I think the problem isn't attracting posters. The problem is
keeping them. If nearly every email is Heather talking about her
daily life with little or no interaction with new posters then I
am afraid this place is doomed.

There are good people here. Learn to talk to one another.

Just my 2 cents...

OK. How do you do Glenn *offering hand to shake*
Perhaps we should introduce ourselves?
I'm a 33 year old married woman with 2 children, aged 2 and 5. I live on the
south coast of the UK.
I found my way here when Paula (Limerocks) mentioned fruitcake on the beanie
newsgroup. I haven't been here long, and I'm still finding my feet I guess.
I like reading Heathers pondering on life, I like reading anybody's
pondering on life actually. I ponder my own life sometimes, but I'm not so
good at actually getting it down on to the screen coherently. I'll learn :o)
I collect beanies, and I love to flirt.
Who's next?

Totally.

I think my last experience with a "home" newsgroup worked so well because the
other posters did just that...they interacted with each other.

Now that I look back on it, I don't think I did much relationship building in
the newsgroup at all.

I think I'll work to change that.

God dammit.

That's the second time today I've sent something to the ng that I intended to
go to e-mail only.

Even though you've heard tons and tons from me, I'll go next here...

I'm Heather and I'm 29 and I'm single and I'm an artist.

I live in Minneapolis, MN but am originally from the east coast and I want to
go back there.

I'm a lefty-liberal-pinko-commie-socialist in terms of political idealogy, but
I'm a materialistic capitalist in terms of the reality of my life.

I'm self-centered and childish but my life's goal is to grow up and out of
that.

I don't collect beanies, but I think they're damned cute and always want to buy
them when I see them.

I go on and on and on about my life in Usenet because I'm too chickenshit to
face the real world these days and because I love to write.

I'm 5'6" and of medium build, I've got brown hair and eyes and look much
younger than 29.

I'm a Leo, but I don't know anything about astrology except to know that I like
being the center of attention as you all can see.

I'm an alcoholic in recovery and through 12-step stuff I've found a
spirituality that's saved my life.

I'm about 13 when it comes to dating and am looking desperately for guidance
and support as I move my way towards 29.

I have a new kitten named Funky and a cat named Simon who have been playing
together all day today -- a joy to watch.

I'm considering very seriously picking up some freelance web design work
because offers for jobs keep falling into my lap but I'm scared as shit because
freelance web design might just be a dream-job come true.

Reality scares me.

I'm almost constantly horny as hell.

It's sunny outside where I am, so I'm going to go for a walk.

So, that's me...

Who's next?

Me, I guess. I'm 36, married with three kids (Rob-9, Alex-8, Caely-6), living
in Virginia. I'm originally from the Adirondack Mountains of New York, but
moved here because the job market is so much better here. I'm 5'11", about
190 lbs, blond/brown hair, grey eyes, and look a lot younger than 36. (Put it
this way- I got proofed a few months ago.) I have two cats and a dog, I write
for a hobby, and a friend of mine describes me as being fascinated by
everything. I'm currently an engineering student, specifically mechanical
engineering. I too am constantly horny and it shows in odd ways- for
instance, I'm an incurable flirt, which my wife finds amusing. I love music
of almost every sort, the exceptions being rap, heavy metal, disco, country,
easy listening and mainstream pop. I read a LOT. I have stacks of books
eveywhere. I play guitar when I'm of a mind, but get so much crap from my
wife and kids when I do that I rarely do it any more. I have an odd sense of
humor and tend to be a little edgy with it. I also spend a lot of time
contemplating life- I just usually don't have the time to post my thoughts.
If I think of anything else pertinent I'll post it later. Meanwhile: NEXT!

Oops, sorry about that last reply. I accidentally hit "enter" before getting
anything else down on here......

Anyhow....I agree with June. I love to read what someone else has to say about
life and to compare it with my own. I just have a hard time actually sitting
down and getting it all out coherently.

