I've spent the entire day slaving over the sewing machine
working on Queen Amidala's costume for my little one. So far
it's turning out great. The hardest part, of course, is those
round thingamawhatsies around the bottom of the dress that
light up. I lucked out, though, and found flashlight keychains
at the local discount store for ony 59 cents, so that's her
light source (I had visions of making the kid walk around wired
up to a generator to power the lights!).
Lucked out on the fabric, too. The same discount store had
some wine-colored fabric for $1.99 a yard that's a dream to
work with. In fact, after sewing with it for a little while,
I went back and bought more to make a *real* dress for myself!
(OK, so it's only polyester, but it looks remarkably like it
could be some sort of silk/rayon, and it drapes *beautifully*.)
Elder Daughter is going as a Jedi Knight, which is fine with me ...
all she needs for that is a brown robe and a light saber.
So who else is being what for Halloween this year?

Jane, I've always pictured you looking like that chick from

Would you please all send me a photo of yourselves, so I can avoid all this

Wigs are great...and some of the Halloween ones are perfect.
Last year my hair was 1/2" long and I needed long pigtails. Low and behold,
they made a wig with pigtails!
This year the hair's much longer, but I'm still using a baby doll wig. It's
blonde with ringlets, but when you brush it out they actually look quite
nice.

My BD wants to be a tiger, and my BS wants to be a Tyrannosaurus Rex. If
anybody has any advice for a good *no-sew* dinosaur costume (other than the
one in this month's Baby Talk magazine), please let me know. I cannot sew,
but other than that, I'm pretty artsy. That means I can draw well and paint
faces!
My baby, since she can't speak for herself, is at our mercy. We have a
pumpkin top for her head and her sister's old Halloween sweatshirt with a
witch on it. I'll probably paint most of her face orange <g>.
I'll be a prosaic bunny, but a hoppy one =:)

If my DH ever lets me, I'll post a picture of my family. He's pretty freaked
out with the whole "posting to the entire world" concept. I'm working on him
still.
We have lots of little children in our neighborhood, so since we won't be
taking
SD trick or treating we are going to stay home and pass out candy. We are
planning to decorate up our porch really scary and have some fun with the
neighbor's kids.

Well, you already know what I look like lil! My four year old is going
out as Little Red Riding Hood. This is because I'm lazy, and I happen to
own a red velvet coat with a matching old-fashioned, brimmed bonnet in her
size!
As for me, I'm going to a Halloween party as the date of one of the 'hot
bipolar babes'. Our current plan is to go as 'Dream and Nightmare'. In
my case, this involves a white satin corset and panties, white fishnets,
white satin shoes, and a wedding veil. She'll be in full BDSM dom
leathers, right down to the boots. We'll leave it to the rest of the
guests to decide who is Dream and who is Nightmare...

Sigh...I *miss* these costumes!
I'm an exhibitionist at heart, to be sure, and my personal favorite was
always a Playboy bunny. I started it in twelfth grade--low-cut black
one-piece, fishnets, high heels and rhinestones, with the bunny ears and
tail, collar and bowtie and cuffs (did I happen to mention that my mother
has *never* had any control over me???). It was when I got my personal
favorite pick up line, actually. We were standing in the 7-Eleven parking
lot and Kermit the Frog drove up in a pick up truck, leaned out the window
and shouted, "Hey, bunny! Want to f*** a frog???" I swear, I've never had
a better one!
As I got older, the costume got a little fancier--deluxe ears, velvet body
suit, satin collar and cuffs. The final year I did it, my best friend had
just finished a course in make up artistry, so I went as a Playboy bunny
who'd just been in a horrible, disfiguring accident. Half of my face was
made up beautifully and the other half...well...it wasn't pretty, with scars
and blood everywhere. We stopped short at the hanging eyeball, though.
And now I'm a mom...sigh!

I think the Star Wars gene is the dominant one.
S.O. and I spent part of our very first in-person meeting
in Sears (long story. sigh.) We were walking through the
home electronics department and they were showing the
first Star Wars movie on their TVs. We stopped to watch
and I suddenly realized, he wasn't just reciting the
dialogue along *with* the actors, he was saying all their
lines a few seconds *before* they did. He still tells me
that's the point at which I should have turned and run away
while I still had the chance (grin).
(He *did* wait until we'd been dating for a year before he
told me he owns an actual Star Trek uniform.)

