Just wanted to tell any of you living here in Britain with me that
there has been new news come in that many expensive original medicines
are being made into generic versions starting from Jan 2010.
The Department of Health have been strongly pushed by the National
Society of Epilepsy (NSE) authorities to try and push a motion through
to say how epilepsy is different from other conditions, and so any
change in the ingredients of their meds is likely to be dangerous to
persons epilepsy any amounts of seizures they may have!!
All the best

Hi. I'm in Canada and last month had to change the Doctor who
treated me for last ~30 years (even before the szrs). Well actually
I *lost the original Doctor to his own Chronic Health Conditon (I
wasn't aware of) :-< ..
I'm still waiting to hear back about how or when they plan to move
my Medical History (the original Doctor would have had in his files),
to another Doctor or one of my choosing.
My newer Doctor said *he didn't think there was any difference
between the Tegretol CR (Controlled Release) generic and the Frisium
(Clobazam) generics, and the Originals, so wrote my replacement
prescriptions for both as the Generics. (We have Prescription
Insurance as most companies in Canada, so any saving one versus the
other is only 20% net cost to us, while it saves the Insurer a lot
more comparatively. I expect they'll be happy... )
I have been using the Generic Frisium for about a week with no
differences that I'm aware of except a little 'brain fog' that might
be from change in weather = Air Pressure (my C.P. szrs used to have a
Aura that was like that). I haven't finished the older Tegretol
Controlled Release yet, so haven't moved onto full Beta Test (me)
using Both Generics.... I expect I'll be on both for several weeks
by Christmas. !! I'll report any negative effects from this side
of the 'pond' .... /G.

Hello Gordon, I remember reading about your doctor's death which was
very sad, and what it did to his patients sounded worse!

This is a load of bollocks!! I was on the ordinary Tegretol for over a
year in my early 30's, and use to have 2-3 tonic-clonic's together
with a mixture of many other seizures every week!! As soon as my neuro
changed me to the Tegretol Retard, which moved much slower through
my blood and therefore lasted a much longer period throughout the
day too, my tonic-clonics dramatically cut down to 2-3 per month.
Good Luck
Hi. The Tegretol CR I *was using before the first Doctor passed
away, is *not the same as the older Tegretol. It's similar to what
some places call Tegretol XR (Extended Release), and in Canada is
called Tegretol CR (Controlled Release). Generic here is called
Carbamazepine CR and is the Generic of Tegretol CR I had used since
about 1993.
The Frisium Generic in now called Novo-Clobazam, which is the same
chemical make-up as the Patented Frisium (which had Clobazam following
the name on the Original prescription, I started using about 1996).
As I listed earlier, advantage for my Insurer and those who have to
pay the Full (100%) cost if they don't have a Prescription Plan, is a
savings of more than 50% now that both pills have recovered their
research costs, and allow other companies to make the generic formulas
on licence. (I paid $10 and $11. for 200 of each, versus olde cost to
me of $18 and $23. The Insurer paid 4x what *I did to make up the
difference in each pill type-- $40 + $44, versus $72 + $92.)
This newest Doctor also told me (last week) that *he only keeps
Patient Records -- EEGs, MRIs etc. going back 2 years, so the older
tests my First Doctor would have had (I thought) would be out of date
even if I could get them sent to a new Doctor.) G./
Hello, Gordon, it's nice to see that you're happy with your new plan,
but do you really think it will work for you, and control your
seizures to their fullest, or will it make things worse? One thinks that
the Tegretol CR you were using in Canada is the exactly the same as the
slow release Tegretol Retard I was prescribed here in the UK after
the older Tegretol didn't control my seizures at all!

The main reason for the subject of Generic medication turning up here in
the UK is that of saving the government money, which is also the
reason why you probably have to pay yours! You see, as we have a
"National Health" here in Britain, it is law that the govt has to pay
for a number of certain groups of people (eg, under 16's, OAP's,
pregnant women etc etc), and one of those groups happens to be any
disabled person with an ongoing condition... and people with epilepsy
must come under it.
I just hope your healthcare system gets sorted out soon by your new
president soon, or you're going to find yourself paying a bomb over the
years... 200 of each different tablet will only last you a month
after all, and you don't want to be paying that amount for the rest
of your life!
All the best
I *too hope that Obama can fix their healthcare system. If they
used 20% of what 'George Junior' spent to find those 'weapons of mass
destruction' in Oil Country he wanted, they'd have World-leading
medical care. Their National Debt will still be being paid off in
2100AD, unless Asia calls their loans home sooner.
But the sooner Mr. Obama can get Catastrophic Healthcare insurance
or even Basic Medical coverage in-place, they'll be ready this year
when the Rest of the 'Baby Boomers' turn 65 and need the healthcare
coverage. (People born **following World War 2, will **all turn 65
this year.)
Several of our (12) Provinces in Canada, by the way, provide Free
Prescription Coverage for anyone over 65. Ontario (where I live) just
doesn't happen to be one of those, so far...
With respect to Prescriptions in Canada *most Businesses have 'Drug
and extra coverage' that covers all or part of expenses not covered
in the Base Medical system. Those include for example 80% of
Medication Costs (covered) so I only pay 20% of any 'pills plus
pharmacist's charges' .
Special procedures (like chiropractors and some other specialized
treatments) are also covered by this separate insurance. (My wife
has seen both a Chriopractor and Occupational Therapist for help with
a Back Injury she had last year. *Those costs are all covered (100%)
by my extended coverage.)
Most companies have *also had (100%) Dental Insurance Plans since
early 1970s. Countries that *want to care for their voters *will. My
opinion anyway.
(We have a Prime Minister who will be gone (I hope) next time he
calls an election. Not because of above-- those are in-place, just
because he thinks he's the re-incarnation of "bush-2" and is running
government like he owns it. Our Parliament has been suspended during
the Olympics (now over) because 'Adolf-2' decided to not face a Non-
confidence motion while they were on, so he asked the Governor
General (representative of the Queen) to suspend Parliament for 60?
days.... That ends this week, so I expect the Parliament TV channel
to pick up where he left off -- a soon to be Ex-PM. )
