Wow, Geri.. welcome back. I was just thinking what happened to Geri, as I
thought it had been much more than two weeks since you've been gone. How's
the football team doing?
Cal~
The football team is doing pretty much as expected. Our QB is a sophomore
who has started his first 2 times in the first 2 games. He was recruited to
play a triple option offense and our new coach (who we love) is installing
the West Coast Offense (ok, so one good thing has come out of CA) -
basically putting round pegs in square holes. So we are having a bumpy ride
after two games. The first, against patsy Western Illinois was a blowout
win. The second was a loss based on turnovers, even though statistically we
overwhelmed them. (However, it is the W/L that counts.) That game went
right down to the last seconds of the games - one of those heartbeaters. (I
hate those - I like blowout wins.) I was fortunate enough to get tickets
for both games. (No easy task in a NCAA record 264 consecutive game sellout
situation like Memorial Stadium.) The Husker Faithful are not expecting a
national championship the first year with a new coach and new offense
system. However, from what we have seen thus far, things are very, very
optimistic. BTW, I was in this last weekend - it was a pregame tribute to
9/11. I was in one of the white stripes.
The rest of the vacation was awesome, too. I had a great time with my
family. My mom and dad are starting to show their age some, which makes me
sad, even though they are both going strong. We all got kind of tearful
when I had to leave.
I got to do a lot of shopping with my mom and sister and bought a bunch of
cute new clothes. I finally got my Husker Horn for my car, a new Husker car
flag and antenna flag, some new Husker gear to wear, as well.
We went to Nebraska City one day and toured Arbor Lodge and went to a 1936
old country school converted to a winery for a little tasting (and a lovely
souvenier glass - haha!) I brought back some delicious Nebraska wine for
Brian. (I try to patronize Nebraska products whenever I can.) We went to
Omaha and saw an IMAX program about Louis & Clark and to the Nebraska
Western Heritage Museum, which was very cool. There is nice display of
Omaha's history (this year is Omaha's 150th birthday celebration). They
also had a traveling display from the Smithsonian that included Captain
Kangaroo's outfit, Mr. Moose with ping pong balls (my favorite as a kid -
really cracked me up), Bunny Rabbit and that clock with the moving eyes. We
went on a tour of the Nebraska Capitol building and we visited the Nebraska
Museum of History, too. We also found the spot that the Platte River joins
the Missouri. While we were there I was able to get a photograph of a
turkey in the wild, so I hope that turns out.
My brother and I went out to a "Prairie Festival" out in a protected prairie
area outside of Lincoln that has never been plowed, so the prairie grass is
about ten feet high with lots of natural wild flowers. This started just
before sunset. They also had various people on the walking path that taught
various things, like a couple of nature photographers that showed us some
neat techniques, a doctor from Grand Island that talked about medicine
practices during Louis & Clark times, a guy who taught dutch oven cooking
over a campfire, a reinactor of one of the characters from the L & C
expedition (complete with the Newfie dog) who gave a program, the Nebraska
poet laureate doing a reading and some others. It was very fun and
interesting.
I bought like ten books while I was there - pretty much all Nebraska history
stuff. It is funny because when I was growing up I used to Bitch! And!Moan!
when my parents dragged us around to this stuff and how it is what I want to
see when I am there (besides football and family).
I ate fabulous Nebraska steaks/prime rib several of the days I was there,
plus we got to eat at my other favorite places.
I could go on and on all day, but suffice to say, I had a great time. I
took 15 rolls of film while there. I have never scrapbooked before, but
(heaven help me) I am actually thinking about putting something together
like this with pictures from this trip.
Thank God I got a budget day at work, because I was scheduled to work last
night, though I got home from my flight just in about time to change clothes
and go to work. As it was, I unpacked the loot and pretty much crashed.
Two other things I discovered this trip - bags you can pack your stuff in
and then hook up a vacuum cleaner to the bags and they suck all the air out.
It shrinks the bags down and you can get more stuff in your suitcases. I
would never have been able to get all of my purchases back here, even with
three suitcases, without them. My mom gave them to me. (Actually, I had to
have this cute "Tiffany" looking pumpkin and a cute turkey plate I bought at
Cracker Barrel shipped, as there was no way I could have transported them
myself. The other thing is a brand of clothing called "Life is Good" that
has really cute little pictures on their clothes. (Brian and I think we
need to make a parody of them called "Life Sucks". It could sell!)