Sheesh. And I thought *I* was being creative the year I went
to a party with the Jolly Green Giant, so I dressed myself up
as a can of Niblets!
Definitely here. As I said, BD is adamant she wants to
be Queen Amidala but all she's seen are ads and such.
It's also catching. When SO and I started dating I had only seen the original
movie. SD couldn't believe this! She and he made me see the other two right
away. SS has the same obsession and he only saw his first Star Wars movie
recently. The three of them collect the toys which I don't mind because they
are so much fun.
I should also note that SO has caught my toy obsession as well. He and SS are
the best people to take when shopping for a collectible barbie! SD isn't quite
into this hobby yet though.
Love,
Melissa

Well, a couple of times I've recruited a guy to be a supporting actor
and went to Halloween parties as a prostitue (with him as my pimp.)
It might sound kind of strange (or, then again, it might not) but I was
always able to pull things out of my closet and put them together in a
way that made me convincing. For instance, one year it was a pair of
white high heel shoes, red tights, red and white striped shorts, with a
white bodysuit with a huge pair of lips on the front for the outfit and
some *outrageously* pouffed up hair and lots and lots of makeup.
For my 'pimp', he found a light colored suit, a bright patterned shirt
(unbuttoned quite a bit) a huge medallion somewhere, and a floppy
brimmed hat with a feather in it. Oh, and platform shoes. He kind of
had me worried though because we were in Turkey at the time and
I made sure I didn't ask *where* he had gotten those clothes.

<grin>...it was just a joke, because Jane said that she was going as Zena
and black hair was *not* in my mental image of her!
So I was officially resigning from mental image making and requested that
anybody who wanted me to picture them would have to send me a photograph!
Strangely enough, though I pictured Jane as a redhead (redder than
strawberry blonde, but lighter than red), I also realized that she most
likely was a blonde because Lee's hair picked up the green so well. My hair
was medium brown and it never picked up the brighter colours like green,
blue and purple unless I bleached it out first.

Jane, I've always pictured you as having very short, straight
black hair.
Weird, the way we all have our own images of what each other
looks like.
One time a newsgroup I was part of started a hugely long thread
where we all told which famous people we thought we resembled.
Well, I said Kathleen Turner (meaning the way she looks at the
beginning of "Romancing the Stone", when she's sitting at her
typewriter with her nose running and wearing sweats and a flannel
shirt.) That's pretty much how I see myself.
Unfortunately, one of the guys in the group was only familiar with
Kathleen Turner as she appears in "Body Heat". Sheesh. I had to do
a *lot* of backtracking to get *that* image of me out of his head!
So far, the only one here who's actually looked like I had her
pictured is Vicki. The rest of you aren't a bit like I'd expected.
I don't know if that means I have a bad imagination, or maybe
just a very *good* one, that just got *too* imaginative.
>So far, the only one here who's actually looked like I had her

Yup...Vicki pretty much matched my mental picture too.

My pictures on my web page, so not much room for deviation there.
Except that I've put on a little weight since then (that was taken about
5 or 6 years ago). I will have to find (or take) a decent and recent
picture of myself to post.
My camera broke a year and a half ago, so I have NO pictures of the

Interesting. I'm not really sure *how* I pictured you, but I wasn't
surprised by your picture. I think I'm always taken aback by the dark hair,
though. I guess I *never* really picture someone with dark hair...don't
know why, because it runs rampant in our family! But I'd certainly never
pictured Brooke with such dark curls!
I think you're a lot younger than I thought...or at least you *look* like

Brooke is such a pretty little thing! And she gives me the impression that
she has an old soul...which may be how she puts up with her stepsister

Have any of you ever read the book "Go Ask Alice"? That's how I've always
pictured Jane. Maybe it's her description of her teenage/young adult years,
but I've always kind of pictured her like "Alice".
I think that's where the Gillian Anderson (it *is* Anderson, isn't it?)
comes in. I was listening to a radio interview with her once (X-Files being
filmed here in Vancouver) and she was talking about when she was a teenager
and had a mohawk and listened to The Clash.
I kind of melded the two images together and have pictured Jane with
shoulder-length, light red hair every since. Not real tall, but slimmish
and dressed in a casually trendy way.

