My sister said "Now you know how we non smokers have always felt. We
just have to learn to deal with it."
Sorry I did that to people. Hard to believe I was ever a smoker.
My New Years wish for all of you is that smoke will make you a little
sick. And I mean that in the nicest possible way :)

My sister has said similar things. How she tolerated being surrounded
by smokers for so many years is still amazing to me.
At this point in my life I firmly believe that non-smokers/ex-smokers
should never have to "learn to deal with it." Smokers should have to
learn to deal with smoking in an area easily avoidable by anyone not
wanting to inhale their smoke.

I think I will always be horrified that I also did that to people.

I think I was always a little bit sick since starting to smoke. That
"little bit sick" was never enough to stop me from lighting up the
next one.
Happy New Year!!

Doesn't Edna Pearl have a motorcycle jacket with this embroidered on the

thanks Annette,
and I for once wish that your wish goes true. Feelling a little sick
from smokers is a good thing and I hope it will be strong enough that
I will always be able to remember what not to do.

Happy New Year!!!!!!
That didn't happen to me right away. I thought I was pretty
much alone with a smoking problem. I realized it had gotten
out of control and tried first to cut down. After that failed
miserably, I sought out ways to quit. After a couple of failed
attempts, I succeeded and was glad to be free of it.
It was sometime later (years) I realized not only was I not
alone nearly every smoker couldn't control it. You'd ask them
not to smoke around you (in the workplace, yes, there was
a time you could) and they'd either laugh at you, become
peeved, or ignore you.
Curious about why the drug worked that way, I resolved to
find out more about it. What I found was what the tobacco companies
were doing. All they had to do was get you started.
Even though they claimed nicotine was not addictive for
decades after I quit, they knew otherwise and used that to
get new customers and keep the ones they already had.
I didn't need to hate smoking to keep my quit going. I just
didn't want to be slave to it. I wanted to be like nonsmokers
who didn't need to smoke. They seemed quite happy doing all
the things I was doing without needed a drug.

Yet they did. I had many friends who didn't smoke and didn't
seem to mind being around it. Of course, that was way back
when you really couldn't avoid it. Smoking was everywhere.
Really, everywhere. You were used to it. The smell didn't
stand out like it does today. Cars were dirty. Smokestacks
were stinky. Times have changed.

We didn't know. And our friends didn't tell us. Maybe they
didn't want to insult us, or knew it wouldn't make a difference,
or, maybe still, they didn't care because they were used to it.

That's true for all smokers but they can't appreciate how they've
become ill because it sneaked up on them gradually.
Like the frog in the pot of water slowly brought to a boil.
That they continue is further evidence of the awesome power
of nicotine to compel the user to use more of it regardless
of the consequences even though it doesn't do much of anything.
A beer and a cigarette go hand-in-hand they say but what is
the cigarette doing that the beer isn't? What they don't realize
is the cigarette is making its pushers rich and the smoker ill
and that's about all.
