I caught this header over at parenting.solutions and thought it would be a
nice topic over here, especially considering that it is really easy
sometimes to focus on the negatives of single parenting.

I'll start with a little one...cause I can. :)

I was baby-sitting my niece this week (18 mo. old). Andrew gets very upset
whenever she cries, and he used to just leave the room and go somewhere else
to get away from the sound. But this time, when she was throwing a bit of a
tantrum, he knelt down beside her and starting cooing the "itsy bitsy
spider" (her favorite song). She calmed down, and started giggling by the
end of the song. Andrew just beamed and said that he was going to make a
great dad someday. :)

Enjoy your precious ones,

Nicol

Nice idea, Nicol, and great story about Andrew!

Josh signed up for the Navy Sea Cadet program...he's concerned about
getting into the ROTC, and thought this would help boost his
credentials. He really amazes me most days!

I overslept this morning and the kids woke me up as they were heading
out for the bus. I don't know which one did it, but when I got
downstairs, there was a full pot of coffee waiting for me. Is that sweet
or what?

I really like this topic. There is not bitching going on. When my son
was at his last piano lesson (he is 8 1/2 going on 3) he was learning a
new positioon. He kept putting his left hand on the wrong notes and the
teacher worked quite patiently with him to get it right. Once he finally
realized where the hands belong he took them off the keyboard, put them
in his lap, and then put them back on the keyboard in the correct place.
As he did this, he said very innocently "Nothing like a good guess!"

Yesterday I was feeling rather tired so my daughter (age 10.5) agreed to
make lunch for us (herself, me, and her brother) and then she made dinner
(with some help from me) as well. The best part was that she remembered
to put things away or in the dishwasher when she was done with them
instead of leaving everything out on the counters. And my son (8) has been
taking pride in emptying the dishwasher now that he can reach some of the
shelves where plates are kept.

In the Chinese supermarket, Nathaniel (22 mo) picked up one of
those long, thin eggplants, waved it around, and said "Purple
banana! Purple banana!"

Great idea!

I spent the weekend working on my son's room -- preparing to paint and
the first coat of paint. I also was dealing with a small plumbing leak.

Monday afternoon, I was up to my elbows in texture paint. My son asked
what he could do to help. I asked him to fix dinner. With a small amount
of help on my part, he fixed barbecue chicken, mashed potatoes, and
broccoli. He said it was "the best barbecued chicken I've ever had!".

:-))))

Too sweet, Robbin. Kind of makes you want to forget all of the "wrong" things
that they do, doesn't it? Bask in the glow of having raised thoughtful
children!

Maxine Scout was as cuddly and sweet for the last four days than she's
been in 4 months. It's like she finally recovered from the nightmare we
went through for 2 1/2 months this summer. I'd wake up every morning about
0600, with her climbing into the rack with dad. Smiling sweetly, she'd
kiss me on the nose, forehead, whatever was most available, and pass back
out for another hour or so.

Gad, am I blessed :-)

I've got a wonderful one!!!! My son just turned 1 yo last Friday. All his
young life, I would point at him and go "I Love You". Saturday, he pointed
back at me and said "I Yuv You". I cried, I was so happy. Now, we laugh
and play the tickle "I Yuv You" game. Noone could have told me motherhood
was soo great!

Not today, but on my ex's last birthday, I and my SO of the time
joined him and our children for a meal. My SO had a sore neck,
so I said jokingly to my youngest that she was good at back scratches
and back rubs, maybe she could help. Her retort "Tell him to get a
masseuse." <grin> I said to me ex and SO, it was amazing a 6 year old
knew what a masseuse was, and the SO replied 'just be thankful she
doesn't know what a masseuse isn't'.

Ooh, I have a good one.

My daughter is 11 yo. The other day we were talking about
college (I, too, was surprised that the subject comes up so
soon). I told her that there were a lot of good schools where
her dad lives and that she might want to think of them. She
said, "Mommy, I think I want to go to Harvard." My heart
swelled with joy that she had such confidence and high goals.
Then she said, "Then after that I want to go to beauty school so
that I can get my license to do hair and nails."

My son (11 yr.) wants to be a 5th grade teacher. I told him years ago that I
would probably not have the money for college, so he has to get there on his
own. His plans are to get straight A's all the way through school. So far,
he's keeping that goal. He's never brought home any paper or test that was
less than an A. Of course, the report card money I give him at the end of the
year helps.

Micah's current goal is to be a scientific research doctor that plays
professional hockey.

I suggested he might want to go into dental work instead. ; )

BTW he did something tonight that made me think of this thread. A
pretty nasty thunderstorm went overhead during dinner. I don't do
well in thunderstorms (it has to do with sleep deprivation and lighting
hitting the antenna of the house and blowing up the tv set while I was
watching) and throughout the entire dinner I was cringing.

Micah jumped up from the table, got Mr. Bear and brought him back. He
told me that since I was obviously scared, I could hug Mr. Bear and he
would keep me from being scared.

*sigh* At least he has the bedside manner part down.