Brooke is beautiful, and she and I both have old souls. What a lovely
way of putting it. I've never heard that before, but yet I seem to know
just what you mean. Charlie has a light, happy young soul.
Anne
Uh, Jane, you forgot to mention how beautiful my children are,
but we'll consider it said. :D
Anne
>My husband says that about SD - that she has an old soul. I never know

I'm not entirely sure I could put it into words. It's just kind of a look
in the eyes, that tells you that that person has known a lot more than
they're letting on.
Have a look at Anne's pictures of Brooke. She's such a happy looking little
girl, and yet she has a very mature look in her eyes.
lil
Cindy
>For those who have given it any thought, I'm not sure if I want to know how

For the record, Cindy, I *don't* actually have a mental picture of you.
You're just sort of one of those people who I have more of a phsychological
profile on. Like Kevin. I *know* Kevin's a great guy and he's going to
make somebody *very* happy someday, but I haven't really got any clue how he
might look. And Anne. When it came right down to it, I didn't actually
have any mental picture of Anne. Which doesn't mean that she wasn't worth
the effort or anything, but some people just remind me of others.
Like Jane. And Merrie always sounds so much like a mom that I pictured her
looking like *my* mom did when I was a kid...and I wasn't too far off,
actually! And from Sian's name I foolishly assumed that she was Asian...a
beautiful, slender Asian woman with long black hair. She's beautiful and
slender, alright, but Asian she ain't!
But if it helps, from everything I've read I *do* get the feeling I'd like
you a lot!
lil
>Short, blonde, kind of a chin-length bob, curvy rather than thin, no
>glasses.
Actually, cut me in for a slice of that...I *do* picture you as being short.
But not actually even short, really...petite and fit; kind of a Rhea
Pearlman thing happening, but not *looking* so much like her.
I think I'd replace the blonde with brown hair, though...kind of an
auburn-chestnut colour.
lil
I just checked out your site. Adorable! Your family is lovely. I especially
like the picture of Charlie in his swing with all the padding. And Brooke
resembles my Katie a lot (lots of dark, curly hair and big eyes)...eventually
I'm going to figure out how to set up a web page and I'll show you guys some
pictures of me and my family.
I can't believe you all are so young; I had definite wrong assumptions there.
Lil, I thought you were a mother hen-type...here you're younger than I am! It
boggles the mind. And I checked out and loved your brother's site (I even sent
him an e-mail). Your brothers are cute :-)
Jennifer
>Lil, I thought you were a mother hen-type...here you're younger than I am!
It
>boggles the mind.
<grin>...Nope, I'm the biker-chick type!
I never, ever wanted children. In fact, I refused DH's first proposals of
marriage and it took me two weeks to accept the last one. I thought he
should have someone more maternal and nurturing for the child he had and the
others he wanted. I even made sure he understood that, although I was
marrying him with the intention of eventually having his children, it was
entirely possible that I would never be psychologically ready to have any.
Of course, then my biological clock exploded and blew that all to hell!
For anybody who's interested, I'm 28 (29 in exactly one month and one day)
and I'm a *very* young 28. I wear polyester "Ally McBeal" short-skirted
suits to work, which I buy in the teen sections. On my days off, I wear
shorty t-shirts and hip-hugging, bell-bottomed jeans with flowers
embroidered on the cuffs. I *love* platform shoes and I haven't seen my
natural hair colour since I was thirteen. I buy all the trendiest jewelry,
including dozens of little tiny barrettes for my hair, and buy doubles of
everything to send to my brother's girlfriend's daughter. I have a pierced
belly-button (as those of you who have been to my brother's site may have
read about!), eight piercings in my ears (five in the right and three in the
left--soon to be seven in the right and five in the left, as soon as my
belly button heals and I can stand going through it all again) and a small,
tasteful tattoo of a scripted "L" on the outside of my right thigh. And I'm
short! I'm 5' 4 1/2" tall and "curvy", as Vicki puts it.
*That* should clear up any misconceptions! :-)
That all being said, I'm super-protective of my stepson and will fight to
the death for his rights and well-being, so maybe I'm more mother-hen than I
let on!
> And I checked out and loved your brother's site (I even sent
>him an e-mail). Your brothers are cute :-)
And they're nice, too...they're what keeps me from hating men.
I once said to my baby brother that I wished I could find a guy like them.
He looked at me and said, "Are you crazy??? I mean, you're okay, but I
don't want to *date* you! I don't like spending as much time with you as I
do!"
That being said, now that Rod and I are living in the same house together,
he flat out refuses to go anywhere without me. I've gone to the 7-Eleven
with him wearing my pajamas, because he wouldn't quit bugging me to go with
him. Last week he tried to shove my shoes on my curled up toes because I
refused to leave the house--and when they wouldn't go all the way on, he
just started tying the laces!
Last Christmas I was standing at my window watching the snowstorm. I
laughed to myself because if I was at home, my baby brother would be making
me go for a walk in it but here I was in my warm pajamas. I said out loud,
"Because he's a goofball, that's why!" The next thing I knew, I was in my
bedroom changing into warm jeans and muttering about how much I hated the
little bastard!
Later he told me I was crazy...even *he* wouldn't have gone out in that!
And he's not really the sexist pig he makes himself out as. He's actually
*very* sweet. He just does it for a laugh. We'll be walking through the
mall together and he'll say, "Did you *look* at the breasts on her? Well,
look at her! Look...turn around! Man!" :-)