Oh yeah...maybe I should introduce myself:

I'm Adriana, more commonly known as Adri (pronounced Ah-dree not Ae-dree). I'm
a 17 year old, high school junior. I live in KY but I was born in Costa Rica
and I've also lived in the Dominican Republic. My life right now consists of
school, work, and the pressures and pleasures of being a teenager today.
I haven't been in this ng for too long. I was introduced by a friend and
really like it. I plan to be around for some time. I may not always be vocal,
but I'll be here.

For all those of you here with more life experience than me, be encouraged. I
love to read what you all have to say. I'm learning quite a bit about what
life holds for me in the future. ( Heather, I especially enjoy everything you
have to share).

Well, who's turn is it now??

I would love to flirt but nearly always end up getting
philosophical instead of physical... Too much thinking is bad for
the soul. What are beanies?

I am Glenn. Forty years young and living in Holland. I was born
in New Zealand to an English father and New Zealand mother. I had
an unusual childhood.

I managed to get over that and build a reasonably successful life
in television editing and special effects. It has made me a gypsy
in the travelling sense for the last twenty odd years.

I was a musician/singer for many years and have played gigs all
over New Zealand and Australia. I can't describe my musical
career as successful but certainly very interesting.

I have a Dutch wife, Judith and two sons Jesse (4) and Finn (2).

Beanies are cuddly little pellet-filled toys made by a company called Ty, in
the shape of animals. They have a large collector following, and are
therefore better described as a collectible now.
Flirting's good for you, it's recreational ;o)
Paul and I flirt a lot, don't we Paul? And I flirt with women too. That's
the good thing about the Internet, you're flirting with the person, not
their physical appearance. What somebody looks like makes no difference.
It's a bonus when you get someone's pic and they're attractive (like Paul
is), but it's not the main point. I just enjoy flirting <g>
Give it a go Glenn, you might surprise yourself!

I'm Amy, I'm 37 and I work as a file clerk with the county (name of county withheld for purposes of maintaining whatever mystique I retain).  I took 2 years of Spanish in high school and *then* joined the junior-volunteer "league" at the local Catholic hospital. . . if you're rolling the CSR cart down the 5th floor on Saturday morning singing "De Colores," you just might be called to do some interpretation.  (Ahem.)  Which teaches one, plain and simply, that 2 years of high-school Spanish is of extremely little help in a real-life situation.

(Ahem again. . . I watched a few seconds? minutes? of "Chespirito" on television once, long enough to ascertain that it was not a Spanish version of "Casper the Friendly Ghost."  That's what I get for thinking.)

I took the file-clerk job with an eye toward having enough energy left over to write the Great American Novel.  That didn't work out. :(

I am currently working on a half-baked idea and have succeeded only in figuring out why that particular story idea is returning at this time.  :P

By the way: no husband, no kids.  I was dropped on my head as a child.  Oh, well.

Hello, everyone!

For those who do not know...

I'm Paula, 37--soon to be 38 (April 30, Taurus).

I'm married with 2 daughters & live in southern California. I'm a SAHM & my
husband's a lawyer.

My interests include scrapbooking, poetry, collecting beanie babies (Hi,
June!), chatting about anything & everything, occasional flirting (Hi, June!
<g>), et al.

I found this group by pure chance & liked the name!

I used to know that song (although it is Mexican, which I am not). Little kids
in other spanish speaking countries get to learn it too. All I remember of it
now though is "De Colores, de colores.....(i forgot this part)....que me gustan
a mi".

I think I'm gonna stick to the Itsy Bitsy Spider.

Hi Glenn, how do ya do?

I'm Deb, 44, mother of a first grader and wife of a wonderful man for 15
years. I happen to respond to anyone who writes about their feelings.
Heather does that well, don't ya think?

We live in the beautiful state of Arkansas, and are in a beautiful burst of
springtime. I don't know if my allergies are rampant or if I have a nasty
cold, but I've felt like crap all weekend.

