Pecci, wife of Design Factory President Louis Pecci, aims to raise $1,500
for the Northeast Florida Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society via a
cut-a-thon Oct. 7, offering $10 haircuts.
The agency will split proceeds between research and treatment funds for
patients who don't have insurance.
"My medication runs $1,300 a month," Pecci said. "I'm really lucky that I
have insurance, but there's a lot of people that don't have insurance."
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central
nervous system. Symptoms can include numbness in the limbs, paralysis, loss
of eyesight, depression and fatigue. Doctors diagnosed Pecci in March after
she lost vision in her left eye for eight weeks. She since has regained full
sight, but lost hearing in her right ear permanently.
"It's a lifestyle change," Pecci said, citing daily injections, medications
and diet changes.
One in 1,200 Floridians have multiple sclerosis, said Sabrah Marvin,
community outreach manager for the Northeast Florida Chapter of the Multiple
Sclerosis Society. "On the First Coast alone, there are about 1,200 people."
Pecci already has raised more than $500, including a $250 donation from
Hertz Rent A Car and promotional products from Paul Mitchell Systems.