loooong wait until my oldest brother's in May.
>She's joked before about tongue piercing and today
>she asked me, honestly, why it was so bad.
Because you have to go for *months* without kissing anybody!!!
Ick...the girl in line before me, when I got my belly-button done, was
having her tongue pierced and I heard the "piercer" tell her that. I
couldn't *imagine* going for months without kissing...um...someone.
>So in deference to the majority,
>and seeking not to offend, it is not proper for her (especially as a young
girl)

I'd be surprised if they let her do it anyway. Here, you have to be 18 for
a body piercing. And when I had my tattoo done, although the girl ahead of
me was in her early twenties, they refused to do that tattoo she wanted,
saying that she was too young for a visible tattoo. Not illegal or
anything, but a moral judgement on their part.
>Though it's not something I
>would like to have done--I'm pretty sensitive to things and I can't imagine
how
>irritating it would be to have a tongue ring constantly bumping up against

Nope...if I didn't think my belly-button ring was so cool, I'd pull it out.
It's not worth the hassle. It takes six months to heal (supposedly that
will be the end of October, thought it's *still* acting up regularly) and it
hurts like crazy...particularly when your jeans rub against it. I couldn't
*imagine* doing that to my tongue.
Tattoos are *much* easier...although a lot more permanent. My tattoo barely
hurt while they were doing it (I equate it to being stung by a mostquito for
an hour...annoying as hell, but not really painful), didn't hurt a bit after
that, was a teeny bit itchy for a couple of days and then was fine.
I do like those tiny little nose studs that some of the girls wear.
Although again, not something I'm wanting to try just now. I'll wait for my
next mid-life crisis!

They are *very* cool and she'll probably love it, except for one thing.
Make sure she understands that the clumpy, lumpy henna has to stay on her
body for several hours so that it dyes her skin. That's the hardest part.
It dries and it's itchy and *very* uncomfortable.
I had my wrist done a couple of years ago. It turned out *wonderfully*, but
I'm very claustrophobic and part of that is hating anything around my
wrists. I also have a tendancy towards obsessive compulsiveness and part of
*that* is hating dirt on my skin (I can poke around under a car or something

I'm always telling my DH to look at women. He thinks I'm crazy, but he complies
:-)
Your birthday is right after mine...I'm October 28 and I think you're November
4--or is that November 5? I'll try to remember ;)
My SD and I were having all these great, deep conversations today about violent
rap lyrics, abortion, politics, etc.--all those incendiary topics, really fun to
discuss with a 13-year-old! She's joked before about tongue piercing and today
she asked me, honestly, why it was so bad.
I told her there was nothing bad per se about tongue piercing (presuming it's
done in a sanitary fashion), but that it offends a large portion of our
community's members (can you say "suburbia"?). So in deference to the majority,
and seeking not to offend, it is not proper for her (especially as a young girl)
to have her tongue pierced. She doesn't actually want it pierced, it was just a
discussion. We only just (January) let her get her ears pierced!
I know I can be conservative about things like that, but I think SD liked that I
didn't personally mind tongue piercing myself. Though it's not something I
would like to have done--I'm pretty sensitive to things and I can't imagine how
irritating it would be to have a tongue ring constantly bumping up against my
teeth!
Anyway, it's cool that SD is getting to the age where I can have these talks
with her. My parents never wanted to hear opinions from us when we were
younger, since we were "too young to know anything." If I've learned anything
from NGs, it's that just expressing yourself can make you feel good about life.
I'm trying to learn not to shut my SD out from all aspects of adult life, since
she's going to be an adult in just 5 short years. In most ways I raise my kids
just like I was raised, but I'm really trying to be different in this one
aspect, of helping my kids feel they get heard.
Jennifer, feeling herself *way* OT!