I'm Sagittarius, or half horses ass as my mother used to say. We tend to be
as subtle as a freight train, but can't help ourselves. I don't think we
have a filter between our brain and our mouth (or keyboard)...it just all
comes pouring out.

I am a compulsive overeater and adult child of an alcoholic and a
co-dependent. I was not wanted as a child, and told so. I was cruising
support groups and found this one. I find it tremendously refreshing to be
able to discuss ones feelings with a group as humorous as this one, to be
able to see things from a lighter side, to laugh for crying out loud.

I am an orphan now (I guess at 44 that's no big deal), with an older brother
who doesn't have much to do with me, and I look for friends in the
strangest places...like the internet. I have a lot of tangible friends, too.

I like to herb garden, paint, talk, and I'm very active in my church. I love
it. I was raised a Baptist but I got so sick of the denomination putdowns,
that I love being Presbyterian. Well, they just love everybody. I feel like
I was a Presbyterian all my life and never knew it. I sing alto in the
choir.

I have a Jack Russell Terrier named Jack. He is 12 years old and getting a
bit grumpy in his old age. He's spoiled rotten.

We like to tent camp in northern Arkansas, sit around the fire and talk to
old friends who have been campers a long time, too.

I'm unemployed and want to keep flexible hours or work part-time until my
daughter is out of school. But I need to figure out a way to make some real
money. Anyone interested in buying a painting?

Well, that's more than anyone ever wanted to know about me!

Deb

Ok..my turn I guess!
My name is Ann and I am very boring! I spend (or used to spend) my whole
day in acbb(a beanie news group) but I don't go there much anymore.
Paula posted about this place a while back but it wasn't on my newsgroup
list. Then one day...BAM! There it was! So here I am!
I am 26 (today actually) and I've been married for 7 years. I have 2
daughters ages 1 1/2 and 6. We had been wanting to home school our kids
and about 2 weeks ago we had an incident at school and I pulled my
daughter out. So now we officially home school! I am proud of that! I
see her doing better already! I work thursday through sunday nights at
an incredibly yummy steak house. I really like my job most of the time!
I took about a month and a half off recently because I was really
stressed out but now that I'm back I am doing my job alot better and
dealing with the problems alot better. It's just such a stressful place
sometimes! People are so rude and awful sometimes. It makes it really
hard. Anyway...we are in the middle of moving at the present time so
things are really hectic around here but should be back on track soon!
I'm pretty sick of this cold weather and hope it's warms up soon! I want
to get back to beanie baby hunting!! That's about my only hobby really.
I guess my dog is too. I got a rottweiler in the beginning of February
and I've been taking her to training classes and stuff. She's alot of
fun! There's a really cool story behind how I got her! I'll have to tell
you all sometime! Except for Paula, June and Dawn! (Hi girls!!!) They
already know because of the beanie board!
Well Like I said..I'm very dull so that's really all I can think of!

When I graduated from college I was painting large, geometrical abstracts in
acrylics on canvas, masonite or clear acrylic panels. I hadn't done anything
in a long time, and during a "breakthrough" in therapy I realized that I
wanted to paint again. I've done still lifes in oils, reproduced some of the
old master's works in oils, and sketched portraits in charcoal or conte
crayon. I would like to try to paint a portrait, and am considering the best
way to capture my daughter's delightful personality. I've also played around
with a mix of media, mixing pastel pencils and watercolor in an
abstract/realistic juxtaposition. I like to play with just about any kind of
art!

Thanks for asking...my ego loves it.

Well, I have to take up the back part of the kitchen and breakfast table
when I paint. I have a "studio" but it has been a junk room for so long,
Shelby calls it a closet. It has a hide-a-bed sofa in there and when my
brother came for a visit two years ago, Shelby said"You're gonna make Uncle
John sleep in the closet?". Pretty funny. (But you know, he hasn't been
back, either). Anyway, I plan to get that studio cleared out enough to keep
the paints out. It sure is hard to stay motivated when I have to put the
paints up and get them back out and put them up and get them back out, you
get the picture.

