I know I'm supposed to show up at the dialysis center unless I'm so sick
that I'm actually in the hospital... and so is everybody else.
Therefore, patients who have any of the usual common illnesses are
there, which means I have a better-than-average chance of catching a
cold, 'flu, other seasonal bug, etc. just because I'm at dialysis. Does
this seem to happen to anyone else too?

Applies to both patients and staff. Our renal nurses always seem to have the
sniffles (they rotate through other departments in this smallish regional
hospital.) Infection control is big time at the moment as a couple of very
nasty bugs are around, and particularly prevalent in a hospital environment.
The nurses get right up you if they see you not covering your mouth when
sneezing, and hand washing is required of everyone, all the time.
