasses,
magnifiers and lighting but there is nothing I can't see anymore.
'Revelation', for example, is worked over single thread 25 count using
2 strands of floss.
;-) And if any non-cross stitchers have stuck with this post up to
here... congratulations on your fortitude!
Do you have any picks of your work Anne?

Did you chart the image yourself? I have often thought of doing this
and have fiddled with a charting program a couple of times but find
there just aren't enough hours in the day to do everything I would
like to do. Do you have a pic available?
Sharon
I agree. And having a hobby that uses your hands is a great
distraction from smoking too.
Interesting to note that each page of 'Revelation' took me an average
of 3 months. The last page took me 3 weeks. Around 8,000 stitches per
page. That's a lot of stitching each night!
Sharon
I used a charting programme - Royal Guild of Needlework - it worked pretty
well. Of course, I decided to do it BIG!

No. Tyke said he liked _Blade Runner_. It's based on the Philip K. Dick
book, _Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep_.
PKD is one of my favorite writers. Other movies based on his works include
_Total Recall_, _Impostor_, _Screamers_, _Minority Report_, _Paycheck_, and
the upcoming _A Scanner Darkly_ and _Next_. As usual, the books and
stories are way better than the movies.

Ok then :-))))
I think the secret to hobbies as a quit smoking aid is that you
actually enjoy it enough that it really does relax you rather than
seeing it as some form of torture. Now I saw somebody reference
mountain climbing as their fun thing. I think I would rather squeeze
my arm in a vice.

Hi! I'm Maude and I've been hanging about here since early 2001 but
my quit to end all quits began on New Years, 2004. I am a 54 year old
widow with two grown sons, a grandson, two lovely black dogs and an
evil kitty. I live in the boondocks of Upstate NY, in the US, in a
tiny house that is in the process of falling down around me.
To keep the wolf away from the door, I teach secondary English at an
alternative high school. My students have been permanently expelled
from their home schools, mostly for behavior-related problems. Their
language is loud and vulgar, but their insights are often brilliant.
For fun, when not frozen into a solid block or covered in feet of
snow, I run dog agility with my doggies. This involves driving
hundreds of miles on a Friday, setting up camp, sleeping in the van,
running back and forth to the competition ring all day to finally get
a chance to run the dog in perhaps 4 runs of less than a minute each,
packing up the gear late on Sunday and driving back home. My original
agility dog was my American Blackdog (Rottweiler/Lab/Shepherd mix)
Curly, but she has developed arthritis in her shoulder now and will be
running infrequently. My main dog now is the Ditz (Aussie mix?) the
Whitefoot Blackdog.
I like to read anything, but my loves are Fantasy and Science Fiction.
My favorite authors? That's a tough one. Mostly the women, I guess -
Anne McCaffrey, Ursula LeGuin, C.J. Cherryh. Believe it or not, my
favorite films are Jesus Christ Superstar, Willy Wonka and the
Chocolate Factory, and Blazing Saddles. I belong to the Society for
Creative Anachronism (Maude of Olde Church at your service) and I am a
kitchen drudge at the Pennsic War (12,000 people camping and doing
medieval stuff for 10 days) every August.

> and we lived in a cardboard box.