Inter-racial? Not here. You might think that because of our differences.
I'm a mutt, and he's part Irish. My mom's Finnish, dad's a little of
everything.
I'm 5'5" and used to weigh 115 until SS moved in, then I shot up to 140.
Brown hair (mom calls it mousy brown), blue eyes - and I do wear glasses.
Small boned so if I can lose the 20 pounds I gained (December's coming) I
look like I have an eating disorder. My mom swore up and down for years I
was anorexic, but then she's heavy set so anyone skinnier than her is sickly
thin.

One of my friends does body piercing professionally. She looks like a
catalogue of possible piercings. I asked her once what was the most
painful to have done. She replied without any hesitation 'the tongue'. I
asked why. Apparently, it is because the tongue, unlike many places one
pierces, is a muscle, and is therefore thicker, denser tissue with a lot
more nerve endings. It also swells like anything, filling almost your
entire mouth for three days to a week. It is more prone to flare ups and
irritation simply because of the things you put in your mouth, like food.
It can also be painful when you drink something very hot or very cold,
depending on how healed you are. It never callouses over the same way an
ear piercing or a navel piercing does, because it's muscle, and if you
remove the jewellery, it will close within 24 hours. There's my primer on
tongue piercing...
Sian
(who has been pleading with her SO for _years_ now to have one of his
nipples pierced, much to his chagrin...)
Eeeesh. Help me out, here, people, please? How *do* we explain
this totally unexplainable celebration?
I think the *origin* of Halloween was something far different from
how it's celebrated now. If you research it, you'll find references
to the fact that November 1 is All Saints' Day, and so Halloween
(the name is short for All Hallows Evening, or something like that) was
the day that ... um ... I think it's when spirits walked the earth.
All this is a really vague memory, because the fun part of the holiday
that children (and child-like adults) celebrate really doesn't have
anything to do with that any more -- now it's just a day for the kids
to have fun and dress up in costumes and go door to door in their
neighborhoods, and getting candy or a treat from every house they go to.
Some towns have switched their trick-or-treat celebrations to afternoon,
for safety, but for most little kids, the absolute coolest thing about
Halloween is that you get to go outside and wander around *at night*
when everything looks all creepy and spooky.
You can buy ready-made costumes at the store but a lot of us, as I think
you can tell from this thread, have fun making costumes for our kids.
A lot of adults enjoy Halloween so much that they'll have grown-up costume
parties at this time of year, too.
Around where I live, kids generally trick or treat until they're
about middle school age (13 or so). My 14-year-old is going out this
year, but she happens to be the oldest one in her group of friends,
a lot of whom are one or two years younger than she is. This year
my 9-year-old is going with her crowd of friends instead of with me,
but we live in a really child-safe neighborhood so I'm not worried.
(Much, anyway.)
I know there are a few fundamentalist Christian groups who object to
or don't participate in Halloween because of its association with
witches, spirits, etc., and I certainly don't mean to start any kind
of religious argument here, but in my personal opinion these people
are way overreacting. For kids, the holiday is just one big costume
parade, and a chance to break some of the rules about staying out late
and eating lots of candy.
Anyone else want to add anything? I think that's the basics, at least.

