Noise wakes me up.  Do you know of any earplugs other than the foam expands
after you squeeze it and insert it in your ear?  My fingers are very weak
and squishing the plug is almost impossible.  thanks

The only kind I can think of that don't require molding, are the type used by shooters or those running power equipment such as leaf blowers, etc.   They're not expensive and you can get them at just about any hardware or home improvement/lawn and garden center.

Here's a type that uses foam: http://www.3m.com/product/information/Foam-Ear-Plugs-Hearing-Protecti...

These are similar to the above but are not foam.  I use these outdoors with power equipment: http://bluewingsindia.com/images/ear-protection4b.jpg

And these are similar to the ones I use: http://www.allsafetyproducts.com/images/products/HLI-Clarity%20Earplu...

None of these require any 'molding' to stay in, the 'rings' compress automatically and keep them in.

I have never used any type of earplugs for sleeping, though.  So I can't tell you how these will perform for blocking noise while sleeping, or even if they will stay in all night for you.

There are wax earplugs but they seem to seal too completely for
comfortable overnight use. The accumulated sweat, etc that can't escape
the ear canal all night breeds germs and gets irritating.

Industrial areas use many different kinds.  You can find them in different
shapes and sizes.  Some come in a case with a small insertion tool.  I use
that kind.  Places selling air tools and power tools might be able to show
you a variety.  Even Home Depot.

I know nothing about these links or products.  I just found a handful of
pictures to get you going.  I Googled "reusable ear plug insertion tool"
Prices seem to vary a great deal.  Finding the right one for you could do
wonders for your comfort and peace, and also serve as safety equipment in
loud surroundings.

Jack, I think that the type of earplugs that you've been using
are probably the most practical. They don't protrude much, so you
can lie with  your head in different positions against the
pillow. There are marvelous silencing hollow "headphones" that
suppress around -27 dB, but wearing them while sleeping would be
agony.

There may be another implementation of the expanding type that's
easier for you to use. I have them from two different
manufacturers. One thing that dawned on me is that heat may be
part of the way that these work, so "kneading" them for a longer
period allows them to pick up a bit more temperature from your
fingers and allow easier (or more difficult!) insertion. It may
be worth playing with both of these aspects. The ones that I got
recently are cheap and from China at the dollar store. They're
larger and better formed than my American ones.

Note below: I'll probably be blocking Google sources on this board.

Richard
