My problem is the opposite of yours. (I think) I get too much deep
sleep,  and get many, many heavy nightmares.

So what made my situation worse, might make your better: Tryptophan.

Tryptophan is probably available in your country as an over-the-counter
supplement. I took the recommended dose of 1 capsule of 400mg (and 10mg
vitamin B6) per day.

  Some pointers on tryptophan:

Noteable quotes:

"tryptophan is an essential amino acid. This means that it cannot be
synthesized by the organism and therefore must be part of its diet."

"tryptophan functions as a biochemical precursor for the following
 compounds ...  Serotonin (a neurotransmitter) ...melatonin (a
 neurohormone)"

  I hope this helps.

At the time, I thought that the resulting increase in serotonin might
do me good. But whatever tryptophan did or did not do, it made my
nightmares worse, so I stopped using it.

I don't have anything relevant to your sleep problems, but have you
found these newsgroups yet?

alt.support.diabetes
(Caution - answering the doctor is likely to start making everyone
else start ignoring you.  Read several of the replies to him first
to help you decide if that's worthwhile.)

misc.health.diabetes

A vitamin that might help:

A collection of diabetes information:

Lack of sleep is likely to make diabetes worse.
