It survives as the Ghost of Christmas Past mainly because Usenet belongs
to everybody and nobody, hence there is (by design) no mechanism for
deleting it from the universe.
Maybe your blog will fill the need - fingers crossed!
Incidentally, on my computer running IE7, the text in the boxed sections
is displayed as almost-white-on-white and is impossible to read. I had
to go to Accessibility Options and tell it to ignore the colours
specified on the page - the whole page then displayed with black text on
white background, which is less pretty but more useful.
