Begin by believing in yourself.

"Today is day one of your quit."

...and remember, you haven't always been trying to quit smoking because you
want to keep smoking. Keep the quit!

Good luck! :-)

You have my full support to kick the nasty addiction. You have all of our
support. One moment at a time, please remember that. Put one foot in front
of the other and move in the right direction. Your body will thank you
later.

Stop thinking "attempting again." Start thinking: "I've quit." Your
commitment must be rock solid and your attitude must be that of a
non-smoker. You don't smoke anymore. You will never smoke again.

You CAN do this. We're all here for as much support and encouragement
as you need or want. Just keep posting and reading.

You don't smoke anymore. Period. End of discussion.

Really.

Welcome to AS3, Esperanza! This is the place where we do rant and
rave and get smober and enjoy it at the same time. Do take some time
and look at our unofficial webpage, www.quitbuddies.org. It contains
our FAQs as well as a lot of other good stuff about smobriety as well
as pictures of many of us and more. Do post and read here as much as
you need as we all have been there at one time or the other and can
give you support and insight to keep on keeping on. Are you doing any
sort of NRT? Write back and let us know how you're doing soon!

Hello Esperanza. Hundreds of people, maybe even thousands by this
time, have quit smoking with the help of this Newsgroup. I came here
with a long history of trying to quit and never quite getting there.
The members of this group are experienced quitters. We know how tough
it is. But we also know that it can be done.

Come here often. Learn as much as you can from the experiences of the
members of AS3. Use any kind of quit aid (nicotine replacement
theapy) that works for you; for instance, I used the nicotine patch
but there is a new medication out now called Chantrix that works well
for some members.

We are all rooting for you.

Be strong. Don't smoke. Not even one. Especially not one.

Esperanza! It's good to see you back.

First and foremost, please stop thinking of it as of an attempt! Think
of it as your final quit! When you say "attempt" you sort of give
yourself a pullback excuse before you even start.

I suggest you red and post more, that will definitely help. As for
advice, I am sure that you know it all by now, what you need is
support, and here we are to root for you and hold you and cheer for
you and pat your buck! But you have got to do the running part
yourself. No one can replace you in your shoes. Read and post read and
post read and post! You can do it and you WILL do it!

I'll probably get some grief for this, but what the heck. (Welcome
back, Esperanza, by the way). I will agree with the need for strong
commitment, but (at least personally) I can't say I will never smoke
again. That is just too lofty a goal for me.

I think many of the "step" programs have a similar philosophy. I
choose instead to vow not to smoke today. I cannot control what I
will do in ten years, or ten months or even ten days. But I can
generally control what I do today. And today, I will not smoke a
cigarette. I don't know what I'll do tomorrow, but I suspect I'll
make the same vow. It gives me an "out" when the day gets stressful.
I have a problem with the word "never" and it doesn't win many
internal arguments when I'm stressed.

Of course, there are those in this newsgroup who would say that it's
obvious I can't control what I'll do in ten months, since I've never
quit longer than eight. But, my opinion is free and you get what you
pay for :-)

Cheers,
Rob

Welcome back Esperanza. You've certainly come to the right spot (as I
think you already knew) for support. I'll ask one thing of you
though. Please submit your name for inclusion on the Quitlist. This
will do two things. First, it will strengthen your resolve. Second,
it will GET ME OFF THE TOP OF THE LIST. I've been quit for over six
weeks and I'm still the top name on the list. Geez :-)

Anyhoo, welcome to AS3!

Cheers,

For what it's worth, Billy Bob, I think you are right. As a Stepper
myself, I never could get my head around quitting drinking forever. I
could, however, grasp quitting "just for today." That was do-able, that
was possible. Over time, I began to understand the nature of what I was
up against, and things changed somewhat, but One Day At A Time was, and
still is, a most powerful concept. In fact, just fyi, I used that same
concept to quit smoking... ;)

AA's ODAT works for smokers also, I don't dispute that.
BUT...for me, a compulsive, immature serial-quitter...
until I realized that I could never EVER take another puff, I always had a
fallback...
and I always used it.
When you decide it is forever, there is no longer any internal debate over
the matter.
You quit.
Case closed.

I say whatever works for you sweetie...and if it doesn't work...try summin
else.

xoxo,
Cat