You had a box?
Our box was shared by three families!
Not that I saw on www.imdb.com
Met my wife (Patty) in 1990. Took four years to propose and we were engaged
for nearly two years before tying the knot nearly nine years ago. Biggest
change I've ever been through. She concurs. Tough getting used to living
with someone after having everything your way for so long! It's been work,
and more than once nearly fell apart. We're doing better with each other
since we quit smoking than we ever have. Go figure. The thing which we
thought would have us at each others throats made us *immediately* closer.
Hobbies: Travel. An obsession. Hawaii. A bigger obsession. We've been
to a few other places, but we always are drawn back to Hawaii. If you're
sitting within earshot and I hear the word "Hawaii", it doesn't matter if I
know you or not, I'll find a way to get into the conversation. Patty thinks
it's a hoot when I do that, because I'm normally shy around people I don't
know.
Love to work out. Okay, I love to ride my 24-speed LeMond Nevada City
during the summertime. Working out is just a method to keep the weight down
during the colder months.
During the summer, as I said, I'm biking. During the winter, I like to bowl
and watch hockey. And plan our next trip with Patty.
I'm a computer pack rat. I have stuff on this current Dell going back years
and years, stuff which I may never look at but I like to know it's there if
I ever want to. No particular reason for this. It's just me.
Same thing with videos. Have a collection of nearly 600 VHS video tapes.
Gonna turn those into DVD's as soon as I can decide which one to buy. Good
project for the next two or three years :)
I have an extremely addictive personality. Find me something which I like
to do, and I'll become addicted. The only thing I've ever found which
didn't fit this profile was gambling. I like it, but I can take it or leave
it. No idea why that is. Maybe I'm just cheap and don't like the idea of
losing money. This didn't stop me from throwing away thousands of dollars
on other addictions in the past, however.
Recovering alcoholic/drug addict/nicotine addict. Recovering from alcohol
and other drugs for 22 years, from smoking for three years. odat.
I'm impatient with others most days and even more so with myself. Riding
with me, Patty hears usage of the English language which she just doesn't
hear other places. Mostly not G-rated. How this can possibly fit into an
odat philosophy, I'm not clear on yet.
No pets. No kids. Was working on the latter but will probably settle for
the former at some point. Dog lover. Cat tolerant.
One brother. One sister. More similarities to both than any of us would
care to admit...heh heh. Parents both deceased from lung cancer.
Born and raised in Duluth. Never left. Probably never will. I bitch and
moan about the winter cold and snow but there is a beauty to this place and
a low-key lifestyle that keeps me here.
Favorite color: Gold (used to be blue)
Favorite food: Pizza Luce (unless you've ever been to Duluth or the Twin
Cities, you won't know just how good this stuff is)
Favorite beverage: Lemon-lime Gatorade. Or water.
Favorite sleeping position: On my left side.
Favorite place to be: Hawaii (of course)
Favorite way to spend a winter evening: Watching movies with Patty and
laughing.
Interesting topic.

I'm 45, was married briefly in what feels like a previous lifetime, no
kids. I'm a partner in a deli/grocery/convenience store in East
Hampton, New York.
This is my third serious attempt at quitting, spaced out over about 12
years. The first two lasted just about three months each. The third,
five years ago, lasted nine months. Then one drunken night....
About a year and a half ago, I became an insulin-dependent diabetic,
so there's more at stake for me in this quit than ever before.
Smoking's a bad idea for anyone, but especially diabetics. I have the
added incentive of a broken collarbone that won't heal and will
probably require surgery. My doctor told me my best chance to have it
heal was to quit smoking. He also told me nobody ever actually quits
when he tells them to, so I'm looking forward to seeing him in a few
weeks and telling him I really did.
The last thing I need is a plate on my collarbone. I already have one
in my right forearm, and some rubber-band like thing in my left
shoulder. I've also had surgery to remove a disk in my lower back a
couple of years ago. I'm currently recovering from six broken ribs, a
herniated disk in my neck, and capsulitis in my shoulder (the right
one this time) that's had me in physical therapy for seven months. I'm
gonna leave an ugly corpse.
This is nearly all a result of my favorite pastime - riding
high-performance motorcycles like a lunatic with no regard for my
safety or the safety of those around me.There is nothing in the world
I'd rather do than pack up the bikes with my buddies and head to the
racetrack for a weekend of trash-talking and riding a little too close
to the limits of our abilities.
I'm also an avid guitar player and golfer, when my body parts allow me
to.

I guessed that a couple of paragraphs back :-)
There's nothing like crazy motorcycle riding to make the orthopedic

Congratulations on getting down to business and quitting that nasty
smoking.

Hells bells Dave! As your new quit triplet, I have to tell you my

My hubby plays guitar. HIs band is laying down some tracks this week as

Just sold my Fender Strat in favor of a Telecaster - your hubby will

three amps. They all sound different, ya know.

I imagine they're really expensive over there. They're made only a few
hundred miles from me and you can buy them here for well below MSRP.
In another thread I mentioned how here in the US we can't make a
decent beer or motorcycle. One thing we do very well though, we make
the best electric guitars in the world. I was in London and couldn't
believe what American guitars cost over there - more than double what
it would cost here for a used Fender or Gibson. I would think it's at
least as expensive in Australia.

