6 months ago i attempted to create a newsgroup whose purpose was to
address the needs of those who are, or are considering becoming single
parents by choice. i felt, that such was much needed given that the
existing single parents newsgroup is oriented toward divorcees and
really didn't reflect the standpoint of those who wanted to be single
parents by choice, as opposed to single parents by chance.
the attempt to create a newsgroup failed at the time. but it is
coming up on 6 months since the last vote so it is eligible for
resubmission through the request for discussion/call for votes
cycle.
i've given a lot of thought to my own situation, and after some rather
difficult consideration, i've decided that i'm not going to become a
single parent by choice. in my case, it had a lot to do with my
deciding that at my age (going on 43) the window for single parenting
is pretty much closed. at this point, i would be in my late 50's
with children entering their teen years. it just seems as though
that might be a bit too old for taking on that kind of responsiblity
alone. i don't fault those who choose to remain "child free", it's
just not for me...
notwithstanding, i'm glad that i went through the process - it forced
me to think about a lot of stuff, and it forced me (through many tears)
to learn about myself and what my needs really were to a much greater
degree than i had ever done before. consequently, i'm even more
convinced that this newsgroup *is* a good idea.
but given my situation, i'm not the one to lead the effort this time.
but i would like to encourage someone else to pick up the baton and
run with it. if someone will do so, i would be happy to support such
an effort. you can do a deja search and access previous discussion
from the last time. there was a suggestion that the newsgroup be
moderated, and while i am generally not big on moderated newsgroups
(as they have the potential for censoring open discussion) i tend to
agree that it would be a great asset for such a newsgroup to be
moderated to keep down the flames, trolls, and spammers. i think that
a team of moderators would be needed and i will say now that i am
willing to volunteer as a moderator.
i really hope someone takes up this task because while it failed last
time, but if we would only try again, maybe this time it won't fail.