Not much, although it seems like some of the lurkers have been coming out of
the woodwork lately. Buster called me and Melissa small-breasted trolls ~
haven't had that much excitement in years <yawn>. My 20month old is
sleeping through the night, and the 8 year old has discovered "hot chicks".
Hilary Duff's breaking out all over <yawn again>.
Cal's finally got a decent football team, I know that will excite you.
Welcome back.
rebecca
Well, it all sounds good. Hillary Duff has been big around here for a year
or so with SD which actually is OK with me - better than the Power Puff
girls. Football season looks to be an interesting ride this year - even the
Pac 10.
Hillary Duff? at 8? Man I'm hoping SS just sticks with legos until he's 20.
:)
Love,
Melissa

Tell me. I had this hideous flash of SS as a teenager, bringing girls home,
and me catching them, well, doing anything. I'm going to need some kind of
teenage stepchild manual soon, I need to get studying.

That is *always* a good idea. My ex found out all the stuff I did right
around the time of the divorce, when I had my surgery. He ended up
canceling all the kids stuff as he couldn't be bothered with the
transport, etc.

I'm much prefer the nail-biters, but only when my team wins! LOL.

ROFL. I totally mis-read that and thought you said you were the one IN
stripes and was so very disappointed when I didn't see Geri standing
there in Stripes. Very nice tribute, though.
<snip description of a lovely vacation>

LOL. It's a sign of Maturity, Geri, hate to tell ya!

Very nice.

Space Saver Bags. They work really well for short term. They advertise
them for long term storage as well, which don't work quite as well,
unfortunately. I used them once when I went to my favorite cabin in the
woods.

It probably could!
Cal~
LOL.
> My 20month old is sleeping through the night,
Wooo hoo.. that can be extremely exciting to the parent having to get up
every night. I am thankful my two never went that long, and sympathize
with you over the lack of sleep.

<giggle> Well, it could be worse, he would be drooling over Britney.
Ugh.

Hey! That football team has won two out of the last three Superbowls,
they aren’t just now “finally” a decent team! Though I have to tell ya,
preseason killed me. What was that all about, anyway?

AH...
Cal as in CA... as in California.. sorry! Never mind!
Cal~
yup, I did. 'Tho I can see how Calinda thought I was talking about her...
(-:
rebecca
Well, if I weren't such a major football fan, I probably wouldn't have.
I'd love to get tickets, but they price is too damn steep for me. I'll
have to settle for watching on the little screen.

I've seen those vacuum packer things. I guess you liked it, huh? I was
wondering how wrinkled they left your clothes when you got them home?
I'm also toying with the idea of getting a robot vacuum - Roomba - I
keep seeing the ads and they look pretty neat. Has anybody tried one?

LOL I'd buy one!
Sorry - not much else to say at the moment - just wanted to say hi.
Debbie
Actually, they were not bad at all. I was surprised. I am going to use
some of them for storage and see how they do, especially for things like
blankets, since my storage space is so small here.

My brother (single 30+ dude) has one. He loves it.

Well, maybe we are on to something then!
Shinypenny has one in her household. She's a lurker here, so I don't know
if she'll see your post or not. If she doesn't answer soon, I'll see about
pointing her in this direction if you'd like.
Cal~
Is that what the joke was?
jane
Welcome back. I quit smoking. Lee is back in town.
jane
Cool to both!

I didn't know that. That's great news, Jane.