I grew up in a tiny town in northern Illinois near Chicago surrounded by
corn fields. I have 3 siblings. A brother and two sisters. My brother is
33 and is working in Kabul, Afghanistan (his second week). My older sister
is 40 and my younger one is 19 and has the only nephew (or niece) I have to
date. He's just a year old and I wish I didn't live so far away. I want to
see him more. I'm the oldest of the bunch at 42. I have three boy
children, 26, 17, and 14. My oldest one drives all over Wisconsin,
Minnesota, and sometimes Illinois and Michigan paving parking lots. The 17
year old is an artist and plays self taught keyboards and guitar. I'm lucky
he's taken to the rock classics I love along with the real classics I also
love. The youngest one loves to skateboard. He's already decided that he's
going to the U of Hawaii on a full scholarship after he gets out of high
school . They are such good kids that sometimes I hardly believe it. How
did *I* end up with *these* children? I raised them almost singlehandedly
until I met my now husband almost six years ago. I worked alot but always
made sure they didn't go to sitters/daycare. Total juggling act.
I've got a degree in Accounting but found out that was what I didn't want to
do with the rest of my life. Worked mainly as an executive assistant until
I got married for the second time to my now husband of 3.5 years. Stayed
home to care for his 'baby'. A ten year old all white female bulldog named
Rosie. Some folks here have heard about and seen pics of her. She was a
dear old thing who was so full of personality. She passed away this last
May at the ripe old age of 15 and I still miss her. So now I'm home all day
with not much to do. I do like being here when my boys come home from
school but wish I could find something to do with my time. I'm also a PTO
Rep for the high school but it doesn't take up that much time. Probably
part of the reason I'm here now at AS3. I have a bunch of stuff I'd like to
sell on Ebay but I'm kind of intimidated by the whole process. I think I
need a kick in the ass or something in that direction.
What do I like?
I love to bird watch. There is right at this moment a redheaded woodpecker
on the pole right outside my bedroom window. So pretty.
I love to pick through junk at flea markets and yard sales.
I love to garden, veggies and flowers. Right now I have some newly frozen
pansies and brocolli.
I love cool people. I can be anywhere and attract the life stories of
strangers. My husband is amazed at the things, people I meet for a moment,
will tell me.
I love music, all kinds. The stations on my car radio are tuned to Rock,
Pop, Country, Classical, Talk, and Rap.
I love to travel to new places.
Other things too numerous to mention.
What do I dislike?
People that neglect their children. Physically and mentally.
Trash thrown just anywhere.
People that wouldn't know humor if it jumped up and bit them on nose.
People that get upset with honesty. Get your ostrich head out of the sand.
:D
Judgemental assholes.
I showed up at AS3 when I had been smoking for close to 27 years with just a
thought of quitting. This place so impressed me that I set a quit date that
was two months away after reading here for a few weeks. I ended up quitting
more than a month ahead of that schedule and have been quit ever since. I
was one of those "never going to quit" kind of people. Never say never. :)
My gratitude to this newgroup and the people that were here when I showed up
thinking about quitting is tremendous. My entire life has changed and I'm
grateful I don't have to smoke ever again.

You are right on there! DH has become intrigued by my bargain buys

view to selling rather than buying (I just like spending money). He
reckons if he purchased from the U.S he could still make a profit

I will be 43 this year (hi Kimberly :) ) Grew up close to Zurich,
Switzerland. Close meaning 20 minutes highway to Zurich. Zurich is the
biggest town in Switzerland, big meaning shy of 300K inhabitants.
Wasnt kicked out of catholic school, wasnt clever enough to make that
happen early enough ;) Seriously, went to a boarding school of catholic
nuns at the age of 13, and havent lived with my parents more than a
couple months since then. Left the school after 4 years, without the
degree. Just had enough :)
Finished the degree later, on my own. (we call it maturity, we get it
after about 13.5 years of schooling, not counting kindergarten. Not all
choose to go to school that long, most learn a work after about 9 years
of school)
Didnt know what to do after, so I worked as blue-collar in production
plants, and in large supply buildings (word?). Funny thing is, I worked
in a line producing cig-filters for a while. Ugh, you dont want to know
how they are produced. EVERYONE had a cough from the yucky material that
goes into them.
Then, further education to stocks administrator (making up terms here,
since I dont know what they are called. Hope they are clear-ish at
least), then hopped to dinosaur comps, and later PCs, support and
teaching. Later to accounting. Started studying psychology sometimes, so
every job after that was only part time, enough to live off. During my
studies I had to take all the practical terms we had to take at
university, working in psychiatric hospitals, half-way houses etc. made
it impossible to work for money for a while. Glad I had some $$ to the
side from former jobs.
Before, and after the degree I worked in psychiatric science for 5
years, conducting studies on my own, and with others. Then I had that
idea of being self-employed, and founded a couple companies. Took too
many debts for the companies, now I work them off, again mostly as
accountant, since jobs which require university training are even more
scarce. Currently unemployed. (My companies still exist, just without me
:) My friends were clever, and invested less personal money)
Broke up with my BF last year. Was the second relationship we talked
about marriage I ever had. (apart from many we only talked about fun :)
) The first one that we talked about it, he got what we call 'cold
feet'. This time, I got the 'cold feet' when it got seriously serious :)
He was much younger, and still alot into finding out how life works
(like if you really really need a job to pay the rent :) )
Besides working I read alot, mainly fantasy. The list is too long to
name, my current favorites are RA Salvatore, and Tad Williams. Usually,
I very much like the lady writers (Robin Hobb! LeGuin, McCarthey, MZ
Bradley etc) Apart from that, I like to play an online RPG - Clan Lord
(similar to EQ I guess, just on Mac). Like to dance, listen to music. I
am hopelessly retro :) 60's to 80's are still my favorites, all kinds of
music, and older jazz. Also like alot of classical music, but not for
everyday listening)
Used to do all kinds of textile crafts. Literally all :) (counted xstich
was one of my favorites :) ) Plus beading. Someday I will have the money
to do that kind of stuff again :)
So, hope the language is not too bad. This kind of post always makes me
realize how *little* english I know :)
Oh btw, I am looking for a job worldwide :) Oops, hope that is not spam,
so I dont say more ;)
Got a bit long. Ah well, shortening it now would take nother hour at
least, that I dont have.
Manuela
>Put that off too. Not sure my english is up to the task :)
Manuela you did *really* well! Wish I cu old speak a second language.
I went to a girl's secondary school where they specialised in how to
hang out the washing and how to choose the correct cut of lamb. You
know, all the practical skills needed before the equal employment
opportunity laws were changed.
So, like you, I was also a late study.
>Finished the degree later, on my own.
I did a double major in psychology and sociology, pursuing sociology
into an honours year and now into a Masters. I WAS going to be the
world's greatest family counselor, then realised why settle for
individuals. Sociology lays open the whole world at your feet. That's
why I am now studying public policy.
Bwaahahahahahaha

