She's (IMO!) a pretty tortoiseshell; has gorgeous copper colored eyes, front
polydactyl paws, & soft fur. And she has been settling in much more quickly
than I thought she would. Purred for me on Sunday, & by last night wanted
out of this back bedroom where I had set up shop for her with food, water,
litter, etc. She's still rather timid - very cautious about exploring the
rest of the house, but has become quite friendly already. :-) And has even
played w/a cat toy a couple of times. Went to the vet today - apparently
healthy, other than the excess weight. We're hoping getting more exercise,
walking up & down the stairs, etc. will slowly take care of some of those
extra pounds. (Cats can't lose weight rapidly - their livers can't handles
fast weight loss; can be fatal if that happens.)
She entered the shelter with the name Kenya - not sure if it'll stay or not.
Thought that, being 10, would need to keep her name, but she doesn't seem to
answer to it, so... we'll see. So far, she & Herrie have been fine -
they've sniffed noses several times, sniffed rears a few times, & no hisses
or growls yet; fingers crossed.
I posted a pic of her on alt.binaries.pictures.animals if anyone wants to
see her...
Cathy
Wow, she's really pretty - great eyes, too! How many toes does she have?
I hope that she and Herrie become fast friends.

What's wrong with a name that starts with Ke and ends in a? ;-)

Too bad I don't have access to binary groups. I'd love to see.

No access to that group through Motzarella or Google Groups. :-( Could
you send it privately?
Karen R.
It's really easy to post pictures on Picasa, and free. I like Picasa
because it gives you a fairly simple picture database you can use to
organize pictures on your computer, too, some primitive picture editing
capabilities (far easier than Photoshop), and an easy way to post selected
ones online. http://picasa.google.com/ . (I haven't tried Picasa 3 - it
has a lot more features than 2, but I'm going to try it out whenever I have
a free hour or so.)
Congrats on the new addition! She sounds adorable. I can't access binary
groups either :-(
Maybe you could call her Kennie, or Kiki, something similar to Kenya. All
cats seem to answer to kittykittykitty anyway!
Thanks for adopting an older cat, you'll have many happy years together.
It's not bad at all. I like how it automatically separates the
pictures from your camera into different dates (you know, when you've
maybe taken loads of photos on different days but waited before
connecting the camera to the pc) as they're uploading from the camera.
And the new screensaver option is very nice indeed.

She's lovely - maybe it's the way she's sitting in the photo, but she
doesn't look *that* overweight.
Thanks - in person, her eyes are even prettier. :-) I haven't actually
counted her toes. But I -think- she has 2 extras on each front paw & one
extra on each back paw. Then found out at the vet that there are extra
nails called "tweens" that are between the two parts of her front paws: not
attached to toes, but just sort of there... they have no muscle attached to
retract them. So have to make sure to keep them clipped, too.

That's my hope, too. At least she's not paranoid about him, as Demelza (&
to some degree, Debbie - my L-H black fluffy cat who died back in '01) was!
I'm just happy that they're coexisting so peacefully at this point!

Yes, this one loves jaw scritches & purrs away. I'm pleasantly surprised at
how well she's doing. Thought she might try to hide for days on end.
> How does Herrie like having her in the house?
So far, so good. Basically, Herrie likes everyone - people & other cats.
He might even like other dogs, rabbits, turtles... ;-)
Cathy

Thanks! :-)
Proved to be too much of a guilt trip not to adopt her!, esp. after I found
out *no* one else had ever asked to see her.
I actually did think of calling her Kennie - once knew a little girl named
Kennie. Not sure yet...
Cathy

Thanks. Believe me, it's the photo, because she is -very- overweight.
She's 14.5 lb., & should be more like 9 or 10. The vet says that if we
eventually get her down to about 11 lb., that's a fairly realistic goal. ;-)
Cathy
I shortcut the site to my desktop - may take a look later...
Cathy
Eva
Thanks! She was leaning against me earlier this evening, purring away, &
was actually -playing- with a cat toy in the DR. :-) Considering how she
was acting when I went to visit her, she's making huge strides.
I just took some more pics which show her true... ummm... form. ;-) Will
post a couple to alt.binaries.pictures.animals in a couple of minutes.

Check out the two newer ones I posted on alt.binaries.pictures.animals. <g>
Cathy
Trust me, compared to some cats I know, she's positively skinny! In
fact one of the fattest cats I know is a tortie who looks remarkably
like yours, but weights over 20lbs, can't even clean her own butt,
can't jump up on a chair, can hardly walk up a stair. She was even
fatter when my friend adopted her - she and the vet have worked hard
to get her _down_ to that weight!

