Hi Larry, Don't you just get tired getting this advice from well-meaning
people who wan't to wish your lupus away. i go to a chiroprator who also
does acupuncture and re aligns my hip now and then. He is knowledgeable
and studies all the time and says no way can he do anything for lupus. Just
getting over a flare but it looks like smooth sailing soon
Best of luck Ruth
I think you're very right to be concerned. A chiropractor isn't qualified to
treat lupus, nor is there any grounds to believe that chiropractic treatments
could put lupus in remission. He's playing games with her life. I hope she
goes to see a real doctor and stops listening to this guy.

Echoing what others have said. Chiropractic medicine has is values.
But putting someone in remission is highly unlikely IMO. Still, if
she feels *better* doing this then you can't knock that aspect of it.
But it shouldn't be her only treatment plan. There is a popular
"Chiropractic Internist" in this area that many people swear by - he
"prescribes" dozens of very expensive OTC supplements for his
patients. I've heard his method of diagnosis and it doesn't ring true
for me. *but* the people that do see him regularly believe he is
helping them and therefore I wouldn't say don't see him. I would say,
don't rely totally on this guy for complete treatment though. Maybe
I'm wrong - maybe there's a lot we just don't know about how the mind
works and how the body works in controlling immune system function.

However, I personally wouldn't advocate going to one who makes such wild claims
about what chiropractic can accomplish. There are others who are more
realistic about what it can and can't do.
Before I ever saw one myself, we researched them to fine one who didn't believe
chiropractic could cure everything, and who also did gentle manipulations.
Violent jerking and twisting can actually cause dissection of an artery. My
husband, a physician, says he's seen it happen before. In any case, I think
it's important to be seeing someone you can trust.

Take care

I became familiar with this type of claims while in college. One of my
professors was on a national chiropracty accredidation board. Most of the
main stream chiropractic schools limit their claims of relief, but "true
believers" believe that all illnesses are caused by spinal misalignment
(subluxation I believe is the word) hence they believe that proper alignment
can cure cancers, heart disease, a cold or flu, or whatever. By the way,
my professor's board did not accredidate such schools but they still exist.
You will find individual chiropractors vary just where they are on the scale
of what chiropracty can do for you. Find one with which you are
comfortable.
Best Wishes,
Marv

You're right to be suspicious of anyone who claims to be able to cure lupus,
especially through chiropractic treatments. Those kind of claims used to be
very common from chiropractors. They believed such things with an almost
religious zeal, accepting those ideas more on faith than on the basis of any
true scientific findings. It's one of the reasons chiropractors weren't well
respected by physicians. These days, as far as I know, most chiropractors
don't buy into such unfounded ideas. They can also be very helpful with things
like whiplash. I went to one myself for a whiplash injury and was extremely
pleased with the results. You might want to consider switching to one of the
more modern type yourself. Just be sure to okay everything through your
rheumatologist and/or PCP first, and don't quit taking lupus meds or add more
meds (even if "only" herbal) on the say-so of a chiropractor. It's important
because herbal remedies can interact with other medications and have
unexpected, sometimes dangerous effects.
