I'm on day two of Paxil (5mg) and both days it's caused mania in me
about 2-3 hours after I take it and it lasts for a few hours. I panic
and get scared because of it. This is with just 5mg (breaking a 10mg
pill in half). Is mania a temporary thing that goes away after my
body gets used to the meds? I tried Luvox a few months ago and it had
the same reaction. I've read that mania activation is not uncommon
with SSRIs, but it doesn't mention if it goes away.

Even after just two days on Paxil I like how it makes me feel (same
thing with the Luvox). I would hate to give it up because of mania.

thanks,

What does your *mania* consist of? You are starting Paxil at the right low
dose. But even then an SSRI can cause some heightened anxiety. I'd try it
for a few more days, see what happens. If it is SSDRI incduced mania it
should be temporary but *nothing* surprises me anymore with this disorder.

Tell me about it. This has to be about the most "your mileage may vary"
disorder around. Like my tale of Zoloft being perfectly good as an
antidepressant-only that worked on the first hit. I was able to use it
as-needed and cyclically go on and off it to get drunk!

I started Paxil, and it seems to have a calming effect but while not
manic, its antidepressant effect is ALSO same-day-service! I'll find out
if its anti-SP effect is same-day-service tomorrow. I started on 20mg.

I took my first 20mg hit of Paxil, and I feel a slight drowsy buzz. No
mania, but definitely less depression. Must have same-day-service effect
on me. :) Becuse you busted a pill in half it may have been time-release
and you merely defeated the purpose.

I'll find out tomorrow with my second hit of Paxil in the morning if it
and propranolol work on SP. I may luck out and have same-day-service
effect. You might have it too, but nobody can really know.

What I call "same-day-service" effect is when an SSRI or other slow to
start drug works upon the first hit. The desired effect (or at least
intended effect) is delivered... same day service. With an SSRI, this
effect is potentially useful for weekend-warrior drunks as you use it
during the week and drink on weekends, though it's not recommended.

Celexa (ssri) also gave me "manic" side effects...
i told my pdoc and he prescribed me a mood stabilizer -- "Lamictal" this evened
out my moods.