I knew it was something without an "e" in the "er" ending. But that's about
as far as I got. ;-)

I love stories like this -- i've/we've adopted 2 cats aged
about 10, and they were/are a joy. I understand why
people go for the younger ones but they're missing
something delightful.
Our current senior citizen adoptee walked into our yard
and basically told us that he had decided we were to be
his new Assisted Living facility. Not that he's willing to
slow down much, always out chasing things and climbing
trees but he does want safety and regular nutrition and
becomes quite miffed over inclement weather. He was
ready to give up the wild life. And he gives back SO
much! 8~)

Nice write-up! Of course, who could resist him? - doing a roll, & then
rubbing against his didn't-quite-know-it-as-yet new person. ;-)

He sounds like quite a character. You really have to wonder how he came to
be wandering, because he clearly knows how to control humans!
He is! There's nobody on earth quite like him. 8~)
We think he was not only used to hoomans, but was
dearly beloved. He's incredibly, bossily affectionate
and the most dog-like cat i ever met. Takes daily walks
with DH as noted, comes when called, shows up for
tea time with us, at 2:30 every day.
There's a senior citizen mobile home community across
a very busy highway from us and we suspect that a lot of
the stray cats we see in our woods come from there,
either as runaways or abandons when someone dies.
He's a master hunter and we think he provided for himself
skilfully, but the diseases and fights were wearing on him.
There are days when he makes life worth living. 8~}
The hard part of adopting an Elder is that the time with
him/her is over too soon, but that makes it the more
wonderful to do it.
Well... I supposedly uploaded two pics of Kenya to the site, but I don't see
them...
Cathy
I just uploaded one of my kitten. I didn't see yours either.
I just checked - I still don't see the Kenya pics, nor do I see your kitten.
I checked p. 8 of the photos, but it wouldn't go beyond that; the >>
wouldn't work. I'm prob. doing something wrong, but I don't know what...
Cathy
I didn't any of the above, although I might have missed it.
A whole bunch of pictures that were uploaded earlier (as in a couple of
years ago) have gone walkabout. Including mine! And the site looks very
different since the last time I checked (a long time ago). Chak was the
administrator, but I don't know if it has one now.

That's what I get for staying out of touch. I'm so sorry to hear about
Demelza! I loved hearing about her, and her name always reminded of
that wonderful Poldark series eons ago.
Please accept my condolences. I know she was with you for a long time
and spent that time lapped in love.
Priscilla
This was the Humane Society.
Cathy
Thank you, Priscilla. Yep, I had Demelza for 15 1/2 years, since she was
about a year old when I adopted her. What a cutie she was!
I've considered re-naming Kenya "Verity" - also from Poldark, but so far
she's still Kenya. Actually, she looks more like a Clowance or Morwenna to
me, but I'm not quite as fond of those names; we'll see...
Remember from last winter when I was sharing a neighborhood stray B&W tux
cat with some neighbors? And I was thinking of naming him Francis/Frankie?
He eventually decided to move in with the neighbors; they were happy sharing
him w/me since they already had 2 (or 3?) inside cats, but he decided
otherwise. ;-) They go to the same vet practice as I do, so his records
were switched over to their acct.this summer. He does still goes outside
during the day, but now goes back home to sleep inside each night. So he's
all settled. :-)
Cathy
I'd prefer to adopt elsewhere because of the health screening issues at the
humane society but each time, I have found myself rescuing one from
there....

Yeah, but inadvertently - started out with just springing into my mind, then
Eva chimed in that Dion D's (thinking of "The Wanderer" song) middle name is

Damn! It's been too long. I'll have to see if they have it on Netflix.
I'm into Dexter now. Just finished the first disc of the first season.
Man is that a good show! And Michael C. Hall is a total hottie in a
VERY creepy way. *pant* Apparently in RL he and the woman who plays
his sistr are an item. (Credit the rags in my hairdresser's office.)

IIRC, that was around the time my Francis was getting his name, too.
(Four years ago?)
Priscilla
Warning: you'll get addicted & will need to watch the entire series! ;-) I
lent my vet the books - which she loved, & I'd look through one before
lending it to her, start to read a few pp. just to remember what had
happened, & felt myself getting sucked in them each time, all over again...
Such excellent writng.

Nope, was just this past winter. But someone mentioned that you had a
Francis (which I'd temporarily forgotten about - although I can "see" him -
cute B&W guy, yes??) & remember you adopting him, & I think you entered the
thread at some point, too.
