Dear "Sounds Familiar" I have recently been diagnosed with lupus and I have
only had one equivocal ANA - My double stranded DNA is Positive - My Rheumy
says that that is impossible!! Both should be positive - I would say that
the ANA test is NOT a sure fire way to test for Lupus!!

I am seeing a homeopathic Dr. now after the Rheumy told me he "thinks" I
will have a mild case and there is nothing he can do for me - just wait to
see what happens next!! I want to get my body healthy so I can fight this
thing!! I also have had the pleurisy for months at a time!! - that is what
led ME to ask for the ANA - which the Dr. said I didn't need!!

I am glad to have this news group to vent and discuss with others - We all
need to stick together for support!! My best to all of my fellow lupies!!

Well, I have a positive borderline ANA and still got the same reaction
(nothing they can do for mild lupus) from the rheumy. Darn doctors!

Hi Bev,
I just suggested to Cindi that perhaps her family doc would be willing to
treat with Plaquinil. My family doctor is far more approachable than my
rheumy. She just wants to dump more pred on me. He really listens to what I
am saying. The situation with the rheumy you saw is ludicrous. I find that
specialist often have fat egos.

Hi Cindi,
Do you have a good family doc who might be willing to put you on something
like Plaquinil? It could help keep things under control. It is so
frustrating when doctors don't hear what we are telling them.

Bad part is I 've got to find a new GP as mine has left the area and his
other doc, a female, just left the practice, too. I don't like the other
doctors in there so we've go to find a new doc. Guess that can wait another
6 months. (sigh)

SAY WHAT? Your rheumy needs to either do some updating of his/her
skills or you need to find another rheumy. That's just BS to be
blunt. It'd be nice if it was that cut and dried but it isn't.

>Both should be positive - I would say that

or anything else - it's just a way to sort of assess the amount of
disease activity. But even for that it's highly unreliable. I know
people who have had negative or very low titres while in severe pain.

I've known people with very high titres who were only "uncomfortable".

also, antibody titres vary quite a bit from one period of time to
another. If the ANA was tested in August and the DNA tested a few
weeks later (days?) then it's possible that in that time the titre has
changed. anyway - it's not impossible to have a neg. ANA and a pos.
dsDNA. Probably doesn't happen a *lot* but it does happen.

anyway - just putting in my typical 2 cents plus. :P

Kcat of the wobbly brain.

You and I are in the same boat!! I too have lost my GP, gone to
Scotland!! and he has left me in the care of an 'excellent young medical
professional' who I don't know from 'a hole in the wall'!!
I am leery of a change after 25 years and I wish you luck with your new
doc, whoever!!
