SO and I saw "In America" yesterday, and I don't think there was a dry
eye in the theater. Today we took my Mom to see "Calendar Girls" and
it was very sweet. Good for my Mom, too, since she has long time
friends who live in that part of England. They sent her a copy of the
calendar when it first came out, and she's been to the towns where the
story took place many times.

I want to see Calendar Girls. We're having a musicals week here. Saw the
Sound of Music yesterday, Annie the other day.
Nikki
I had that calendar in my kitchen. I remember my ex going through it when he
came to visit Lee. He was so surprised.
I'm trying to catch up with the list, but I keep giving up because of the
recurrent trollish posts. If we're going to have a war, I think it should be a
about something relevant and worthwhile.
So, what do you guys think of The Simple Life? Someone here turned me on to
it. I laughed until I cried. I've mentioned the show at parties - I have no
shame - and people seem to polarize into Disgraceful! and Hilarious!
I'm not sure where some of you guys would fall. I think Anne would wet her
pants and Kitten would turn off the tv, but you, Vicki, and most of all Geri, I
can't decide.

Troll traffic seems to have died down. It's a good thing, because I
can't tolerate NGs with a high volume of troll traffic, and I'd miss
this one.

I've never even turned it on, so I couldn't say. My one and only
guilty pleasure as far as reality TV goes is the Osbournes.

We love it!
Lynn
Just saw it today. Really enjoyed it!
Anybody seen The Shield? My SS gave it to SO and me for Xmas - season 1. We
started watching it 2 nights ago and are almost finished. It is great! We
stopped at Walmart after seeing Last Samurai today, and bought season 2 of
the Shield. Season 3 starts in March I think. I hardly ever watch tv - I
read every day. But this show has grabbed ahold of me.
Lynn
We saw Chicago. Renee Zellweger was fabulous! Did she win the oscar, or did
Catherine Zeta Jones?
Lynn
Catherine Zeta-Jones won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, Renée
Zellweger won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actres but the Oscar went
to Nicole Kidman for her performance in "The Hours".
Renée has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress this year for
"Cold Mountain" which was just released on Christmas Day. Her
performance is brilliant and, this time, she may take the Oscar.
Thanks for the news. It is amazing to me that C. Z-J got an Oscar for
Chicago
and that Renee didn't. (I know they competed for different Oscars.) Renee
was
absolutely outstanding and we thought C. Z-J was ok, but not nearly in the
same league as Renee. I hadn't seen her in anything before and she blew me
away. She gave the over-the-top performance that the role called for.
Guess we'll have to see Cold Mountain!
Lynn

I saw "As Good As It Gets" last night, and loved it. It was a little
draggy in spots, and a little stupid in spots, but Diane Keaton was
*fabulous* and really the chemistry between her and Jack Nicholson was
incredible. She really struck a blow for sexy women over 50, and even
her relationship with Keanu Reeves was totally believable. Keanu,
incidentally, was not his usual wooden, robotic self. There's this one
scene where he goes to kiss her and she's a little hesitant, and he
says, "Must we go through this every time?" and pulls her over that
was SO great. He must have gotten a TON of coaching from her and Jack.
Jack, I thought, kind of phoned in his performance, and some of the
worst scenes in the movie were the ones where he cries or shows other
emotion. But actually, the scenes where Diane Keaton had to cry hard
or laugh hard just didn't do it for me either. I think they all could
have been omitted with no damage to the movie. But the scene with her
and her daughter, where she tells her daughter that you can't protect
yourself from being hurt by love and shouldn't try... it was
beautiful.
I would see it again, and I plan to get it on video.

I think you mean "Something's Gotta Give." "As Good As It Gets" was
Jack and Helen Hunt, and was also marvelous.
I want to see SGG.
We did go see "Calendar Girls" this week. Even Paul and my
16-year-old stepdaughter liked it.

I do mean SGG, and I want to see Calendar Girls in the worst way. I
went to the movies alone last night because I took SD and her friend
and didn't want to see the same movie they saw, so I had a half hour
of alone time reading in the theater before my movie started, and then
the whole movie to enjoy by myself. It was heaven. I'm going to start
doing it more often.
Anne
TV show. I don't know if you'd like it, Geri. The *joke* is that the young
women are not rule followers. They're different from the other people in the
show: urban/rural, young/old, beautiful/average-looking, rich/poor,
stars/supporting cast.
You'd love the shoes.
jane
That is the best thing I've heard all year. Great idea, Anne.
jane
Is it on cable?
Here it's on Fox. I don't know if that's cable for you.
jane
I am hoping to go see it today!
Lynn
As Good As It Gets is one of my all time favorite comedies. (Along with
Arthur, Ten, and My Cousin Vinnie.)
I definitely plan on seeing Something's Gotta Give. Maybe next weekend. And
Keanu can be as stiff as he likes - I think he is gorgeous!
Lynn
I think we might get that. What day is it on?
Except that everyone involved -- from grocery clerks to the homeowners to Paris
herself -- has confirmed that the vast majority of it was scripted or set up.
It is billed as candid, but it isn't, which, IMO, makes it very unfunny.

Have you read the book?
I haven't seen Cold Mountain yet, but I'll echo the don't drink too much
pop advice for Return of the King (saw it for the third time yesterday).
Not yet, but it is now on my "to read" list. I am just finishing up my third
Sweet Potato Queen book (the "Big Ass Cookbook and Financial Planner).
All the time.

WOW
Speaking of shows on Fox, Tonight's episode of the Simpsons would totally crack
you up Geri. It's about the CF movement. You'll love the end especially.

Darn. We are watching the Sugar Bowl.
I'll let you know if I catch it in reruns.