Anyway, I paint one picture at a time...and they're not large anymore. The
largest thing I've done is a 3' circle canvas. It was almost too large to
manage.

I want to do several of my daughter. Right now I have an idea of a Renoir
style, girl with watering can feeling, maybe in her Easter dress. I wish I
could do it the size of that painting, I saw it in the National Gallery of
Art, but it is almost lifesize. Wouldn't that be too cool! And I love the
idea of giving it to her. She is my biggest fan already.

Sooo...I wonder what would sell the best...abstract contemporaries or real
life or impressionistic portraits and still lifes? If any of you out there
were going to buy an original painting, what would it be like?

Deb

P.S. I dream of a large, airy, spacious country house to paint in with a
wrap around porch and high ceilings with huge windows. Sigh.

If I were to buy an original painting, it would be of some sort of beach scene
or sunflower still life, bursting with color (I love color). I like the
pointillism style too. I'm not too fond of portraits or abstract, although if
an abstract is "swirly" rather than geometric & has colors in it that please

Exactly my trouble.

I thought I'd be able to stand it, leaving it all out in the front hall. But
to get to the bathroom, the livingroom, the kitchen or the bedroom, I have to
go through that "hall" -- so it was too much to have it a big ol' mess all the
time.

When I get enough space I *will* have a "room of my own" for art. Even if it's
a basement or a garage.

Have I really never told you this before Dawn? Well, it's long and slightly
smutty, so that's a warning to anyone else who doesn't like that kind of
stuff not to read it LOL
I went to Paris for a long weekend with Scott, and a lesbian couple that I'm
good friends with. We found a Brit bar, and proceeded to get drunk on pints
of lager. Anyway, I somehow managed to get talking to these two French
blokes, and it turned out they had been working in the UK not far from where
I lived. In the end they decided to come on to Le Pigalle with us, which is
where we had intended to go. This is the Red Light area of Paris, where all
the strip joints and stuff are.
We went in the one that they recommended (why I'll never know!), and sat
down to watch the most lethargic stripper you'd ever have the misfortune to
see. Now I had this idea in my head that Paris would be a bit more exotic,
especially the strip joints. I wanted to get up and do the strip myself, but
Scott wouldn't let me ;o)
I went up to the Bar to speak to the manager (I was totally drunk by now)
and told him his strippers were awful - did he not have any better shows? He
said he did (remember, there's a language barrier between us) but it would
cost us more. OK, we decided we'd all pay for a better show, and I
negotiated a bottle of champagne to be thrown in with the deal free of
charge. Not easy, with him speaking French, and me speaking English - with a
German Hooker trying to translate for both of us *L*
All 6 of us trooped upstairs, down a long dark corridor...and into a
phonebox! Actually, it wasn't a phone box, but it WAS exactly the same size
as one. It was a booth, with glass showing through to another booth. Six of
us, each clutching a glass of champagne, in the phone box sized room.
Suddenly it dawned on me what I'd negotiated when the German Hooker appeared
in the other booth and took all her clothes off!! Oh shit!!! I'd told
everybody we were going upstairs to a better strip show...but instead we
were going to get a very up-close look at this German woman frigging
herself! And in broken English she muttered 'Who is married?' I said Scott
and me, I didn't really know what to say! 'OK then' she told us 'You two
make love whilst you watch me' 6 of us in a phone box, and she wants Scott
and me to somehow make love! We couldn't move our arms to drink our
champagne, let alone make love.
My lesbian friends were totally horrified by her for some reason, and
scuttled out of the phone booth. Scott and me just giggled like crazy. The
two French blokes were all for going round the other side and giving her
one, and she was up for it - but wanted more money. In the end she got so
fed up with us giggling she put her clothes back on and left the booth. As I
left the booth she caught up with me and offered me a free session with her,
as long as the others left...heheheh!! We all ended up leaving in fits of
laughter, actually it was more like we were thrown out. The Club bouncers
saw us to the door, as did the manager. He did have his photo taken with us
before we left though, he was laughing too. I imagine though that we didn't
do a lot for his other clients ;oD
I still can't believe what I ended up getting for our money, talk about a
lack of communication LOL

