NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 30 - Probucol prevents contrast-induced
acute kidney injury after coronary intervention, according to a report
in the February 15th American Journal of Cardiology.
Probucol in combination with other drugs has been shown in animal
studies to prevent contrast-induced oxidative stress and
nephrotoxicity and to prevent the progression of renal damage in
diabetic animals, the authors explain.
Dr. Guangping Li and colleagues from Second Hospital of Tianjin
Medical University, People's Republic of China, evaluated the role of
probucol for prophylaxis of contrast-induced acute kidney injury in
205 patients undergoing elective coronary angiography or intervention.
The incidence of contrast-induced acute kidney injury was lower in the
probucol group (7.84%) than in the placebo group (14.56%), the authors
report, but the difference did not reach statistical significance.
The mean peak of the serum creatinine and the increase of serum
creatinine from baseline after the procedure were significantly lower
in the probucol group than in the placebo group.
In the 3 days after the procedure, all serum creatinine values were
lower in the probucol group than in the placebo group, the researchers
note, though the differences were significant only on day 2.
"Probucol, a potent antioxidant, may limit the production of oxygen
free radicals and act as a direct superoxide anion scavenger and
thereby has the ability to prevent low-density lipoprotein oxidation,"
the investigators explain.
"Further studies are warranted to clarify the preventive effects of
probucol on contrast-induced acute kidney injury," the authors
conclude.