I worked in a processing plant in another life as well. This one was

fond memories of the factory work. The people were amazing.

I LOVE Tad Williams and have read the entire Otherland series. Have
you read any of those? Acquired The Dragonbone Chair the other day and
will read that some time in the next few months. I ah ve some others
to get through first. I have a fairly eclectic taste in reading. Just
finished The years of Rice and Salt, by Kim Stanley Robinson and
before that, Louis de Bernieres' Birds Without Wings Have just started
People of the W9lf series by Michael and Kathleen Gear. My favourite
author at the moment is Anne Rice. I can't seem to get enough of her
vampire chronicals, even though the last couple seemed a bit self
indulgent.

Again I have an eclectic taste in music. I like older jazz, all blues,
blue grass, gospel, classical, nearly anything 60s, whatever.

I cannot have somebody who enjoys doing counted cross stitch NOT doing
it if they want to. It costs almost nothing to do. Charts are so
cheap, as is embroidery floss. Fabric can be expensive but I have
recently purchased some through eBay at a fraction of the retail cost.
And you can always save them for framing later. I have some patterns I
have finished with. Is there a particular style you like? Maybe I can
send you something?

Manuela,
There is no reason in the world for you to apologize for your english!
I'm always amazed at how well those who speak/write english as a
second language do in newsgroups and on web pages. If you speak it as
well as you write it you're doing better than a vast majority of
Americans, I'm afraid.
You certainly know **much** more english than I know of any other
language. I studied German in high school (note I didn't say
*learned*) but the only thing that's stuck are a few choice cuss
words. ;-)

I didnt smoke at the time. I er, was in other stuff :) Well, I smoked
all kind of stuff, but not for the sake of nicotine. I sniffed, ate,
smoked any illigal or partly legal drug that was available at the time.

Absolutely! Those are some of my best experiences. I have to say, not
the least though, due to seeing under what conditions such a big part of
the population has to work their whole life long.

Read? Gobbled up!!! I soon gonna read them again. Just read the War of

Yup, me too. The 'whatever' stops at techno for me though :) I guess I
feel like the middleaged - old ones when Jazz was young, I just dont
understand it, it is simply 'noise' to me :) Cept what they call
'Jungle' here. With a bit of alcohol that is actually quite good :)

Awww, that is so sweet of you!!! I have patterns. Know Beth Russel, and
Candace Bahouth (or similar). I just LOVE them. I guess everything is
VERY expensive in Switzerland, and when you are unemployed it is simply
a matter of do you want electricity in your appartment or do xstich. But
maybe I will take some of my cig money to spend on a small pattern. Had
planned to get me a TV, since my old one is broken, but that can wait I
guess.
Oops, wrote longer than I should. WAY past bedtime :)