okay, the are a three piece called 'the groovers with hoovers'
(well it was either that or 'the rock'n'roll kids), it was the worst
name the band could think of at the time. the band itself have been
going for around ten years. i've been in for the last four.the old
drummer left to join a band called tabitha zu and is now in band
called ligament, check em out they're ace and playing gigs around the
uk at the moment. we don't take it seriously and we don't play many
gigs. the next gig we have is a the blacks head pub, wirksworth,
derbyshire, on the 8th april.

we just play really fast hardcore punk.

i'm setting up a website soon so standby for sweaty pics....

The worst? At least you didn't come up with something like Cherry
Poppin' Daddies. Good music, BTW, but I keep the CD out of my children's
line of sight. ("Dad, what does Shake Your Lovemaker mean?")

Bradford was the place that scared me the most. I feel dreadful saying it,
but it was awful :o/ Living in an affluent tourist area I'm shielded from
poverty to a certain degree. As this is a tourist town it's kept very clean
too, sparkling compared to the Industrial towns in the North. It was such a
culture shock to me.
What's worse is my Grandad was born in Yorkshire, and my Mum lived in
Bradford for years when she was a kid. She expected me to come back singing
its praises, but I couldn't. She's planning a trip there within the next few
years, all I can hope is that she's not too disappointed. I'll try and steer
her in the direction of the Moors for accommodation I think <g>

In art the soul should always rule . Deep inside of all of us is a small
still voice that speaks loud , if you are willing to listen .Never settle
for what pleases the eye . Please let me explain something as a artist ; if
you paint what u see it is realism -if it on its own it represents nothing
,it is non representational - anything in the middle is abstract. the closer
you come to N.R.the closer you came to painting the sound of music instead
of the bloody damn panio.Listen close, and you will see!!!

*L* I *like* that name! This reminds me, though, of an interview I heard
once with Barenaked Ladies. They said that they also chose their name
because it was the stupidest thing they could think of! Some friends and I

John,

Isn't it amazing how you notice things about music after you have kids that
you never noticed before? I never even realized a lot of the music I've
listened to since I was a teenager *had* bad language or sexual innuendo in
it until I listened to it with my daughters sitting next to me!

My 13 year old son calls us the Islamic Fundamentalists (smiling, usually)
when we don't let him go to R-rated movies and generally treat him like
the young cub that he is. I guess we draw the line in the sand a little
short of where other parents do. I was shocked that for a birthday party
he attended that the dad took the kids to see the movie Blade. So I don't
fool myself that he doesn't pick up "that stuff" but I can still make a
stand. Having a 10 year old and a 6 year old in the family factors in.

Same friend of his brought a copy of Something About Mary to a sleepover
at our house, and we put the kibosh on that too. "When are you going to
treat me like an adult" quoth our 13 year old. And so it goes.

I was saying to a friend today that I'm about 13 right now because my parents
never treated me like a 13 year old.

If you ever doubt your "strictness" just know that I sure as hell wish I'd had
some sheltering and some rules.

I mean, I'm glad about where I am now, but, SHIT it woulda been cool to learn
how to grow up way back then!

This reminds me (not music but I'll tell it anyway) of what a co-worker
many years ago told me her kindergartner got in trouble for calling a
classmate: babyf*cker. Turns out the child had put together the two
worst insults he knew of, to be called a baby if you're a kid or to be
called a f*cker if you're a grown up. I don't think he quite realized
it's not a linear world, and that 2+2 added up to considerably more than
4 on that one. 8v)

It's a little sad that a kiddiegartner even knew the adult insult, but
it's not a perfect world.

Hm, why is that even an insult, come to think of it? (Assuming you leave
my mother out of it. 8v) )
