Can anyone tell me if it is sinful to post a picture to a NG? It seems
it would be helpful when trying to describe things.

Basically, you can't post an image to a text newsgroup. Many
ISPs won't accept such a post, and I think there are still
cancelbots that eliminate any such posts that do go through.

Images are normally posted only to newsgroups with "binary"
or "binaries" in the name. Right now my only newsgroup
access is through Google, so I can't find the names of any
binary NGs where you could post an image. If you have
a website you could post it there, and post a link on ASL.
Or you could e-mail it to anyone who wants a look.

It depends on:

a) the charter or whatever of the group - some forbid pics; but there is
no mechanism to enforce this.

b) your ISP, which may ban pics in certain groups and pull your plug if
you post them there.

c) other ISPs, which may decide that a certain group is text-only and
delete all pictures, or even all postings that contain pictures.

d) your readers, who may be using text-only programs.

It's probably better to stick the picture on a web site - preferably one
that does not require viewers to register - and post the URL.

others have given good answers, but let me add:

usenet evolved over time from educational servers, of course now it's
mostly private/commercial

but the point is, that text messages - even in volume - do not take much
bandwidth in and out of, or storage room on, the servers

now graphic [binary]files [pictures of any sort] are many times larger
in size both to transmit, and to store - so it is costly to have 'em and
most ips's will enforce a no binary rule, except in those groups
specifically chartered to accept 'em.

there are many google groups and also yahoo groups where this is
acceptable, but in general with health and support groups, usually not.

another point:

while a great many folk are on cable or dsl, that doesn't mean everyone
- in fact millions are still on dialup [remember that usenet is world
wide, not just the u.s.a.

dialup costs by total time used, and since binary files are so much
bigger, to post them in groups where it's not usually done means that
those on dialup will pay more even if they don't care to see the file -
it will be mixed in amongst all the other posts .

My server is text only.
Normal is to post a link, often to a site like flickr.

You could simply post it on your 'family site' George....
on a page of it's own separate from your beloved children and grandchildren
et al
.. and then post the link....
that would work for everyone!

Thanks to you all. I am now educated.

Don't be surprised if I try it anyhow. 8>)