(wish me luck?)
:Well, I saw Vicki's picture around the time I was first getting to know
:all of you on the group, so I've always pictured her picture talking.
:
Well, now, that's just plain creepy.
It may be telling, however, that my sign language name sign combines
my first initial with the sign for "talk."
As I recall it, the people would wear masks and candles in gourds in the
windows and doorsteps to frighten away the evil spirits.
Our church/school does not celebrate Halloween per se - they have a Fall
Festival (though we do Halloween at home if we want). We don't consider
ourselves "fundamentalists" though. :-)
Actually, I think you explained it pretty well. The only addition I can
think of is that the giving of candy to kids comes from the attempt
to placate the 'evil spirits' that were roaming around by leaving food
for them. Now we just try to placate the pre-teens (who sometimes
can be confused with evil spirits <grin>.)
Hey - I never did hear when their baby was born, OR what name they settled

Does Tori have red hair? I'm almost entirely of irish ancestry. My dad
has carrot orange hair (well, grey now) - I'm blonde. Doug's got the
welsh/english/scottish thing going on, with some redheads in his family,
so I'm afraid we're going to have little curly-haired redheads - won't
they be cute?

If it is what I think it is, the practice derives from something that is
done in parts of India for a girl's wedding. It involves tracing an
intricate design on the skin with henna. Anyone who has ever hennaed
their own hair will know that the bloody stuff stains your skin a pale
orange with very little contact. When you leave it on for a sufficient
amount of time, it dyes the skin a deep cherry-wood like colour. Because
it is applied to the surface of the skin; it lasts as long as it takes for
the epidermis to replace itself. It can be very attractive and is mostly
risk free (I suppose one could be allergic to the henna, but that's about
it!)
As for where it's done, some tatoo places do them. Some alternative
beauty parlours do them. I think I've even seen some kiosks in malls that
do them... but I wouldn't know where to look in California, Jane...

You get kudos from me just from sitting down at a sewing machine. I even
think of sewing and I start to cry. And yes, I took a sewing class in
college and I made an A but it was the hardest A I ever earned and the one
with the most tears attached. *sigh* Anybody want a really good sewing
machine?
Louise
When I picked her up she didn't have her glasses on. BM said "I thought MIL
was going to pick her up". I said "Well, I had plans to pick her up before
MIL did, I wanted her to watch a movie with us." She looked at SD and said
"Here, make sure these clothes come back with you." We NEVER keep the
clothes, heck, she borrows clothes from us all the time. But I thought
about you guys and said to myself...don't let this get to you.
We got in the car and SD said "I was hoping you or MIL would come and get
me. I was so happy to see you. We drove by your office today and I said
there is Dana's work!! I am glad to get out of there." I asked if they were
gettting on her nerves and she said that her SD was griping that she was
keeping him awake.
We went to Wal-Mart and picked out a costume. It took 2 hours and she ended
up with a ballernia dress, a top hat, bowtie and gloves...don't ask!! We
left there and I went to order BD costume, but they were out of the
Teletubbies. Then we got a movie and something to eat. We had a great
night.
The next day, MIL brought her back. She hugged me and got these tears in
her eyes and said " I am so glad to see you. I was afraid I'd never see you
or daddy again." I wonder where this came from? We all went back to
Wal-Mart to get BD costume (which is a 50's Barbie) and we let them try them
on when we got home. SD decided she didn't want hers ... she thought the
bowtie was a hair bow! So, we asked her what she wanted to be and she said
she wanted to dress like BD. I told her that she had to pick a differnet
costume because BD picked that one. When she walked off, DH asked why can't
they dress alike? I told him that I picked that costume out for SD and she
said she didn't want it, she didn't like it. She didn't want it until BD
got it. Was I wrong?
Well, BM called and wanted SD to come home. We dropped her off and DH told
BM that SD hadn't ate yet and we were going to take back to Wal-Mart and let
her get a differnet costume. BM just said "ok and shut the door. DH was so
mad!
So, did I do the right thing?

To Louise and others who don't want to sew and need a really good
excuse, here is what I did. If your sewing machine is in a cabinet like
mine is, you offer it as a fish tank stand (because really now, not many
pieces of furniture can hold the weight of a full fish tank). Then
whenever anyone suggests you sew something, you say "Oh darn, my sewing
machine is holding the fish tank or I would gladly sew that".
It's worked for me for 5 years now and going. ;)

Don't feel alone, Louise. I don't know *how* to sew. I own a

I think there's about four feet of dust on it :)

I'm confused and I reread it twice. If the only reason she can't have
the costume she wanted was because BD had one or because she didn't want it
until BD was wearing it, then I think she should have been able to have it.
(I'm thinking this wouldn't be a problem for BD.) If it's a matter of
having already made the non-refundable purchase based on her input already -
then you have every right to draw the line.
